canvass and compiled in such a way as to insure
maximum accuracy. The time between final check
of information and delivery has been minimized by
the use of modern data processing technology and
the fastest "in house" production capability in the
industry.
It has always been our policy to provide accurate
and comprehensive directory service to those communities
that desire the "finest". We realize however
that some errors and omissions are inevitable
and earnestly request that these be brought to our
attention. These errors and omissions will be corrected
in the next edition of the directory. It is
only through the interest of the subscribers and
users of the directory that each new edition can
surpass the last.

THE STORY OF THE COCONINO NATIONAL FOREST
The Coconino National Forest consists of 1,800,000 acres
of magnificent Ponderosa pine timber and productive grazing
land, beautiful mountain lakes, deep canyons cut through colorful
rock formations, snow-capped peaks, and recreation land
second to none.
This land of many uses is administered by the U . S.
Department of Agriculture's Forest Service. Forest Rangers
direct the management and development of National Forest
outdoor recreation, range, timber, watershed, and wildlife
and fish under the Multiple Use-Sustained Yield Act of 1960,
which dednrprf thst these resources Tvere lol>e used in combinations
that best meet the needs of the American People.
The name Coconino comes from a Hop! word, meaning
"uneducated" or "childlike in a religious sense". The Hopi
pronunciation is KI-HO-NT-NO while the English pronounce
It KO-KO-NE-NO.
The Coconino National Forest, with headquarters situated
In Flagstaff, stretches from desert and irrigation country
below Camp Verde up over the Mogollon R im to the San Francisco
Mountains with their icy 12,000 foot volcanic cones, and
from the wildly beautiful Sycamore Canyon country on the west
to the cool tall-timbered lake country east of Mormon Lake.
Much of Coconino lies on the Colorado Plateau, which is
part of the great geologic uplift through which the Colorado
River has cut its path. The Forest occupies a section of the
filateau that is an irregular tableland of pine forest 75 miles
orig and 25 miles wide. Here are stands of commercial timber
valued at $50,000,000, supporting an important logging and
lumber economy in Northern Arizona. Elk, antelope, and mule
deer attracts hunters, wildlife photographers, and thou sands
of other interested Americans. Here graze most of the 35,000
sheep and cattle which use Coconino National Forest range,
producing beef and wool for a growing America.
The Coconino National Forest, with several feet of snow on
the plateau in winter and frequent rainstorms in late summer,
is a vital source of water for Arizona. Th*> stres*n2 ana
underground basins fed by the Coconino provide domestic
water supplies for Flagstaff, Winslow, and in part for the
Phoenix-Salt River Valley area through the Verde and East
Verde Rivers. The lesser northern flow of the Coconino goes
into the Little Colorado River and thence into the Colorado
above Grand Canyon. Water in the desert is an asset beyond
price for cities, farms, power, recreation lakes, industry,
and fishing streams. Most of the water in the West comes
from the high protected watersheds of the National Forests.
You w i l l enjoy your visit to the Coconino National Forest.
Whatever your taste for recreation or natural beauty, or viewing
or using natural resources, you w i l l be satisfied in the
Coconino. There are scenic views of red-rock canyons, solid
stands of big pine timber, deer and turkey to hunt with gun or
camera, streams and lakes with fish to catch, golden aspens
to see in the fall, ski slopes to run in winter. They are a l l
there for your enjoyment and economic benefit.
rv
BISTORT Flagstaff, Arizona, at 7,000 feet elevation, is truly the
"CITYIN THE PINES". The extensive Ponderosa pine forests
which surround the community have been the key to its development
into the leading commercial and travel center of
Northern Arizona.
The first settler was Edward Whipple, who operated a
saloon near the Flagstaff spring in 1871. The second white
man was F. F. McMillan, who settled north of the present
Flagstaff. K
The name "Flagstaff" comes from a pine tree beil
stripped of its branches to serve as a "flagstaff" forflyii
the American flag on the 100th anniversary of Independent
Day, July 4, 1876. This "flagstaff" was said to be ne^rflifX
where the Texaco tanks and the railroad tracks just south 6fV|<S
Highway 66 are now. Highway 66 across Northern A r i z o n a / ^ ' *
was used for many years as a wagon train route to California^,
and the site of the "flagstaff" was a popular camping areaji
The "flagstaff" stood for many years to guide other parti* '
along the trail.
The lumber industry had its start from an early sawmi
built in 1882. This mill was established to furnish ties fo
the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad which was extended to Flagstaff
that year. The Atlantic and Pacific subsequently became
the Santa Fe's main trans - continental line through
Arizona. At present, timber being harvested on a sustained
yield basis supports an active wood products industry.
Plagued by fires in its early history, Flagstaff was destroyed
in 1884 and again in 1886. By 1891, Flagstaff was
made county seat of the newly formed Coconino County, but
it was not until May 26, 1894 that the City was incorporated.
That same year, the world famous Lowell Observatory was
located on Mars Hill inside the west city limits. Arizona
State College began its first college session in the autumn of
1899. The College became a fully accredited University in
May 1966 and is called Northern Arizona University. In 1908
the Coconino National Forest was created with headquarters
at Flagstaff, and the first forest experimental station was
established at Fort Valley, nine miles northwest of the city.
The Museum of Northern Arizona was founded by Dr. Harold
S. Coltonin 1928. The same year saw the start of the annual
Southwest All-Indian Pow Wow. Organized snow sports began
in 1940 at the Arizona Snow Bowl on the 12,340 foot Mt.
Agassiz, second highest of the San Francisco Peaks.
Flagstaff is governedby statute. Six councilmenand the
mayor are elected. Also a city manager is appointed. The
Municipal Airport, the Federal Housing Development and the
Public Library are under the city administration. The police
department consists of 46 commissioned sworn personnel.
The fire department is manned by 43 full time men. There
is a city building code and zone restrictions.
The city is noted for its long list of special events, conventions
, Forest Service Camp Grounds, and areas of vacation
appeal. It is also called "The City of Seven Wonders", as
noted by the following - Grand Canyon, Wupatki, Sunset
Crater, Walnut Canyon, Oak Creek Canyon, Meteor Crater,
and the San Francisco Peaks.

SAN FRANCISCO PEAKS
" N U V A T - l - K Y A N - B Y " , The original Hopl name for the
SAN FRANCISCO PEAKS, translated means "HIGH PLACES
OF THE SNOWS". Here Is the traditional home of the Kachinas,
supernatural beings who dwell on the Peaks and who come
down during the growing season to frequent the Hopi villages.
The Peaks were renamed more than three centuries ago by
the Oraibi Franciscans in honor of their patron saint.
Of the four peaks, Humphrey's Peak Is the highest, being
named for railroad surveyor and Army Engineer, Andrew
Atkinson Humphrey (1810-83). Its elevation is 12,670 feet.
Next is Agassiz Peak, 12,340 feet, named for Jean Louis
Rudolphe Agassiz * 1817 -73), a French geologist and zoologist.
Fremont's Peak, 11,940 feet, is named for John
Charles Fremont (1813-90), governor of Arizona Territory
1878-82. Doyle Peak, 9,000 feet is named for a cattleman,
Allen Doyle (1850-1920).
These San Francisco Peaks are remnants of an ancient
volcano that may have reached 15,000 feet during its greatest
activity. Erosion has cut it to its present size and shape.
New geological studies show that the glaciatlon of the
Peaks was both more extensive and more active over the last
one million years than supposed. Seven distinct stages of
glaciatlon have been found, the earliest dates back to about
one million years ago and the latest occurring within the last
1,000 years. The earliest glacier, believed to represent the
s o - c a l l e d Illinoian glaciatlon, third of the four major ice
sheets that swept down into the United States during the Ice
Age, was the most extensive. Through recent geologic time,
the Peaks were alternately hot and cold and apparently sometimes
hot and cold at the same time.
Above the timberllne are lichens and mosses clinging to
rocks amid howling Arctic-Alpine blizzards. In the top band
of trees are Hudsonian Foxtail Pine and Englemann Spruce.
Next below is the Canadian Zone of Douglas and White Firs
and quaking Aspen. Nearer the foot of the mountain Ponderosa
Pine grows abundantly, thus giving this area one of the World's
largest stands of Ponderosa Pine trees.
The Arizona Snow Bowl is located on Mt. Agassiz and
provides recreation for many ski enthusiasts during the winter.
During the summer vacationers enjoy a ski lift ride to the top
of the Mountain, catching a glimpse of portions of California,
Nevada, Utah, and sometimes Colorado and New Mexico.
COCONINO COUNTY
Hopi Pronunciation: KI-HO-NI-NO
English Pronunciation: KO-KO-NE-NO
Hopi word, meaning uneducated or childlike in a religious
sense.
COCONINO COUNTY is the second largest county in the
United States having 18,573 square miles. Flagstaff i s the
county seat situated at an altitude of 7,000 feet. Towering
above the city are the San Francisco Peaks which rise to a
height of 12,670 feet and are snow-capped during much of the
year. This is the home of the Arizona Snow Bowl, a fine ski
area. Also, the home of the Kachinas. According to the
Pueblo Indian legends, these are supernatural beings who
dwell in the Peaks.
One mile west of the city is the Lowell Observatory,
world renowned for its astronomical achievement, including
the disco very of Planet Pluto in 1930. The Pioneer Historical
Museum is located two miles north on Hwy. 180. This old
two-story, tuffa rock building, houses a fine coUection of
Flagstaff's and the Northland's early history. One mile
further on Hwy. 180 is the Museum of Northern Arizona which
offers an introduction to the geology, biology and an tropology
of Northern Arizona.
Located within Coconino County are four National Monuments.
The Grand Canyon, one oi the seven wonders of the
world, Sunset Crater which is dominated by a massive 1,000
foot high volcanic cinder cone. Wupatki National Monument,
remains of 12th-century pueblos, prehistoric ruins and colorful
remains of an Indian ''Land-Rush" that resulted from the
eruption of nearby Sunset Crater; and Walnut Canyon National
Monument approximately 400 feet deep with remains of some
300 small prehistoric cliff dwellings of the 13th century cliff
dwellers.
To the west of Flagstaff 28 miles, and in Coconino County,
is the picturesque town of Williams, headquarters for the
Kaibab National Forest and noted for its B i l l Williams Mountain
Men. To the south 18 miles is Oak Creek Canyon, sometimes
called Red Rock Country. Nestled at the foot of this canyon
is the small, unique town of Sedona. Traveling toward the
north is the newest town in Arizona, Page, site of the Glen
Canyon Dam built across the Colorado River, and the Glen
Canyon Bridge, highest of its kind in the world. The new Glen
Canyon Recreation Area offers some of the finest fishing to
be had. Northeast of Flagstaff are the Navajo and Hopl Reservations
while, nestled at the bottom of the Grand Canyon lives
the carefree Havasupai Indian Tribe.
The extensive Ponderosa Pine forests (one of the world's
two largest) surrounds the community and the vast 1,800,000
Coconino National Forest, with headquarters in Flagstaff,
lies in Coconino County. This has been the key to the City's
growing lumber industry, for which Coconino County is mainly
noted along with the fine summer and winter cattle range and
its unparalleled tourist attractions.

Flagstaff is one of the unique cities in America whose
interests reach from the far horizons of tomorrow to the prehistoric
past. One mile west is Lowell Observatory, one of
.the foremost astronomical observatories in the country where
Pluto was discovered in 1930, and, where the U. S. A ir
Force's Chart Information Center (ACIC) had Lunar Mapping
activities. Four other observatories are located in the Flagstaff
area - one of them being the U . S. Naval Observatory
with a 61 inch astro metric telescope. Lunar Topographic

U. S. Geological Survey, with field work both at Sunset Crater
and Meteor Crater.
At this time, there are 9 elementary schools; 2 junior
high schools, 2 high schools and 2 Catholic elementary schools.
Northern Arizona University with an enrollment of over 9,000
students has an expansion program under way with construction
expected to be completed in the near future. There
are five principal shopping areas. A fine 103 bed Community
Hospital serves the Flagstaff area. Also some 59 physicians,
surgeons, dentists, optometrists, and chiropractors serve
Flagstaff.
More than forty churches and a score of Service and
Fraternal Clubs provide a cultural background befitting most
desires. Two museums; the Museum of Northern Arizona
offering the visitor an introduction to the anthropology, geology
and biology of Northern Arizona and the Pioneer Historical
Museum, an old two-story, Tuffa rock building constructed
In 1907-08 as the County Hospital for the aged. Since
1961 this building has housed many of the antiques, pictures,
and furniture of the early day pioneers of Northern Arizona.
These add greatly to our cultural interests, along with
many fine programs through the Flagstaff Symphony, Summer
Festival, Fall Festival of Stars, Creative Arts Festival and
numerous other attractions. Flagstaff's climate is wonderful
with four defined seasons in the year. A city park, several
lakes and picnic areas, and two golf courses which are just
a few minutes away, fishing the year around at one of our
lakes or beautiful Oak Creek Canyon, and hunting in season
for quail, dove, geese, turkey, deer, antelope, elk, and
bear make Flagstaff an ideal place to live. Coconino County
Paf k Is located 5 miles south of town.
For the outdoor sports lover we have many varied activities
including the Arizona Snow Bowl, with complete facilities
of a Riblet Double Chair Lift, also a Poma lift, and
Platter Pull for the beginner. During the summer months
the Chair Lift operates, and a ride to the top of Mt. Agassiz,
12,340 feet high, is a sight to be remembered for the far
reaching, magnificent view to the Grand Canyon and into
California and Mexico.
The City of Flagstaff is located in a resort and tourist
travel region in the heart of the 2 million acre Coconino
National Forest and is noted for lumbering as one of its major
industries. It is the scat of Coconino County, second largest
county in area in the United States. More than 92% of Coconino
County land is controlled by the Federal Government in the
Coconino and Kaibab National Forests, the Indian Reservations
and National Park Service areas. In the last ten years,
Flagstaff has enjoyed a population growth of over 43% and
now has a trade area of approximately 75,000.
Living in Flagstaff is very little if anymore expensive
than anywhere else. In many Instances we know it is less.
New and modern two and three bedroom homes with all u t i l i ties,
sidewalks, and paving can be had for $25,000 and up.
Older homes for less. You might have to wait for a few weeks
to get the home of your choice on the lot of your choice, but
it will be worth It. Rentals are somewhat a different story.
They are not plentiful but can be found. Apartments rent between
$100 to $200 a month depending on your needs. There
are a number of trailer parks and Mobile Home areas a v a i lable.
Flagstaff has one daily paper. The Arizona Daily Sun,

CLIMATE - Flagstaff has a typical mountain climate,
with most of the precipitation occuring in mid-winter and

of thunderstorms, which contributes to the cooling effect
caused by the altitude to make summers here quite cool and
pleasant. There are only three days per year, on the average,
when temperatures rise to 90 degrees or above. Summer
nights are always cool, for the temperatures usually drop
to around 50 degrees. Flagstaff altitude is 6,993 feet.
Most of the winter precipitation is in the form of snow,
with an average snowfall of 73.3 inches per year, ideal for
winter sports. Highways are seldom blocked by snow, and
then only for a few hours at a time. Due to Flagstaff's l o cation
in the southern region of the Rockies, the low temperatures
usually experienced in mountain areas are lessened
here. There are only nine days per year, on the average,
when temperature falls to zero or below.
Average precipitation for the year is 18.47 inches and
the relative humidity is low. The average growing season
is four months, with the last killing frost the latter part of
May, and the first killing frost the latter part of September.
Due to Flagstaff's protected location at the foot of the s u r rounding
mountains, the daily average wind velocity rarely
exceeds 14 miles per hour.
