Board of Directors Meeting, March 4, 1954 4
practising up to now, and has not applied.
Dr. Steen--Why not being some applications from the Hospital in to the office here, so that when they fill out their Society applications they can fill the Hospital applications at the same time. I would suggest that if an application for County Hospital Service has not been submitted, the permanent memberships be held up for a month or until they are submitted.
Dr. Engle's motion, to the effect that in Dr. Weurschmidt's [ Wuerschmidt's ] case he be cleared for ballot, was seconded by Dr. Carreras.
Dr. Steen moved that the applications for permanent membership of those who have not applied for County Hospital Staff membership be held up one month or until they do apply.
Dr. Steen's motion seconded by Dr. Fraser.
Dr. Harry Thompson moved that all term memberships be required to have made an application for Pima County Hospital Staff membership prior to permanent membership.
Dr. Hayden--I do not think you are being strict enough with this individual. I think he ought to have served one full year before being eligible to permanent membership. (Reference is to Dr. von Dedenroth).
Dr. Costin--That depends on whether he has been requested to do so. How about that, Dr. Bean?
Dr. Bean--He was sent an application, and he has not refused to serve. The application blank was sent within the month.
A check of the record revealed that Dr. von Dedenroth had been proposed for, and accepted, permanent membership in January of 1954.
Dr. Steen--I withdraw my motion.
Dr. Engle seconded Dr. Harry Thompson's motion, which, upon being put to vote, was carried.
Dr. Steen moved that, in this particular case of individuals who have applied for advancement to permanent membership at the next meeting, in the event that any of them have not applied for staff positions at the County Hospital, that voting on their advancement to permanent membership be held up until they do so.
Motion seconded by Dr. Fraser.
Dr. Hileman--that won't help any in this situation, because this person has already applied for staff membership.
Dr. Steen withdrew his motion, and Dr. Fraser his second.
Dr. Rudolph to Dr. Bean--Do you have a list of the number of years that the various members have served at County Hospital?
Dr. Bean--No.
Dr. Rudolph--I think that would be most interesting as long as much stress is being put on this County service. A list could be posted with the number of years each member has served.
Dr. Manning--The trouble is that as years go along a man dwindles off, but is still kept on the list, while not actually being very active.
Dr. Bernstein--How long does a man stay on the Staff if he serves and never attends meetings.
Dr. Bean--I am not sure.
The President presented a pamphlet called "What's the Answer?" which is put out by Lederle, and covers what to do in emergencies. It is offered to medical societies, printed with their name, and has been printed by Lederle for the Maricopa County Medical Society, who suggested that they might do it for Pima County Society also. Dr. Bernstein said that he was anxious to get the feeling of the Board of Directors about this, and the pamphlet around for inspection.
