*** A News Bulletin of the Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing *** Collins' cochlear implant draws attention from media, community ACDHH Executive Director Sherri Collins' cochlear implant made the front page of the Arizona Republic and hit the nightly Phoenix ABC channel 15 local news. Since the publicity, numerous people from the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities have contacted Sherri expressing their admiration and asking questions about the surgery. The implant was a big step for Collins, who is culturally Deaf. "I am still Deaf. There is no surgery that can erase a lifetime of being Deaf," Sherri said. "I will always be a part of the Deaf culture. If I take out the implant, I have no residual hearing in that ear." Deaf Festival brings crowds topping 1,500
The first-ever Arizona Deaf Festival was a rousing success last weekend, with more than 1,500 people flooding the Burton Barr branch of the Phoenix Public Library. The festival was a joint project between the Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing and the Phoenix Public Library Special Needs Center. Other sponsors included the Arizona Relay Service, Sorenson Communications and Sprint. The free event on Sept. 23 included Deaf-related exhibits, performances, seminars on hearing loss and children's activities. "The festival was very positive and everyone seemed to enjoy it," said ACDHH Executive Director Sherri Collins. "It was a wonderful turnout for a first-time event. We're very pleased and looking forward to next year." Golf tournament nets money for VCD More than $8,000 was raised for the Valley Center of the Deaf Sept. 30 at its annual VCD golf tournament. Special thanks to staffer Heidi Lervik for helping organize the event. Happy birthday to ACDHH: 30 years in 2007 On Aug. 27, 2007, the Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing will be
