through the middle of which runs the international boundary,
separ ating them. The total population of the two
towns is about 6,500, that on the south side of the boundary
slightly predominating. The trade of the town
comes from the rich mining regions in northern Sonora
and southern Arizona, which are steadily developing.
Nogales, Sonora, is the seat of the federal court of the
Republic of Mexico, and the headquarters of an extensive
customs collecting district. It is also the headquarters
of an American consular district. Nogales, Arizona,
is the principal port of entry for the United States
customs collection distri ct of Arizona. The· tovvn has
five churches. A fine public school building. A foundry
and machine shop. ' A large cigar factory ships its
prodt1ct far and wide. The town is lighted by electricity,
and the company operating the lighting plant has also
an excellent ice plant. Five hotels, one bank, three hewspapers,
one daily and two weeklies. Several large GOmmercial
houses conduct extensive jobbing business, and
the place is also headquarters for several mining companies
operating in the surrounding district. In the
valley of the Santa Cruz, near at hand, is a good farming
country, and the cattle ranges in the country are good
arid well stocked. The United States Reclamation Service
in March, 1907, established a gauging station on the
Santa Cruz river, near the city, to secure data preliminarv
to the construction of a dam and reservoir that will
re~laim the arid lands of the Santa Cruz valley. Population
6,500. Altitude 3,800 feet.
