DESCRIPTION |
Viola Jimulla was the energetic Chief of the Yavapai Indians from 1940 to 1966, known for helping her people to much greater prosperity. Working alongside Prescott business leaders, she was successful in expanding the reservation by 1300 acres in 1956, surrounding the city of Prescott on three sides. Besides being a talented leader, she was also a basketmaker and translator, forming a bridge between two cultures without sacrificing important tradition. Jimulla organized the first Prescott Yavapai Tribal Council as well as the first Indian Presbyterian Mission. After her death, she was succeeded as Chief by her daughters Grace and Lucy and her granddaughter Pat. |
