HISTORY
Flagstaff, Arizona, at 7,000 feet elevation, is truly the
"CITY IN THE PINES". The extensive Ponderosa pine forests
which surround the community have been the key to its development
into the leading commercial and travel center of
Northern Arizona.
The first settler was Edward Whipple, who operated a
saloon near the Flagstaff spring in 1871. The second white
man was F. F. McMillan, who settled north of the present
Flagstaff.
The name "Flagstaff" comes from a pine tree bet
stripped of its branches to serve as a "flagstaff" forflyi
the American flag on the 100th anniversary of Independen
Day, July 4, 1876. This "flagstaff" was said to be n
where the Texaco tanks and the railroad tracks just south
Highway 66 are now. Highway 66 across Northern Arizo
was used for many years as a wagon train route to Californi
and the site of the "flagstaff" was a popular camping are
The "flagstaff" stood for many years to guide other parti
along the trail.
The lumber industry had its start from an early sawmi
built in 1882. This mill was established to furnish ties fo
the Atlanticand Pacific Rail road which was extended to Flagstaff
that year. The Atlantic and Pacific subsequently became
the Santa Fe's main trans - continental line through
Arizona. At present, timber being harvested on a sustained
yield basis supports an active wood products industry.
Plagued by fires in its early history, Flagstaff was destroyed
in 1884 and again in 1886. By 1891, Flagstaff was
made county seat of the newly formed Coconino County, but
it was not until May 26, 1894 that the City was incorporated.
That same year, the world-famous Lowell Observatory was
located on Mars Hill inside the west city limits. Arizona
State College began its first college session in the autumn of
1899. The College became a fully accredited University in
May 1966, and Is called Northern Arizona University. In 1908
the Coconino National Forest was created with headquarters
In Flagstaff and the first forest experimental station was
established at Fort Valley, nine miles northwest of the city.
The museum of Northern Arizona wasfoundedby Dr. Harold
S. Coltonin 1928. The same year saw the start of the annual
Southwest A11-Indian Pow Wow. Organized snow sports began
in 1940 at the Arizona Snow Bowl on the 12,340 foot Mt.
Agassiz, second highest of the San Francisco Peaks.
Flagstaff is governed by statute. Six councilmen and
the mayor are elected. Also, a city manager is appointed.
The Municipal Airport, The Federal Housing Development,
and the Public Library are under the city administration.
The police department consists of 45 officers, 1 chief and
46 commissioned personnel. The fire department is manned
by 43 regular men. There is a city building code and zone
restrictions.
The city is noted for its long list of special events, conventions,
Forest Service camp grounds, and areas of vacation
appeal. It is also called "The City of Seven Wonders", as
noted by the following : Grand Canyon, Wupatki, Sunset
Crater, Walnut Canyon, Oak Creek Canyon, Meteor Crater,
and the San Francisco Peaks.
V
THE STORY OF THE COCONINO NATIONAL FOREST
The Coconino National Forest consists of 1,800, 000 acres
of magnificent Ponderosa pine timber and productive grazing
land, beautiful mountain lakes, deep canyons cut through colorful
rock formations, snow-capj>ed peaks, and recreation land
second to none.
This land of many uses is administered by the U. S.
Departmentof Agriculture's Forest Service. Forest Rangers
direct the management and development of National Forest
outdoor recreation, range, timber, watershed, and wildlife
and fish under the Multiple Use-Sustained Yield Act of 19G0,
which declared that these resources were tobe used in combinations
that best meet the needs of the American People.
The name Coconino comes from a Hopi word, meaning
"uneducated" or "childlike in a religious sense". The Hopi
pronunciation is KI-HO-NI-NO while the English pronounce
it KO-KO-NE-NO.
The Coconino National Foresl, with headquarters situated
In Flagstaff, stretches from desert and irrigation country
below Camp Verde upoverthe Mogollon Rim to the San Francisco
Mountains with their icy 12,000 foot volcanic cones, and
from the wildly beautiful Sycamore Canyon country on the west
to the cool tall-timbered lake country east of Mormon Lake.
Much of Coconino lies on the Colorado Plateau, which is
part of the great geologic uplift through which the Colorado
River has cut its path. The Foresl occupies a section of the
plateau that is an Irregular tableland of pine forest 75 miles
longand 25mlles\vide. Here are stands of commercial timber
valued at $50,000,000, supporting an important logging and
lumber economy in Northern Arizona. Elk, antelope, and mule
deer attracts hunters, wildlife photographers, and thousands
ofother interested Americans. Here graze most of the 35,000
sheep and cattle which use Coconino National Forest range,
producing beef and wool for a growing America.
The Coconino National Forest, with several feet of snow on
the plateau in winterand frequent rainstorms in late summer,
is a vita! source of water for Arizona. The streams and
underground basins fed by the Coconino provide domestic
water supplies for Flagstaff, Winslow, and in part for the
Phoenix-Salt River Valley area through the Verde and East
Verde Rivers. The lessernorthern flowof the Coconino goes
into the Little Colorado River and thence into the Colorado
above Grand Canyon. Water in the desert is an asset beyond
price for cities, farms, power, recreation lakes, industry,
and fishing streams. Most of the water in the West comes
from the high protected watersheds of the National Forests.
You will enjoy your visit to the Coconino National F o r e s l .
Whatever your taste for recreationor natural beauty, or viewing
or using natural resources, you will be satisfied in the
Coconino. There are scenic views of red-rock canyons, solid
stands of big pine timber, deer and turkey to hunt with gun or
camera, streams and lakes with fish to catch, golden aspens
to see in the fall, ski slopes to run in winter. They are all
there for your enjoyment and economic benefit.

SAN FRANCISCO PEAKS
" N U V A T - I - K Y A N - B Y " , The original Hopi name for the
SAN FRANCISCO PEAKS, translated means "HIGH PLACES
OF THE SNOWS". Here Is the traditional home of the Kachinas,
supernatural beings who dwell on the Peaks and who come
down during the growing season to frequent the Hopi villages.
The Peaks were renamed more than three centuries ago by
the Or alb i Franciscans in honor of their patron saint.
Of the four peaks, Humphrey's Peak is the highest, being
named for railroad surveyor and Army Engineer, Andrew
Atkinson Humphrey (1810-83). Its elevation Is 12,670 feet.
Next is Agasslz Peak, 12,340 feet, named for Jean Louis
Rudolphe Agasslz *1817-73), a French geologist and zoologist.
Fremont's Peak, 11,940 feet, is named for John
Charles Fremont (1813-90), governor of Arizona Territory
1878-82. Doyle Peak, 9,000 feet is named for a cattleman,
Allen Doyle (1850-1920).
These San Francisco Peaks are remnants of an ancient
volcano that may have reached 15,000 feet during Its greatest
activity. Erosion has cut It to its present size and shape.
New geological studies show that the glaclation of the
Peaks was both more extensive and more active over the last
one million years than supposed. Seven distinct stages of
glaclation have been found, the earliest dates back to about
one million years ago and the latest occurring within the last
1,000 years. The earliest glacier, believed to represent the
s o - c a l l e d Illinoian glaclation, third of the four major ice
sheets that swept down Into the United States during the Ice
Age, was the most extensive. Through recent geologic time,
the Peaks were alternately hot and cold and apparently sometimes
hot and cold at the same time.
Above the tlmberline are lichens and mosses clinging to
rocks amid howling Arctic-Alpine blizzards. In the top band
of trees are Hudsonian Foxtail Pine and Englemann Spruce.
Next below is the Canadian Zone of Douglas and White Firs
and quaking Aspen. Nearer the foot of the mountain Ponderosa
Pine grows abundantly, thus giving this area one of the World's
largest stands of Ponderosa Pine trees.
The Arizona Snow Bowl is located on Mt. Agasslz and
provides recreation for many ski enthusiasts during the winter.
During the summer vacationers enjoy a ski lift ride to the top
of the Mountain, catching a glimpse of portions of California,
Nevada, Utah, and sometimes Colorado and New Mexico.
COCQNINQ COUNTY
Hopi Pronunciation: KI-HO-NI-NO
English Pronunciation: KO-KO-NE-NO
Hopi word, meaning uneducated or childlike in a religious
sense.
COCONINO COUNTY Is the second largest county in the
United States having 18,573 square miles. Flagstaff is the
county seat situated at an altitude of 7,000 feet. Towering
above the city are the San Francisco Peaks which rise to a
height of 12,670 feet and are snow-capped during much of the
year. This is the home of the Arizona Snow Bowl, a fine ski
area. Also, the home of the Kachinas. According to the
Pueblo Indian legends, these are supernatural beings who
dwell in the Peaks.
One mile west of the city is the Lowell Observatory,
world renowned for its astronomical achievement, including
the discovery of Planet Pluto in 1930. The Pioneer Historical
Museum is located two miles north on Hwy. 180. This old
two-story, tuffa rock building, houses a fine collection of
Flagstaff's and the Northland's early history. One mile
further on Hwy. 180 is the Museum of Northern Arizona which
offers an introduction to the geology, biology and antropology
of Northern Arizona.
Located within Coconino County are four National Monuments.
The Grand Canyon, one of the seven wonders of the
world, Sunset Crater which is dominated by a massive 1,000
foot high volcanic cinder cone. Wupatki National Monument,
remains of 12th-century pueblos, prehistoric ruins and colorful
remains of an Indian "Land-Rush" that resulted from the
eruption of nearby Sunset Crater; and Walnut Canyon National
Monument approximately 400 feet deep with remains of some
300 small prehistoric cliff dwellings of the 13th century cliff
dwellers.
To the west of Flagstaff 28 miles, and in Coconino County,
is the picturesque town of Williams, headquarters for the
Kaibab National Forest and noted for its B i l l Williams Mountain
Men. To the south 18 miles Is Oak Creek Canyon, sometimes
called Red Rock Country. Nestled at the foot of this canyon
is the small, unique town of Sedona. Traveling toward the
north is the newest town in Arizona, Page, site of the Glen
Canyon Dam built across the Colorado River, and the Glen
Canyon Bridge, highest of its kind In the world. The new Glen
Canyon Recreation Area offers some of the finest fishing to
be had. Northeast of Flagstaff are the Navajo and Hopi Reservations
while, nestled at the bottom of the Grand Canyon lives
the carefree Havasupai Indian Tribe.
The extensive Ponderosa Pine forests (one of the world's
two largest) surrounds the community and the vast 1,800,000
Coconino National Forest, with headquarters in Flagstaff,
lies in Coconino County. This has been the key to the City's
growing lumber industry, for which Coconino County is mainly
noted along with the fine summer and winter cattle range and
Its unparalleled tourist attractions.

A number in tlie top line (19) multiplied by a number in the last column on the left (18) produces the number where
the top line and the side line meet (342) and so on throughout the table.
A number in tiie table (342) divided by the number at the top of that column (19) results in the number (18) at the
extreme left; also, a number in the table (342) divided by the number (18) at the extreme left gives the number (19) at
the top of the column and so on throughout the table.

ANIMAL BITES - Wounds should be washed with soap under running water and animal should be
caught alive for rabies test. Call doctor or take patient to him.
ASPHYXIAT'ON - Start mouth-to-mouth resuscitation immediately after getting patient to fresh
air. Call j-nysician.
BLEEDING - Press hard on wound with sterile compress until bleeding stops. Send for doctor if it
is severe.
BURNS - If mild, with skin unbroken and no blisters, plunge into ice water until pain subsides.
Apply mild burn ointment or petroleum jelly if pain persists. Send for physician if burn is severe.
Apply sterile compresses and keep patient quiet and comfortably warm until doctor's arrival. Do
not try to clean burn, or to break blisters.
CHEMICALS IN E Y E - With patient lying down, pour cupfuls of water immediately into corner of
eye, letting it run to other side to remove chemicals thoroughly. Cover with sterile compress and
call doctor.
CHOKING - Give the cough reflex time to work. Back slapping or reaching into the mouth with
a finger may force the object down into the windpipe. Cough spasms usually expel the foreign
body. But if choking continues and the victim turns increasingly blue, slap the back between trie
shoulder blades. Do this only as a l2st resort. Start mouth-to-mouth resuscitation if breathing
stops. Send for a physician and rush the patient to the hospital.
CONVULSIONS - P lace person on back on bed or rug so he can't hurt himself. Loosen clothing.
Turn head to side. Put thick wad of cloth between jaws so patient can't bite tongue. Raise and f>ull lower jaw forward. Sponge head and neck with cool water if convulsions do not stop. Send
or physician.
CUTS (MINOR) - Apply mild antiseptic and sterile compress after washing with soap under warm
running water.
ELECTRIC SHOCK - If possible, turn off power. Don't touch victim until contact is broken; pull
him from contact wiih rope, wooden pole, or loop of dry cloth. Start artificial respiration if
breathing has stopped. Send for doctor.
FOREIGN BODY IN E Y E - Touch object with moistened corner of handkerchief it it can be seen.
If it cannot be seen or does not come out after a few attempts, take patient to doctor. Do not rub
eye, since this may force item in deeper.
FAINTING - Seat patient and fan his face if he feels faint. Lower head to knees. Lav him down
with head turned to side if he becomes unconscious. Loosen clothing and open windows. Wave
aromatic spirits of ammonia or smelling salts under nose. Keep patient lying quietly for at least 15
minutes after he regains consciousness. Call doctor if faint lasts for more than a few minutes.
FALLS - Send for physician if patient has continued pain. Cover wound with sterile dressing and
stop any severe bleeding. Do not move patient unless absolutely necessary-as in case of fire-if broken
bone is suspected. Keep patient warm and comfortable.
POISONING - Call doctor. Use antidote listed on label if container is found. Except for lye, other
caustics and petroleum products, induce vomiting if victim is unconscious. Give milk if poison or
antidote is unknown.
SHOCK (INJURY-RELATED) - Keep the victim lying down, if uncertain as to his injuries, keep the
victim flat on his back. Maintain the victim's normal body temperature; if the weather is cold or
damp, place blankets or extra clothing over and under the victim; if weather is hot, provide shade.
Get medical care as soon as possible.
STINGS FROM INSECTS - If possible, remove stinger and apply solution of ammonia and watn, or
paste of baking soda. Call physician immediately if body swells or patient collapses. Prevent allergic
recurrence of severe reaction via desensitization treatment from doctor.
UNCONSCIOUSNESS - Send for doctor and place person on stomach with his head turned to side.
Start resuscitation if he stops breathing and never give food or liquids to an unconscious person.

M O U T H T O M O U T H R E S P I R A T I O N
Stressing that your breath can save a life, the American Red Cross gives the following directions
for mouth-to-mouth resuscitation if the victim is not breathing:
• Turn victim on his back and begin artificial respiration at once.
• Wipe out quickly any foreign matter visible in the mouth, using your fingers or a cloth wrapped
around your fingers.
• Tilt victim's head back.
• Pull or push jaw into jutting-out position.
• If victim is a small child, place your mouth tightly over his mouth and nose and blow gently into
his lungs about 20 times a minute. If victim is adult, cover the mouth with the mouth, pinch his
nostrils shut, and blow vigorously about 12 times a minute.
• If unable to get air into lungs of victim, and if head and jaw positions are correct, suspect foreign
matter in throat. To remove it, suspend a small child momentarily by the ankles or hold child
with head down for a moment and slap sharply between shoulder blades.
• If victim is an adult, turn him on his side and use same procedure.
• Again, wipe mouth to remove foreign matter.
• Repeat breathing, removing mouth each time to allow for escape of air. Continue until victim
breathes for himself.
