Narrative: Summer heat persisted during most of October and record maximum temperatures occurred at Sky Harbor from the 17th thru the 23rd. The 100-degree reading on the 23rd was the latest occurrence ever. The heat probably contributed to the moderate ozone readings between the 12th and the 24th. The high temperatures combined with breezy periods due to a series of weak trough passages prevented any long-term air stagnation with PM and CO readings kept at rather low levels. The only significant pollution episode occurred during the last two days of the month. Extensive smoke caused by wildfires in California was transported mainly over the western half of Arizona by southwest to west winds aloft ahead of a strong upper trough. These winds also carried aloft a good deal of dust and the two combined to increase particulate levels which approached or reached unhealthy levels at times over the local forecast area, mainly on Thursday the 30th. The event was predicted as early as the preceding Monday and timely information was provided to the public via high pollution and smoke advisories. The coordination and subsequent response by all was meritorious. -Reith 8-hour ozone02040608010013579111315171921232527293101-31 October 2003AQI Index Carbon Monoxide02040608010013579111315171921232527293101-31 October 2003AQI IndexPM-1002040608010013579111315171921232527293101-31 October 2003AQI Index PM-2.502040608010013579111315171921232527293101-31 October 2003 AQI Index
