Executive Order 2004-10 CONTINUING THE ARIZONA GOVERNOR'S COUNCIL ON HEALTH, PHYSICAL FITNESS AND SPORTS (Superceding Executive Orders 80-4 and 85-1) WHEREAS, the well-being of Arizona's citizens is directly related to their active lifestyles; and WHEREAS, obesity poses a significant health threat to more Arizonans than ever before; and WHEREAS, a regular program of physical activity and a healthy diet for children and adults can reduce obesity and the risk of many chronic diseases; and WHEREAS, the Arizona Governor's Council on Health, Physical Fitness and Sports was created in 1980 to promote health and physical fitness in Arizona; and WHEREAS, Arizona continues to need a council to coordinate, support and disseminate information about physical activity programs offered by the public and the private sectors; and WHEREAS, the development of a partnership between government, private citizens and businesses can help accomplish the goal of better physical fitness and health for all Arizonans; NOW THEREFORE, I, Janet Napolitano, Governor of the State of Arizona, do hereby continue the Arizona Governor's Council on Health, Physical Fitness and Sports and delineate herein its structure and duties. 1. The Council shall consist of no more than twenty-five and no fewer than nineteen members, each appointed by the Governor. It shall meet at least six times annually. The membership shall have staggered terms of two and three years, with one half of the body holding each term length. The duties of the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Health are as follows: a. To foster cooperative relationships between government agencies, educational institutions, businesses, associations and foundations to improve the availability of physical activity, fitness and health activities to all citizens in Arizona;

To encourage, promote development of, and give recognition to programs that increase interest, enthusiasm and participation in health and physical activity; To make policy and program recommendations to the Governor relating to physical activity and health; and To coordinate activities with the President of the United States' Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and to carry out their programs at the state level whenever feasible.
