BISBEE.
One of the greatest and most prosperous copper producing
camps in the world is located on the El Paso &
Southwestern railway in the southwestern part of Cochise
county. Its ores cover a vast area of territory. Its
possibilities are as yet unknown. Millions upon millions
of dollars are endeavoring to ascertain the extent of its
riches.
The city is located in a narrow canon, which broadens
and narrows in its tortuous lines, held in bound by
the Mule mountains, allowing little room for the growth
of the city, but a mile down the canon is one of the most
beautif~l natural townsites to be found anywhere, and
the rapid growth of population is taking the newcomers
to that section. An entirely new era has set in in the
bulicling line in Bisbee. Formerly nearly all of the build-

ings of the city were "makeshifts" only. They were onestoried,
wooden structures, except that of the Copper
Queen store, which was constructed of stone and brick
walls. Today there are many handsome store buildings,
two and three stories in height, with handsome store
fronts and plate glass windows, while more are in course
of construction.
The growth of Bisbee in a commercial way has kept
pace with the development of her mining industries.
Bisbee is but in her infancy. The pack train has given
way to the handsome equipment of the modern railway.
The patient burro has been succeeded by the iron horse.
The mighty hoists have supplanted the former windlass.
Majestic machinery pushed aside the work of manual
labor. The stately brick store and office building now
stands where stood the frame. A handsome hotel has become
the rendezvous of the traveler, instead of the boarding
house, where all sat down together. Public school
buildings and a beautiful Y. M. C. A. building occupy the
ground where once were sanburned and barren rocks, and
pointing to the heavens are the spires of the churches,
where the people meet in reverence as they do in the
fashionable promenades of the greater cities. Huge capital,
which has lain sleeping in the vault of wealth, is
walking out of the opened doors to seek investment in
what is the Mecca for the investor, and with its coming
to Bisbee is being revealed more and more her vast possibilities.
Bisbee has one of the b€lst supplies of water there
is in the territory. It is obtained in or near the city of
Naco, a distance of nine miles from Bisbee, and is the
product of an artesian well, which source is unfailing,
and the quality of the water is of the highest character.

CLIFTON.
A growing and prosperous city in Graham county on
the Arizona & New Mexico and Coronada railroads. In
Clifton was smelted the first copper ore ever produced
in Arizona and it is now one of the important copper
mining camps of this country. There is hardly a city,
town or camp in Arizona that has had a more rapid
growth during the last six years than Clifton, the pioneer
camp of the territory. For many years after the location
of the place the business was almost exclusively done
by the Arizona Copper Company, and while the mercantile
business of that company is still by far the largest
in the place, there are many other important and prosperous
stores, representing every line of trade, and all
the professions are well represented.
There are but three streets passing through the
place, one on either side of the San Francisco river and
Chase Creek street. The place may be described as being
divided into four sections. First, the old, original
business location on the east side of the river, occupying
a space just large enough to accommodate a row of

buildings with room for a street in front of them. Here
a re located the banks and some of the large stores. The
·second important business section of Clifton is located
on either side of the main street leading up Chase Creek
and on to Morenci. Here are large stores, hotels, etc.,
this section }1aving been mostly built up during the past
five years. \Vhat is known as North Clifton is located
furth er up the San Francisco river, but on the opposite
·side from the original business section; h ere is located
·One of the handsomest school buildings in Arizona. What
is known as South Clifton is occupied entirely by residences,
and includes many handsome homes. The population
of Clifton has probably been doubled within the
past five years and may now be conservatively estimated
at 6,000, and it is increasing at a rapid rate and the
.active development work now being carried on. by half
.a dozen mining CQmpanies on properties so located as to
be tributary to Clifton warrants the prediction that the
place will double its population within the n ext five
years; the indications are certainly most flatt ering for
a rapid growth. During 1908 the output from the leading
copper mines was: Arizona Copper Co., 28,000,000
pounds ; Detroit Copper Co., 18,000,000 pounds; Shannon
Copper Co., 15,000,000 pounds, and there will be an
increase during 1909. Population 6,000. Altitude 3,415
feet. '
