Learning Packet
What is a "Learning Packet"?
A POTPOURRI OF IDEAS
A GRAB-BAG OF FACTS.
NEW WAYS OF LOOKING AT HISTORY.
A GUIDE TO OUR SPECIAL PLACE.
AN INTRODUCTION TO THE TUCSON PUBLIC LIBRARY AND OTHER CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS
READY AND ABLE TO HELP US TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT OURSELVES.
Every agency of the Tucson Public Library has staff librarians especially
informed of the "Sonoran Heritage" Learning Library programs and resources.
The materials enclosed are for your independent and group study with the aid
of these individuals and leaders of the classes and workshops. They are
meant to stimUlate reading and research, thinking, writing, collecting, and
organizing projects and activities in neighborhoods, families, clubs, or
alone.
The materials were prepared with funds from the National Endowment for
the Humanities Cultural Institutions Program. A grant awarded in the fall of
1977 provides for the development of programs, print materials and videotapes
on the topics: SHELTER*, FOOD*, WORK*, CLOTHING*, PLAY, FAMILY, POWER, DESTINY
and GENIUS over a period of three years. The packets will be distributed free
of charge at the library agencies as soon as they are compiled, and will be
made part of the Tucson Public Library permanent collection.
The idea that one can educate oneself at the public library is an old one.
Andrew Carnegie did it. But the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities
for this kind of education is quite new. Only four other cities in
the United States have NEH Learning Library programs Boston, Chicago, New
Orleans and Houston. In Tucson, it has necessitated the pulling together of
materials and ideas from many institutions and individuals, as our Sonoran
heritage is of interest to many different peoples and disciplines of study.
