Porter Jones Esqr
Dear Father
I have written you often lately for I feared you were not getting any of my letters-
I fear the mails here have stopped running in that part of Mo.
I see from late dispatches that Coffee is again among you with a large
force. also that there are a great many rebels in Mo and the citizens are having
much trouble
I hope you have not had to leave home nor had any trouble with them- I
wish you all may escape the terrible fate- of the many who are engaged in this
war
As I have stated to you in previous letters I am going to Mexico- to some
newly discovered mines which I think immensely rich. I have my outfit- a good
mule and horse- plenty of everything I shall need- and a company of fine men-
I have many special friends going- I leave some business here unsettled which I
would remain and settle if my health would permit but- as this climate is so
dangerous for one with such weak lungs I think it prudent to leave
I do not think of returning here-unless on business
The climate is good where I am going and I have no doubt I shall enjoy
good health there I wish bro Tom was here to go with me- but- would not
advise him to come till he hears from me-if the mines are as rich as I believe they
are I would like to have him with me.
If the mines prove worthless it is very uncertain where I go,
I may return to Cal and I may not Write me direct to Aurora Nevada Territory I
have my letters
sent from here by express- but there is now no U.S. mail running to where I shall
go- I shall manage to send you letters regularly.
My wishes- for the peace of the country, and prosperity of you- My love
to mother- brothers and sisters- receive the well wishes of yur son

P.S. Tell Mother to give herself no trouble about me- for I have plenty, and shall
be among friends- I wish you were situated in a country free from danger
I get no letters from home I have never had but two one from Tenn and
one from Misseniah- I do wish I may get one before I leave
I shall leave on or about the 4th of October- I shall write again before leaving-
