The President spoke about the Television program, Dr. Kent being absent because of a speaking engagement. There are five more programs to go on the original commitment of 26, and the Station is having nibbles from various sponsors, the latest being from Arizona Drug Wholesale Associates, who, if they sponsor, want a group of 13 programs. The question placed before the Directors was whether it is desired to continue the original commitment of 26 and finish it, or let the Station accept a sponsor for the program and commit ourselves for 13 this year instead of the balance of 5.
Dr. Manning said that the Television committee had talked this over, and had talked with Ben Slack about it, to the effect that if he wished to sell the program on a basis of 13 beginning with next Fall it would be preferable. Dr. Manning felt that Mr. Slack, Mr. Callison and the salesman involved agreed to this, and the remaining programs of this year's commitment would be finished. He added that, as a matter of interest, it is figured that over 3,000 viewers are being reached every time the program goes on the air.
Dr. Bernstein stated that he wanted to leave this to the Television Committee, and to thank them for a good job well done, a great deal of work.
The President stated that he had spoken with Mr. Myers at the El Conquistador Hotel about having the regular meetings there, and that they are anxious to have the Society. Dr. Bernstein felt, he said, that we might have a better attendance there, there would be better parking and it might be closer to the homes of the members. He said that it would be necessary to change the meeting night in April, because of a prior commitment for the second Tuesday, but that the Hotel will do everything possible to help and make it convenient for the Society.
The President stated that a Mr. L.O. Engelman, of Radio station K.E.V.T., had contacted the Society concerning a program on medical matters to the Spanish speaking people, and that this had been referred to the Public Relations committee, but that he would like to go into it again.
Discussion:
Dr. Harry Thompson--I have heard him several times and he is very good. He gives the type of programs I think we should be giving.
Dr. Manning--It will be the most difficult thing in the world to get them to follow what you write. A chiropractor comes on this program every week--says "don't have x-rays, they are worth anything", and "don't have blood counts, they are not good."
Dr. Thompson--I am serious about this--this man gives very excellent talks, very excellent advice, what to do for a cold, how often to change socks, stuff on general hygiene. I think it would be worthwhile to discuss it with him, and if we are being requested to discuss this with them we ought certainly to do so. We might get the chiropractor off the air.
Dr. Steen--They want a doctor and they have not been able to get one--they are only able to get a chiropractor.
Dr. Manning--I will do this, I will go down and talk to him, but will tell you in advance that I am prejudiced. I have a patient who works down there, and knows something of the policies, because when this came up I took occasion to talk with this person about it. They do not want us to give them any formal information--they do not want to have any monitoring.
Dr. Manning and Dr. Carreras were delegated by the President to investigate this matter with Mr. Engelman.
