FABULOUS The County Seat of Coconino County, Second Largest County in U. S. A.
Flagstaff was incoi por a toil May 26, 1894. This
year, sixty-lour years later, it is a thriving city of
20,000 population within a radius of four miles. It
set v es a trade area with a population of 50,000.
Flagstaff is the largest and fastest growing city
in northern Arizona. Situated at the foot of the San
Francisco Peaks at an elevation <>f 7,001) feet it is
surrounded by many lakes and streams and is recog­nized
as one of the state's finest vacation centers.
Sun shines 80 percent of daylight hours. Annual pre­cipitation
averages 19 inches, snowfall five feet, hu­midity
27 degiees. Seldom is there a dav in summer
the thermometer passes 90 degrees. (9!? degrees is the
highest of record;. Average winter temperature is
about 29 degrees stimulating but not severe.
The city is administered by a citv council of
seven members in a modern city hall erected in I 950.
The countv government is administered hv three
county supervisors A new half-million dollar addi­tion
to the courthouse was completed in 1956. Flag-stalf

Several national monuments are nearby, adinin-isteted
by the National Park Service, each with its
superintendent in charge Walnut Canyon. Wupatki.
Sunset Crater. Navajo. Tn/igoot and Montezuma
Castle. Coconino county is about 68.5 peicent fed­erally
owned. The Navajo and Hopi Indian reserva­tions
cover a considerable area in the county.
Flagstaff is truly "a city in the pines.'' The ex­tensive
Ponderosa pine forests which surround the
community have been the key to its development
into the leading' commercial and travel center ot
northern Arizona.
Its name came from a pine tree stripped ot its
branches on July 4. 1876. by an energetic lumberjack
to serve as a "flagstaff for flying the American flag
on the 100th anniversary of the first Independence
Dav.
Much of the route now followed by I . S. High­way
66 across northern Arizona had been used lor
manv years as a wagon trail route to California, anil
the site of the "flagstaff" was a popular camping
site because of the spring which furnished abundant
water.
When the railroad reached Flagstaff in 188S
and continued ils push on westward, there was cre­ated
a big demand for railroad ties. A company was
formed to fill this need, and the lumbering industry
had its beginning. Todav several large and manv
small lumber mills operate in the citv and nearby.
Ari/ona State College, a fullv accredited four-venr
institution, has increased its enrollment to about
1.150 students. It offer's courses in most liberal arts
subjects, and is popular for pre-law. pi e-modicine.

The spectacular natural beauty ot such places
as Oak Creek canyon, the Navajo and Hopi Indian
country, the Coconino National Potest and the one
and onlv Grand Canyon makes Flagstaff the center
of unsurpassed vacation country. Income from tour­ist
travel is an important part ot Flagstatt's economy.

The city abounds in good hotels and motels, shops
and stores, service stations and garages to serve
the traveling public, while nearby there are many
quaint and modern resorts to fit the purse of the
most limited budgets. Perfect for summer vacations
with its cool weather while other parts of the state
are sweltering, each season has its special appeal.
During the fall, the Aspens on the mountains
turn to a brilliant gold and are a spectacular thing
to see—the Aspen trails attract photographers, ama­teur
and professional, by the thousands, to record in
their own way, a picture history of their colorful
splendor; during the winter the slopes of the San
Francisco Peaks offer skiing thrills galore, and many
ski meets are held for top-flight enthusiasts the world
over. The springtime is an excellent season to visit
the Indian country.
Farmers and ranchers from far and near use
Flagstaff as their trade center. More sheep and cattle
are raised in the Flagstaff area than in any other
part of the state. Great quantities of beans are raised
by the dry farming methods. Oak Greek canvon is
famous for its fine fruits, especially apples, peaches
and pears.
Outstanding among its manufacturing plants ate
a volcanic cinder block plant, an excelsior plant, a
wood pulp plant, and large box and moulding plants.
Instrumental in Flagstaff's rapid growth is the
$421 million Glen Canyon Dam which is presently
being constructed on the Colorado river northeast
of Flagstaff. When completed this will be the second
highest dam in the United States, rising 700 feet
above bed rock and 580 feet above the normal level
of the Colorado river.
Flagstaff's clear, clean air has long been of in­terest
to the scientific and astronomical profession.
In addition to the world famous Lowell Observatory
(it was here that the planet Pluto was discovered),
the U. S. Naval Observatory has erected a plant of
national importance.
Main line transportation facilities make Flag­staff
ideal for many types of industrial development.
The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway main
line (Chicago to Los Angeles J runs through Flag­staff.
Greyhound and Continental Trailway bus lines
serve the city. Frontier Airlines serve the city with
six schedules daily. Highway 66, one of the heaviest
traveled transcontinental routes in America, crosses
Highway 89 which runs from Mexico to Canada, at
Flagstaff.
Flagstaff is a friendly city with pleasant sur­roundings
and environment—a good place to live
and raise your children. It offers many cultural ad­vantages,
seldom expected or found in a city its size.
Thirty-one churches of many denominations are
active. There are thirty-five civic and fraternal clubs.
Annual events that attract visitors from all over
the nation are the Southwest all-Indian Pow-Wow,
held every July 4th; the Northern Arizona Square
Dance Festival in August; the J G's Renegade Ro­deo
in August; the Coconino County Fair in Sep­tember;
the Aspen Trails Festival early in October,
and the Winter Sports Festival in January. Flagstaff
is also host to many conventions each year.
