HISTORY
Flagstaff, A r i z o n a , at 7,000 feet elevation, is t r u l y the \
" C I T Y IN T H E P I N E S " . The extensive Ponderosa pine f o r e s t s •
which surround the community have been the key to i t s development
into the leading c o m m e r c i a l and travel center of
N o r t h e r n A r i z o n a .
The f i r s t s e t t l e r was Edward Whipple, who operated a
saloon near the Flagstaff s p r i n g i n 1871. The second white
man was F . F . M c M i l l a n , who settled north of the present
Flagstaff. \
The name " F l a g s t a f f " comes f r om a pine tree be
s t r i p p e d of its branches to serve as a "flagstaff" f o r fly
the A m e r i c a n f l a g on the 100th a n n i v e r s a r y of Independei
Day, July 4, 1876. This "flagstaff" was said to be n<
where the Texaco tanks and the r a i l r o a d t r a c k s just south
Highway 66 a r e now. Highway 66 a c r o s s Northern A r i z o :
was used f o r many years as a wagon t r a i n route to C a l i f o r ni
and the s i t e of the "flagstaff" was a popular camping are;
The "flagstaff" stood f o r many y e a r s to guide other p a r ti
along the t r a i l .
The lumber industry had i t s s t a r t f r om an e a r l y sawmi
b u i l t i n 1882. This m i l l was established to f u r n i s h t i e s fo
the A t l a n t i c and P a c i f i c R a i l r o a d which was extended to F l a g staff
that y e a r . The A t l a n t i c and P a c i f i c subsequently became
the Santa F e ' s main trans - continental l i n e through
A r i z o n a . At present, timber being harvested on a sustained
y i e l d b a s i s supports an a c t i v e wood products industry.
Plagued by f i r e s in its e a r l y h i s t o r y , Flagstaff was destroyed
in 1884 and again in 1886. By 1891, Flagstaff was
made county seat of the newly formed Coconino County, but
it was not u n t i l May 26, 1894 that the C i t y was incorporated.
That same y e a r , the w o r l d famous Lowell Observatory was
located on M a r s H i l l inside the west c i t y l i m i t s . A r i z o na
State College began its f i r s t c o l l e g e s e s s i o n i n the autumn of
1899. The College became a f u l l y a c c r e d i t e d U n i v e r s i t y in
May 1966 and i s c a l l e d N o r t h e r n A r i z o n a U n i v e r s i t y . In 1908
the Coconino National F o r e s t was created with headquarters
at Flagstaff, and the f i r s t forest experimental station was
established at F o r t V a l l e y , nine m i l e s northwest of the c i t y.
The Museum of Northern A r i z o n a was founded by D r . H a r o ld
S. C o l t o n i n 1928. The same year saw the start of the annual
Southwest A l l - I n d i a n Pow Wow. Organized snow s p o r t s began
i n 1940 at the A r i z o n a Snow Bowl on the 12,340 foot Mt.
A g a s s i z , second highest of the San F r a n c i s c o Peaks.
Flagstaff i s governed by statute. Six councilmenand the
mayor are e l e c t e d . Also a c i t y manager is appointed. The
Municipal A i r p o r t , the F e d e r a l Housing Development and the
P u b l i c L i b r a r y a r e under the c i t v a d m i n i s t r a t i o n . The police
department consists of 26 uniformed men and women.
The f i r e department is manned by 28 regular men plus 17
volunteers. T h e r e i s a c i t y b u i l d i n g code and zone r e s t r i c t i o n s .
The c i t y i s noted f o r its long l i s t of s p e c i a l events, conventions,
F o r e s t S e r v i c e Camp Grounds, and a r e a s of vacation
appeal. It i s also called "The C i t y of Seven Wonders", as
noted by the following - Grand Canyon, Wupatki, Sunset
C r a t e r , Walnut Canyon, Oak C r e e k Canyon, Meteor C r a t e r ,
and the San F r a n c i s c o Peaks.

T H E STORY O F T H E COCONINO N A T I O N A L FtJREST
The Coconino National F o r e s t c o n s i s t s of 1, 800, 000 acres
of magnificent Ponderosa pine timber and productive grazing
l a n d , beautiful mountain l a k e s , deep canyons cut through c o l o r ful
rock formations, snow-capped peaks, and recreation land
second to none.
This land of many uses is administered by the U . S.
Department of A g r i c u l t u r e ' s F o r e s t S e r v i c e . Forest Rangers
d i r e c t the management and development of National Forest
outdoor r e c r e a t i o n , range, timber, watershed, and w i l d l i fe
and f i s h under the Multiple Use-Sustained Y i e l d Act of 1900,
which declared that these resources were to be used in c o m b i nations
that best meet the needs of the A m e r i c a n People.
The name Coconino comes from a Hopi word, meaning
"uneducated" or " c h i l d l i k e in a r e l i g i o u s sense". The Hopi
pronunciation is K I - H O - N I - N O while the English pronounce
it K O - K O - N E - N O .
The Coconino National F o r e s t , with headquarters situated
in Flagstaff, stretches from desert and i r r i g a t i o n country
below Camp Verde upoverthe Mogollon R im to the San F r a n c
i s c o Mountains with t h e i r icy 12,000 foot volcanic cones, and
f r om the w i l d l y beautiful Sycamore Canyon country on the west
to the cool t a l i - t i m b e r e d lake country east of Mormon Lake.
Much of Coconino l i e s on the Colorado Plateau, which is
part of the great geologic uplift through which the Colorado
R i v e r has cut its path. The F o r e s t occupies a s e c t i on of the
plateau that is an i r r e g u l a r tableland of pine forest 75 m i l es
long and 25 miles wide. Here are stands of c o m m e r c i a l timber
valued at $50, OIK), (KJ0, supporting an important logging and
lumber economy in N o r t h e r n A r i z o n a . E l k , antelope, and mule
deer attracts hunters, w i l d l i f e photographers, and thousands
of other interested A m e r i c a n s . He re graze most of the :S5,000
sheep and cattle which use Coconino National Forest range,
producing beef and wool for a growing A m e r i c a .
The Coconino National F o r e s t , with several feet of snow on
the plateau in winter and frequent rainstorms in late summer,
is a vital source of water for A r i z o n a . The streams and
underground basins fed bv the Coconino provide domestic
water supplies for Flagstaff, Winslow, and in part for the
Phoenix-Salt River Valley area through the Verde and East
Verde R i v e r s . The l e s s e r northern flow of the Coconino goes
into the L i t t l e Colorado River and thence into the Colorado
above Grand Canyon. Water in the desert is an asset beyond
p r i c e for c i t i e s , farms, jxnver, recreation l a k e s , industry,
and fishing streams. Most of the water in the West comes
f r om the high protected watersheds of the National F o r e s t s.
You w i l l enjoy your v i s i t to the Coconino National F o r e s t.
Whatever your taste for r e c r e a t i o n or natural beauty, or viewing
or using natural resources, you w i l l be satisfied in the
Coconino. There are scenic views of r e d - r o c k canyons, s o l id
stands of big pine timber, deer and turkey to hunt with gun or
camera, streams and lakes with fish to catch, golden aspens
to see in the f a l l , ski slopes to run in winter. They are a ll
there for your enjoyment and economic benefit.

" N U V A T - I - K Y A N - B Y " , The o r i g i n a l Hopi name for the
S A N F R A N C I S C O P E A K S , translated means " H I GH P L A C ES
OF T H E SNOWS". Here is the t r a d i t i o n a l home of the K a c h i n a s ,
supernatural beings who dwell on the Peaks and who come
down during the growing season to frequent the Hopi v i l l a g e s.
The Peaks were renamed more than three centuries ago by
the O r a i b i F r a n c i s c a n s in honor of their patron saint.
Of the four peaks, Humphrey's Peak is the highest, being
named for r a i l r o a d s u r v e y o r and A r m y Engineer, Andrew
A t k i n s o n Humphrey (1810-83). Its elevation is 12,670 feet.
Next is A g a s s i z Peak, 12,340 feet, named for Jean L o u is
Rudolphe A g a s s i z *1817-73), a F r e n c h geologist and zool
o g i s t . Fremont's Peak, 11,940 feet, is named for John
C h a r l e s Fremont (1813-90), governor of A r i z o n a T e r r i t o ry
1878-82. Doyle Peak, 9,000 feet i s named for a cattleman,
A l l e n Doyle (1850-1920).
These San F r a n c i s c o Peaks a r e remnants of an ancient
volcano that may have reached 15,000feet during i t s greatest
a c t i v i t y . E r o s i o n has cut it to i t s present s i z e and shape.
New geological studies show that the glaciation of the
Peaks was both more extensive and more active over the l a st
one m i l l i o n y e a r s than supposed. Seven distinct stages of
g l a c i a t i on have been found, the e a r l i e s t dates back to about
one m i l l i o n y e a r s ago and the l a t e s t o c c u r r i n g w i t h i n the l a st
1,000 y e a r s . The e a r l i e s t g l a c i e r , b e l i e v e d to represent the
s o - c a l l e d I l l i n o i a n g l a c i a t i o n , third of the four major ice
sheets that swept down into the United States during the Ice
Age, was the most extensive. Through recent geologic t i m e,
the Peaks were a l t e r n a t e l y hot and c o l d and apparently sometimes
hot and c o l d at the same t i m e.
Above the timber l i n e a r e l i c h e n s and mosses c l i n g i n g to
r o c k s amid howling A r c t i c - A l p i n e b l i z z a r d s . In the top band
of trees are Hudsonian F o x t a i l Pine and Englemann Spruce.
Next below i s the Canadian Zone of Douglas and White F i rs
and quaking A s p e n . N e a r e r the foot of the mountain Ponderosa
Pine grows abundantly, thus g i v i n g this a r e a one of the W o r l d 's
l a r g e s t stands of Ponderosa Pine t r e e s.
The A r i z o n a Snow Bowl i s located on Mt. A g a s s i z and
provides r e c r e a t i o n f o r many s k i enthusiasts during the w i n t e r .
During the summer vacationers enjoy a s k i l i f t r i d e to the top
of the Mountain, catching a g l i m p s e of portions of C a l i f o r n i a ,
Nevada, Utah, and sometimes Colorado and New Mexico.

A number in the top line (19) multiplied by a number in the last column on the left (18) produces the number where
the top line and the side line meet (342) and so on throughout the table.
A number in the table (342) divided by the number at the top of that column (19) results in the number (18) at the
extreme left; also, a number in the table (342) divided by the number (18) at the extreme left gives the number (19) at
the top o f the column and so on throughout the table.

air. Call i nysician.
B L E E D I N G Press hard on wound with sterile compress until bleeding stops. Send for doctor if it
is severe.
BURNS If mild, with skin unbroken and no blisters, plunge into ice water until pain subsides.

Apply sterile compresses and keep patient quiet and comfortably warm until doctor's arrival. Do
not try to clean burn, or to break blisters.
C H E M I C A L S IN E Y E - With patient lying down, pour cupfuls o f water immediately into corner o f
eye, letting it run to other side to remove chemicals thoroughly. Cover with sterile compress and
call doctor.
C H O K I N G - Give the cough reflex time to work. Back slapping or reaching into the mouth with
a finger may force the object down into the windpipe. Cough spasms usually expel the foreign
body. But i f choking continues and the victim turns increasingly blue, slap the back between trie
shoulder blades. Do this only as a last resort. Start mouth-to-mouth resuscitation i f breathing
stops. Send for a physician and rush the patient to the hospital.

with head turned to side i f he becomes unconscious. Loosen clothing and open windows. Wave
aromatic spirits o f ammonia or smelling salts under nose. Keep patient lying quietly for at least 15
minutes after he regains consciousness. Call doctor if faint lasts for more than a few minutes.

Stressing that your breath can save a life, the American Red Cross gives the following directions
for mouth-to-mouth resuscitation i f the victim is not breathing:
• Turn victim on his back and begin artificial respiration at once.
• Wipe out quickly any foreign matter visible in the mouth, using your fingers or a c l o th wrapped
around your fingers.
• Tilt victim's head back.
• Pull or push jaw into jutting-out position.
• If v i c t im is a small child, place your mouth tightly over his mouth and nose and blow gently into
his lungs about 20 times a minute. If victim is adult, cover the mouth with the mouth, pinch his
nostrils shut, and blow vigorously about 12 times a minute.
• If unable to get air into lungs o f v i c t i m , and i f head and jaw positions are correct, suspect foreign
matter in throat. To remove it, suspend a small c h i ld momentarily by the ankles or h o ld c h i ld
with head down for a moment and slap sharply between shoulder blades.
• If v i c t im is an adult, turn him on his side and use same procedure.
• Again, wipe mouth to remove foreign matter.
• Repeat breathing, removing mouth each time to allow for escape of air. Continue until victim
breathes for himself.
