Spill & Overfill Prevention
for USTs
THINGS TO CONSIDER ABOUT SPILL AND
OVERFILL PREVENTION EQUIPMENT
SYSTEMS
All UST systems that are filled with more than 25 gal-lons
of a regulated substance at any time must have
spill and overfill prevention equipment systems.
SPILL PREVENTION
WHAT IS IT?
Spill of a regulated substance during a transfer from
the truck to the tank must be captured by a bucket
that fits around the fill pipe.
Spill prevention will prevent a release of a regulated
substance to the environment.
Spill prevention devices are called Spill Buckets or
Catchment Basins.
The spill buckets should be sized so that it can hold
more than the amount of product contained in the
delivery hose.
MAINTENANCE
Device should be kept free of product, water,
and/or debris.
Device should show no signs of damage.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION
Must show the spill bucket was installed by an
ADEQ-certified service provider for "Installation
and retrofit of an UST."
Talk to your ADEQ-certified service provider about
spill prevention equipment and maintenance options
that suit your UST system.
OVERFILL PREVENTION
Answering the following questions may help to deter-mine
the appropriate type of overfill protection
equipment for your UST system.
What type of overfill device do I currently have?
How will the overfill device affect the usable
volume of my tank?
At what level should my overfill device be set and
is it set at that level?
Do I have the required certified documentation?
WHAT IS IT?
A device that prevents overfilling of a UST system.
Device must be set at the appropriate activation
level.
An overfill prevention device is required on any
UST system that is filled with more than 25 gallons
of product at any one time.
OVERFILL DEVICES & ACTIVATION LEVELS
Automatic Shutoff Device - Automatically shuts off
flow of fuel at 95 % or less of tank capacity.
Ball Float Valve - Restricts vapor flow out of the
vent line at 90 % or less of tank capacity, or within
30 minutes before overfilling.
Overfill Alarm - Alarm activates when the fuel
reaches 90 % of less tank capacity, or is within one
minute of being overfilled.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION
For overfilled equipment installed before
December 31, 1996, ADEQ requires the installers
signature, company name and overfill device acti-vation
level.
For overfill device installed after December 31,
1996, provide documentation that the overfill
device installation and activation level were com-pleted
by an ADEQ-certified installation and retro-fit
service provider.
It is important to provide certified documentation stating
the appropriate activation level. If the activation level
was not previously certified by the installer, then an
ADEQ-certified individual performing installation and
retrofit or tank tightness testing can verify and certify the
activation level.
