DESCRIPTION | Mary Clem recounts her early childhood in Yuma, Arizona beginning around 1917. Clem shares early memories of a WW1 soldier camp in Yuma, influenza outbreaks and the plank road from Arizona to California. Clem’s husband owned a mortuary in Bisbee and after her divorce she went on to serve for 18 years as a clerk in Arizona courts. Clem recalls family history going back as far as the Civil War. |

Full Text | 1 Perspectives of the Past Oral History Project: Mary Louise Stensrud-Clem This is Kate Reeve, on July 30th, 2011. I'm interviewing my grandmother, Mary Louise Stensrud-Clem she's 101 years old, she was born on February 12th 1910 and this is our first test. Okay, this is Mary Louise Stensrud-Clem and we're interviewing in Show low, Arizona on July 30th, 2011. And Grandma where were you born? Mary Clem: I was born in California, in a little town near San Francisco, in Marin County which is across the bay from San Francisco, called San Enselmo. And we were, my two brothers and I, we were all born in San Enselmo. Kate Reeve: And what brought your family to Arizona? MC: Well, my father uh, got work with the reser-reservation. Reclamation service and it took us to Yuma. KR: Your father got a job in Yuma? MC: Yeah, got a job in Yuma, working for the reclamation service. And we lived there, uh, until uh, I was there 'till I was nine and my family uh, lived uh, we m-moved from the reclamation |
