DOWN MEXICO WAY "The Devotion of Enriquez" by Bret Harte Century Illustrated Magazine November, 1895 "La Tinaja Bonita" by Owen Wister Harpers Magazine May, 1895 Mexicanos These short stories were selected as representative of Anglo characterizations of in early popular literature, not as accurate accounts of the Hispanic Southwest. They were chosen, as well, because they are by two of the most popular writers of their day, Bret Harte (The Luck of Roaring Camp and other short stories) and Owen Wister (The Virginian). Reprinted for "Writers of the Purple Sage: Origins of a National Myth," a project sponsored by the Tucson Public Library, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, Arizona Historical Society, 1984.
