              Transportation in Arizona Lesson

Overview
This unit introduces students to the use and distinction between primary and secondary sources. Students will use primary and secondary source photos and print resources to learn about how innovations in transportation in Arizona helped the growth and economy of this region. Students will use their research to record information on their topic and do group presentations about a mode of transportation, and its impact on Arizona’s development. Each group will contribute to the construction of an Arizona transportation timeline.
Recommended Grade Level: Fourth Grade
Time Required: 3- 4 lesson periods, 45 – 60 in length

SS4- S1C7- PO2: Describe the advent of innovations in transportation ( e. g., steamboats, freighting, stagecoaches, railroads) that helped Arizona’s growth and economy.

Day 1
Materials/ Teacher Preparation
•
White board and dry erase markers, or chalk and chalkboard, or butcher paper and regular markers for creating a web/ mindmap
•
A copy for each student of the Transportation Assessment Rubric ( Appendix A) for their review ( once the students review the copy the teacher can collect the rubrics for his or her own assessment use, and post one copy in the classroom)
•
Pictures of each type of transportation being studied and vocabulary word cards to match each type
•
Vocabulary word cards for primary source, secondary source, people, objects, activities, and infer
•
Examples of primary and secondary sources ( four or five of each for each learning group)
•
Overhead projector, and a copy of the Photo Analysis Worksheet ( Appendix B)
•
Projector and laptop or some other set up for projecting a transportation related photo on the wall or a screen to analyze as a group.
•
Copies of the Photo Analysis Worksheet for students and pencils.

Learning Objectives
Students will:
1.
Review new unit vocabulary: transportation, steamboats, freighting, stagecoaches, railroads, cars, trucks, airplanes.
2.
Review vocabulary related to today’s lesson: primary sources, secondary sources, people, objects, activities, and infer.
3.
Learn about primary sources and secondary sources and group some examples of each into each category in their learning groups. Primary sources could be: photos, documents, letters, a video of a play, works of art, diaries, and artifacts; and secondary sources such as encyclopedias, biographies, articles about works of art, textbooks, and a review of a play or movie.
4.
Analyze one photo as a whole class.
5.
Analyze a second photo individually in their small groups with assistance and feedback from group members.
6.
Derive information from historical photographs that will help each group start their research on how innovations in transportation led to our state’s development.
Procedures
•
Introduce the History of Transportation in Arizona Unit by asking students to think about all of the types of transportation used by people in our state today for business, vacations, and just for basic getting from one place to another.
•
Have students add ideas to a freestyle mindmap or web on a board.
•
Guide a walkthrough the completed web, then a mental walk back through time to the early 1600s ( before the Spanish introduced horses to this region). What transportation existed then? Foot travel, primarily on foot trails that followed main rivers. How did we get from then to now ( our web full of transportation options)? This is what we will study over the next week or two.
•
Go over what will be covered in the unit, show students a copy of the Transportation Assessment Rubric ( Appendix A), and post a copy in the classroom.
•
Review new unit vocabulary: transportation, steamboats, freighting, stagecoaches, railroads, cars, trucks, and airplanes. Have visual images of each mode of transportation and word cards to match. Go over vocabulary and have students ( be sure to include ELLs) do the matching a couple of times.
•
Explain that before we get into studying specific modes of transportation we will be learning about primary and secondary sources. Go over the vocabulary: primary sources, secondary sources, people, objects, activities, and infer.
•
Use actual primary sources such as: photos, documents, letters, a video of a play, works of art, diaries, and artifacts; and secondary sources such as encyclopedias, biographies, articles about works of art, textbooks, and a review of a play or movie. Mix examples of primary sources and secondary sources on several tables. Have small groups of students sort out primary and secondary sources. Have each group explain why they sorted the items the way they did.
•
After classroom helpers clear items from tables, the whole class will assist teacher in analyzing an historical photo ( transportation related).

Using an overhead projector, students get experience using the Photo Analysis Worksheet ( Appendix B) from the U. S. National Archives to analyze a photo projected on another screen, wall, or board in the classroom. The teacher can demonstrate methods for covering ¾ of the photo to examine and study photos quadrant by quadrant.
•
Students will work individually in their learning groups to analyze a photo using the worksheet provided and using construction paper scraps to cover three quadrants of the photo. Students complete the worksheet questions, seeking assistance when needed from other students in their group.
Assessment:
Each student will individually complete one Photo Analysis Worksheet.
Day 2
Materials/ Teacher Preparation
•
Copies of the Arizona Transportation Research Organizer ( Appendix C) for all students, pencils
•
Provide access to relevant reference materials, collected subject specific articles, and previewed internet sites ( refer to resource lists- Appendix D). Include photos from the Arizona Memory Project site ( see Appendix E).
Learning Objectives
Students will:
1.
Work in their learning groups to research their mode of transportation utilizing photographs, articles, and relevant web sites and the Arizona Transportation Research Organizer ( Appendix C) to answer the following questions:
•
When was it introduced to this region? Do we still use it or is it outmoded?
•
What need did that new mode of transportation fulfill?
•
How did that type of transportation contribute to the growth of Arizona and the economy of the state?
•
What other interesting facts can you share about this mode of transportation from your research?
2.
Students will record their findings and work in pairs within their learning groups to answer the above questions ( one question per pair of students).
3.
Groups will go over their information and practice presenting their information to present the following day.
Procedures
•
Students will be assigned a mode of transportation for each learning group to research ( stagecoaches, freight wagons, railroads, cars, trucks, airplanes).
•
Students will divide the research questions within their groups, and utilize articles, encyclopedias, books, and websites to answer their questions ( see resource lists- Appendix D).
•
Students will record their research results on the worksheets provided ( Arizona Transportation Research Organizer - Appendix C). 3
•
Guide students in practicing presenting their research within their small group in preparation for presenting to the whole class.
Assessment
Each student will individually complete an Arizona Transportation Research Graphic Organizer.
Day 3
Materials/ Teacher Preparation
•
Butcher paper ( 8- 10 feet in length and cut in half length- wise) for a timeline. Prepare by providing a basic black marker blank timeline for key dates and information to be added later ( refer to Appendix F – Basic Timeline Dates to Consider)
•
Markers, colored pencils, Photos ( found on internet sites or magazines), students original drawings, scissors, tape/ glue sticks, to create the transportation timeline.
Learning Objectives
Students will:
1.
Present their research in learning groups to the whole class.
2.
Add information to an Arizona Transportation History Timeline which will run from the 1600s ( before Spaniards introduced horses) to the present day.
3.
Utilize photos and drawings to make the timeline a more visual learning piece.
Procedures
•
If some groups are still completing research work from Day 2 lesson, have groups that are finished work on adding their research to a History of Arizona Timeline.
•
The teacher may have students indicate dates of transportation innovations on the bottom of the timeline with pictures, drawings, and details added on the top of the timeline.
•
Have each group present to the whole class about their transportation mode/ innovation and work in chronological order as to how that mode of transportation was introduced historically.
•
Allow time that day and over the next few days for students to complete the timeline with information, photos, drawings and dates for each mode of transportation.
Assessment ( Day 3)
Individuals will demonstrate their knowledge of the history of transportation in Arizona within their group presentations and their contribution to the History of Transportation in Arizona timeline. AZ Transportation Assessment Rubric ( Appendix A) can be used or revised for use with this unit.
Extentions
•
Language Arts and Social Studies: Read the picture book The New Engine ( 2001) by Carlos Encinas ( Kiva Publishing, Walnut, CA, ISBN 1- 885772- 24- 6). Have students write about and discuss how an innovation in transportation

impacted the author’s family when he was a child and how it may have impacted their community and their state.
•
Social Studies: The class could take a field trip to one of the railroad or transportation museums in Arizona.
•
Writing and Literature/ Genre Study: Students can choose one of the transportation photos and use it as a writing prompt to write a short piece of historical fiction drawing upon the historical facts they have presented or learned from another group presentation on innovations in transportation in Arizona.

B& W Photograph of Freight Wagons. Freighting was the occupation of many men who needed to supplement their living as subsistence farmers. Freight was hauled from Holbrook, where the railroad went through, to the stores in the communities of Woodruff, Snowflake, Taylor, Show Low, Lakeside, Pinetop and on to the army post at Ft. Apache. Most of the freighters would have two wagons, hauling about 5,000 pounds of goods. 1540 - Francisco Vasquez de Coronado of Spain came searching for the Seven Cities of Cibola. Coronado never finds the cities said to be made of gold, but claims Arizona as part of New Spain. Coronado brings horses with him ( as did a few other Spanish explorers of this time period).
1692 - Father Kino founds Guevavi mission.
1700 - San Xavier del Bac mission ( White Dove of the Desert) is founded by Father Kino. Father Kino brings horses into what is now Arizona and California.
1776 - A Spanish presidio ( fort) is built at Tucson.
1800s – By the 1800s most transportation in Arizona is by wagons pulled by mules, oxen, or horses.
1848 - Most of Arizona becomes part of U. S. at end of Mexican War.
1852 – late 1800s – Steamboats are used extensively on the Colorado River
1857 – First stagecoach in Arizona.
1869 - Major John Wesley Powell becomes first American to explore the Grand Canyon by boat.
1870 - Population is 9,658
1871 – Charles Hayden starts a ferryboat business, ferrying people and goods across the Salt River.
1881 – Railroad crosses the state of Arizona.
1889 – Phoenix becomes capital of Arizona Territory.
1900 - Population grows to 122,931 residents.
1900 approx. - The first automobile in Arizona was arrives at the Southern Pacific depot in Tucson
1911 – Two aviators fly into Tucson on Nov. 1st and 2nd from opposite directions attempting transcontinental flights
1912 - Arizona becomes the 48th State on February 14.
1919 – The first municipally owned and operated airport in the United States was dedicated in Tucson, Arizona on November 20, 1919.
1925 -- U. S. begins to create a national highway system.
1926 -- Highway 66 became the route linking Chicago to Los Angeles, passing through northern Arizona.
1927 – Transcontinental and Western Air, or TWA, begins regular service into Tucson.
1940 – Arizona population is 499,261
1960 - Population has zoomed to 1,302,161.
1998 - Population grows to 4.7 million residents.
