FOREWORD
THIS volume purposes to be a complete record to date of
th:e JYIk Li7?rary of A.riz.onian, which is _the pioneer
collection of literature dealing w1th the too little known,
but vastly important, state of .Ariz ona.
The boolrs and pamphlets here catalogued represent the
result of the thirty years' self-imposed task of a bibliophile,
Joseph Amasa Mun1r, M.D., who is still continuing the pursuit
with possibly greater ardor than ever beior: e.
In t11e year 1908 tl1e library was donated to the Southwest
l\'Iuseum to be maintained by the institution as a free. public
reference library.
Being the first undertaking in that field, and thus far unique
of its kind, the collection has pecome tbe basis for tbis bibliography
of Arizona.
This work was unde1·taken as a token of appreciation and
friendship for the genero11s enthusiast who has given his priceless
collectio,n to public use, and also as a slight tribute of admiration
for that wonderful part of· the S011thwest where ancient
· and modern cultures mingle with.in the frame of unparalleled
beauties of Nattll'e; a land that I have learned to know and t o
love through years of association and research.
For the convenience of students who use the hooks it has
been found best to provide a list of ' authors alphabetically
arranged, followed by a subject index.
This constitutes the third Edition of the o,riginal catalogue
issued by Dr. l\1unk in 1900 and 1908. The first contained a
f evv lrtmdred volun1es, the second about 1000; the present i n cludes
several thousand items, and is ac.companied by a subject •
• index.
Experience has demonstrated that the users of these volumes
seek information along special lines, the ref ore headings largely
conform to these requirements, ·departing somewhat from the
generally accepted public library arrangement. Certain subjects-
like the much d.isct1ssed one of the use of camels in Arizona-
have been placed unde1· separ·ate heads1 such as ''Camels;''
.
12 l!OREWORD
the contributions of Dr. Richard E. Kunze of Phoenix are to be
found under '' Kunziana. ''
In the origjnal plan of thls bibliography, it ,vas intended
to accompany each title with a short statement setting forth the
special relation of the book's contents to the subject of Arizona.
This has been regretfully omitted owing to the additional cost
of l)ublication and the unavoidable b1.1lk: it would add to the
vol11me.
In a number of cases the titles of books containing varied
info1·mation are indexed under several-sometimes as many as
five J1ea<ls-thus afording the specialist the. means of fin.ding at
once all the vario.11s doc11. ments dealing with his partieular line
of research.
An alphabetical Jist of authors, containing titles of books,
edition, size and year of publication, precedes the svbject headings;
under the latter all titles have been arranged accoi:ding
to the s,1bject matter the works cover. Under the hea, ding
''United States'' are placed Reports of Departments and Commissions
and Congressional Reports.
Territorial and S.tate reports and messages referring to that
state are to be found under ''Arizona.''
.
.
Books dealing with two or more subjects are inde:x:ed under
their several heads.
Irrigation, reclamation, water ways and certain features of
dry farming, agricultU1·e and forestry especially associated with
reclamation, are placed under the general titles of ''Irrigation''
and '' Reclamation of Land'' and also under their special heads.
1Iucl1 material on ethnology, anthropology and folk-lore is for
convenience also indexed under the. general title of ''Indians.''
The indicated size of volumes conforms to the library standard
measurement in centimeters.
I trust that this modest contribution to the history of Arizona
may prove of some use to studeμts, aid institutions in securing
volumes dealing with the great Southwest, and make better
known the State's 1.1nique natural b.eauties, its interesting past
and boundless fut1.1re.

PREFACE
TO THE
THIRD EDITION
I COM1\IIENCED collecting books for an Arizona library in
the Spring of 1884, and l1ave continued the work: t1ninterruptedly
ever since.
In 1900, I published the first edition of 1ny catalogue of
Arizoniana in pamphlet foTm and paper eover, which consisted
of 500 copies, without notes or con1ment. The collection at that
time numbered a.bout 1000 volumes, and the catalogue was
printed mainly for my own use and convenience. It ·wa.s presented
to a few libraries and given away free to anyone who
applied for a copy, or was interested in tl1e subject) so that th,e
first edition was soon exhausted.
As the work progressed and books multiplie.d, it became a
serious question ,bat to do with them. I bad no suitable μlace
to keep them and they were distributed about in my home and
ofice and in a storeroom. As they increased in numbers, importance
and value, I felt concerned for their safety1 and saw
the necessity of the library being housed in a fire-pToof building.
I knew tl1at ,vltile the books remained in my possession,
they c0uld not. be of much use to othe1·s; and I so11ght a place
to put them where they would be safe for the ft1ture under
prope,r supervision, and wher,e they ,vould be accessible to those
who might want to consult their pages. To keep them hidden
away in seclusion wot1ld do nobody any good, and, if kept thus
too long, the woTl{ of a life-time might be dissipated and lost
through uninter.ested heirs.
Naturally I felt inclined to give favorable consideration to
any claims ,vhich the Sta:te of Arizona might have in a library
that :reprsented Arizona exclusively. It being then only a
Territory, and too new yet to be highly develo.ped, and with no
facilities provided f@r taking _eare of .such a library, I feared
that i f it wer given to the State tmder t11.ose circ1mstances,
•

there might be danger from loss by fire or lack of interest, and
for tl1ese reasons no ofer, nor efort, v.ras .made to place it there.
About that time the Southwest Museum of Los Angeles was
making rapid growth and the object of considerable public
interest, which seemed to make it a suitable beneficiary for such
a gift. Having made this decision, I made a formal tender of
the library to the l\f useum free from all :restrictions, asking only
that it be safely housed and prop.erly installed to render eficient
service to the public. The ofer ,vas made and aooepted in 1908,
and the library was moved at once into temporary quarters in
the Hamburger Building and put in charge of its able curator,
Dr. Hector Alliot. Here it was· shelved and has been open to
the public for the past six years, during ,vhich time it has had
many visitors and given satisfactory service.
Just prior to this event, and in the same year, I prepared
and published a second edition of my Arizoniana1 issued in the
same number of copies and in like manner of contents and distribution
as the first edition except, that thirty- five copies were
bound i.ri cloth; and it contains a brief history of the origin,
growth and purpose of the library. By that time the number
of books l1ad increased to about 4000 volumes-at this date they
number ovei- 7000-and I am still adding e:very new book on
Arizona that I can find. I do not now have to seatch for ne.v
items as formerly, since my fad has become known to the book
trade and d·ealers in books notify me whenever a book in my
line of collecting falls into their l1ands. They are not only inte1'ested
in my work throl1gh their own love of books, but also
know that I am a cl1stomer for every such book that is not a
·
After I had promised my library to the Southwest Museum,
but befo.re it was delivere, a movement was started by some
of the enterprising citizens of Arizona. and promoted by l\fal1rice
Salzman, then editor of the Arizona l\1agazine, in an efort to
secure the library for Arizona. I received some visits and many
letters on the subject, but the call came too late to succeed, as
the books had already been definitely promised to the South.vest
l\f useum . With my long acquaintance and lo'Ve for Arizona, my
feelings were more than friendly to such a proposition; but it
eottld not be considered foi- the reasons already stated.
However, after the question of its disposal ,vas decided and
the library settled in its new home in the Museum, it became
,clearly evident that its mission would be better fulfilled in its
present site, than at any location in .Arizona. l\ilany of the 1·esi<
lents of .Arizona from all over the State ,>isit Los Angeles one
or more times every year, when, if they so desil'e, they can con-s
ult the library; and, in an emergency, the distance is not too
great to 1nak:e a special trip prohibitive. Again, Los Angeles
possesses attractions th.at bring· tourists from all parts of the
world, and is the Mecca of scholars, educators and scientists,
•
PREF'A.0.E 15
for whose benefit the library is especially intended. The large
number of p·eople who V"isit Los Angeles eontinually, makes it
a n ideal spot for a museum and an educational center·, which
guarantees the life and service of tbe library for all time.
The inadequacy of the first two catalogues published was
fully realized by the author, but they were not intended to be
-0omplete or perfeGt, and. wer.e issued only for temporary use.
Now, that the great bulk of Arizona literature has been assempled,
it seems to be a fitting time to issu.e a third, and possibly
last, edition of this collection of Arizona books. Dr. Hector
.Alliot, curator of the Southwest Museum, has voluntarily
accepted the task as a labor of love. The ·book contains all the
latest -improvements in catalogue 1naking, giving all details and
neessary information in condensed form under classified headings,
which makes it a complete reference volt1me of what the
library contains.
The. library was thought to be of suficient importance to
me.rit a book plate and it w.as so ordered by the Board of
Directors of the Southwest Museum. The Secretary and Founder
Emeritus, Dr. Charles F. Lummis, Curator Rector Alliot and
.artist, Hernando G. Villa, together designed and executed the
book plate, which is herein reproduced, and illustrates the beginning
of knowledge by primitive man in the Southwest. It
is strikingly cl1aracteristic and attractively pictures the subject
it presents.
To all my friends who have assisted m e in this work, but
specially to Dr. Hector .Aliot, who is custodian of the library,
I feel deeply grateful. No work that I have ever done has given
me more pleasure and satisfaction than this ; and for the future
good that it may do, I expect to continue the work as long as
I live.
