I \AlaS in Tombs tone on the afternoon Oct. 26, '81 - I wa a
~ltness of a portion of the shooting affray wfulch took place here
betrvleen Doc Holliday and the Earp boys and the Clanton and McLoltlery
boys - I only know Ike Clanton - I kn~l the Earps and Holl iday -
113 va 1m ·m Holliday Since the shooting have no personal acquaintance
with him - I have since saw Doc Holliday and I knm he was one of the
arty
tatement:
On the afternoon of the shooting I iSS in the barber shop getting
shay d this wa~ before the shooting '- The barber told me that their
w-s likely to be trouble be~veen the Earps and the crn1boys he said
the Ea ps had just passed down the street with their guns - I passed
f rom their dot' , to my house on the corner of' Fremont Street a.nd 3
and I W 8. • n their when the shooting commenced - I heard tw shots
a.s quick as you could count 1,2 .. I jumped to the side ~lindow on
Third St . looking up Fl-'emont st. I s \,\1 several men in the act of
shooting - At that instant I saw a man reel and fall on the COl"ner
of Fremont and 3d ats . on the south side right directly on the corner
of the house - I do not knOl'f who that man was- I looked up t hes.t eet
again I saw three men standlng at an angle about 10 or 15 rt e.p rt
about the center of the street ra~ing Flys photograph galery a man with
a horse stood bet~een them between the men in the street and a vacant
lot below Flys a-aletX and the house below·· I then saw another man
standing leaning against a building joining the vacant lot - Their
appeared to be two men firing at the man standing beside t he horse
that manappea_ ed to be struck f'rom the motions that he rna e -
then he .fired one shot at the lower man at the nor·thwesterly man
t'lhich I afterwa rds understood was Holliday - That s hot appeared to
take effect _ieh t'las fired by the man "'{itn the horse for the other
man turned par 1ally around - I then looked at the man against the
house expecting every moment to see some of them £a11 and he -as in he
ae t 0 s l iding dow'n on the gro l d apparently wounde d . A t the t in tant
the horse v nished I do .lot know \lhere he went to - t his lower man
~as .fir ng app rent1y up the street he fired one or two shots - I then
, sa the man liiTho 81 i down the s ide of the house lying down i th his
head and shoulders l ying against the hou place hi pistol on hi
leg and .firoe t\,10 shot s - he trie to fire a 3d shot but he was
apparently to "Weak the shot went into the all' - at this i::> . e time their
t'l s a tall an wi th grey clothes ana bro d hat sta.ndi bout the
middl€ of' the street fired two ""hots , pp' ,rently in he dir> etton of
the yr: ~n who had been leaning inst the house - then their ppeared
to be one par>ty in the middle of' the street r ring down the street -
this man ho laid on ~he ground near the corner of the house never
i"i ed but 3 shots he appeared to be isabled - t hen t here 't' B few
more shots tired y parties on the north side of the s reet the
rtie on the north side of the treet has passed from my view and
I as not abl e t o see them my iew Wa.S obse • The nex:t thin , I ob ·erve
t'las two men standing beside the man hat slid down on the s outh side
o~ street ne r the corn r or t he building . A tall m n dressed in black
appear~d on the scene ith a riffle in his har~ nd at take that
pistol away from that man, mea inghe man who 'las tr 0 ad or he
'Iould kill him- a t thi tiw.e t e shooting l:vas all 0 er and I do not
think the whole of it oce pied over 10 or 15 seconds -
The tall man dres..,ed in black was not a partiCipant i 1 the ff'r y -
their seemed to be six parties {"iring - f.our in the middle o:t~ the
street and one on the Boutl! side of the street and the on, with t he
horse - atte!~ard I recognized the man ~ith the grey clothes ax to be
Doc Holliday - I thinl<: their was about 25 or 30 shots fired all togeth r -
I did not see any of' the parties have a s.hot gun - The fight o,ceured
about 130 or 140 :feet away from here I was . I t hink from the report
that the first two t1'ere pistol hots - ! think that their "as one
report from a sho'c - I saw the man who fell at the corner of the
s treet l ying there all the t ime of the fight - I di d not see him shoot
he seemed to me to be the rlrst man shot - their was not time enough
for a man to draw a ' plstol to fire a shot between the first two shot.s -
they must have been from two pistol. - the man ,.,ho flre-d the second
shet must have been prepared to fire when the Lst shot was fired -
these two shots I heard ~'fere fire before I went to the windO\'f- but 1 t
did not take me but a second to get there .
