"finest". We realize however that some errors
and omissions are inevitable and eamestty
request that these be brought to our
attention by calling (303) 667-0652. These
errors and omissions will be corrected in the
next edition of the di rectory. It is only through
the interest of the subscribers and users of
the directory that each new edition can
surpass the last
In the public interest the use of this directory
for any other purpose than as a reference

directory is expressly prohibited without
written permission from the publisher.
In 1932, a young lawyer fresh from Marquette
University decided to publish a book. This
was not an ordinary book, but a list of people,
their families, occupations and other vital
information — a city directory. 1932 was
hardly the time to begin, but people and
businesses needed this important
information then, just as they do now.
Ken Erion started Johnson Publishing
Company that year, and guided its growth on
1 6 4 0 5 6
sound business principles and belief in a
quality product designed to service his
customers. Now, more than fifty years later,
Johnson Publishing Company and its
aftWates are stiH doing what Ken Erion
initiated in 1932.
From one small city directory in Wisconsin.
Johnson Publishing has grown to serve over
20TXcoinrnunities across the United States
with quality, accurate directories.
New products, enrumcements of service
and our rigorous comrnitrnent to place

Flagstaff, Arizona
Flagstaff, Arizona, at 7,000 feet
elevation, is truly the "CITY IN
THE PINES." The extensive
ponderosa pine forests which
surround the community have
been the key to its development
into the leading commercial and
travel center of Northern
Arizona.
The first settler was Edward
Whipple, who operated a saloon
near the Flagstaff spring in 1871.
The second white man was F. F.
McMillan, who settled north of
the present Flagstaff.
The name "Flagstaff" comes
from a pinetree being stripped of
its branches to serve as a
"flagstaff" for flying the American
flag on the 100th anniversary of
Independence Day, July 4, 1876.
This "flagstaff" was said to be
near where the Texaco tanks and
the railroad tracks just south of
Highway 66 are now. Highway
66 across Northern Arizona was
used for many years as a wagon
train route to California, and the
site of the "flagstaff" was a
popular camping area. The
"flagstaff" stood for many years
to guide other parties along the
trail.
The lumber industry had its
start from an early sawmill built
in 1882. This mill was established
to furnish ties for the Atlantic &
Pacific Railroad which was
extended to Flagstaff that year.
The Atlantic & Pacific
subsequently became the Santa
Fe's main transcontinental line
through Arizona. At present,
timber being harvested on a
sustained yield basis supports an
active wood products industry.
Plagued by fires in its early
history, Flagstaff was destroyed
in 1884 and again in 1886. By
1891, Flagstaff was made county
seat of the newly formed
Coconino County, but it was not
until May 26, 1894 that the city
was incorporated. That same
year, world-famous Lowell
Observatory was located on
Mars Hill inside the west city
limits. Arizona State College
began its first college session in
the autumn of 1899. The college
became a fully accredited
university in May 1966, and is
now called Northern Arizona
University. In 1908 the Coconino
National Forest was created with
headquarters in Flagstaff and the
first forest experimental station
was established at Fort Valley,
nine miles northwest of the city.
The museum of Northern
Arizona was founded by Dr.
Harold S. Colton in 1928. That
same year saw the start of the
annual Southwest Ail-Indian Pow
Wow. Organized snow sports
began in 1940 at the Arizona
Snow Bowl on the 12,340 foot
Mt. Agissiz, second highest of
the San Francisco Peaks.
Flagstaff is governed by
statute. Six councilmembers and
m
p r o f i l e c o n t i n u ed
the mayor are elected. Also, a
city manager is appointed. The
Municipal Airport, The Federal
Housing Development, and the
Public Library are under the city
administration. There is a city
building code and zone
restrictions.
The city is noted for its long
list of special events,
conventions, Forest Service
campgrounds, and areas of
vacation appeal. It is also called
"The City of Seven Wonders,"
noted by the following: Grand
Canyon, Wupatki, Sunset Crater,
Walnut Canyon, Oak Creek
Canyon, Meteor Crater, and the
San Francisco Peaks.
COCONINO COUNTY:
Hopi Pronunciation:
KI-HO-NI-HO.
English Pronunciation:
KO-KO-NE-NO.
Hopi word, meaning uneducated
or childlike in a religious sense.
Coconino County is the
second largest county in the
United States having 18,573
square miles. Flagstaff is the
county seat situated at an
altitude of 7,000 feet. Towering
above the city are the San
Francisco Peaks which rise to a
height of 12,670 feet and are
snowcapped during much of the
year. This is the home of the
Arizona Snow Bowl, a fine ski
area. Also, the home of the
Kachinas. According to the
Pueblo Indian legends, these are
supernatural beings who dwell in
the Peaks.
One mile west of the city is
the Lowell Observatory, world
renowned for its astronomical
achievement, including the
IV
discovery of the Planet Pluto in
1930. The Pioneer Historical
Museum is located two miles
north on Highway 180. This old
two-story, tuffarock building
houses a fine collection of
Flagstaff's and the Northland's
early history. One mile further
on Highway 180 is the Museum
of Northern Arizona which offers
an introduction to the geology,
biology and anthropology of
Northern Arizona.
Located within Coconino
County are four national
monuments. The Grand Canyon,
one of the seven wonders of the
world, Sunset Crater which is
dominated by a massive 1,000
foot high volcanic cinder cone,
Wupatki National Monument,
with remains of 12th-century
pueblos, prehistoric ruins and
colorful remains of an Indian
"Land-Rush" that resulted from
the eruption of nearby Sunset
Crater; and Walnut Canyon
National Monument,
approximately 400 feet deep
with remains of some 300 small
prehistoric cliff dwellings of the
13th century cliff dwellers.
To the west of Flagstaff, 28
miles, and in Coconino County,
is the picturesque town of
Williams, headquarters for the
Kaibab National Forest and
noted for its Bill Williams
Mountain Men. To the south, 18
miles, is Oak Creek Canyon,
sometimes called Red Rock
Country. Nestled at the foot of
this canyon is the small, unique
town of Sedona. Traveling
toward the north is the newest
town in Arizona, Page, site of the
Glen Canyon Dam built across
the Colorado River, and the
Glen Canyon Bridge, highest of
its kind in the world. Glen
Canyon Recreation Area offers
some of the finest fishing to be
had. Northeast of Flagstaff are
the Navajo and Hopi
Reservations while, nestled at
the bottom of the Grand Canyon
lives the carefree Havasupai
Indian Tribe.
The extensive ponderosa pine
forests (one of the world's two
largest) surrounds the
community and the vast
1,800,000 acre Coconino
National Forest, with
headquarters in Flagstaff, lies in
Coconino County. This has been
the key to the city's growing
lumber industry, for which
Coconino County is mainly
noted along with the fine
summer and winter cattle range
and its unparalleled tourist
attractions.
COCONINO NATIONAL
FOREST
The Coconino National Forest
consists of 1,800,000 acres of
magnificent ponderosa pine
timoer and productive grazing
land, beautiful mountain lakes,
deep canyons cut through
colorful rock formations,
snow-capped peaks, and
recreation land second to none.
This land of many uses is
administered by the U. S.
Department of Agriculture's
Forest Service. Forest rangers
direct the management and
development of national forest
outdoor recreation, range,
timber, watershed, wildlife, and
fish under the Multiple
Use-Sustained Yield Act of 1960,
which declared that these
resources were to be used in
combinations that best meet the
needs of the American people.
The Coconino National Forest,
with headquarters situated in
Flagstaff, stretches from desert
and irrigation country below
Camp Verde to the Mogollon
Rim, to the San Francisco
Mountains with their icy 12,000
foot volcanic cones, and from
the wildly beautiful Sycamore
Canyon country on the west to
the cool tall-timbered lake
country east of Mormon Lake.
Much of Coconino lies on the
Colorado Plateau, which is part
of the great geologic uplift
through which the Colorado
River has cut its path. The forest
occupies a section of the plateau
that is an irregular tableland of
pine forest 75 miles long and 25
miles wide. Here are stands of
commercial timber valued at
$50,000,000, supporting an
important logging and lumber
economy in Northern Arizona.
Elk, antelope, and mule deer
attract hunters, wildlife
photographers, and thousands of
other interested Americans. Here
grace most of the 35,000 sheep
and cattle which use Coconino
National Forest range, producing
beef and wool for a growing
America.
The Coconino National Forest,
with several feet of snow on the
plateau in winter and frequent
rainstorms in late summer, is a
vital source of water for Arizona.
The streams and underground
basins fed by the Coconino
provide domestic water supplies
for Flagstaff, Winslow, and in
part for the Phoenix-Salt River
Valley area through the Verde
and East Verde Rivers. The lesser
northern flow of the Coconino
goes into the Little Colorado
River and then into the Colorado
above Grand Canyon. Water in
the desert is an asset beyond
price for cities, farms, power,
recreation lakes, industry, and
fishing streams. Most of the
water in the West comes from
the high protected watersheds of
the national forests.
You will enjoy your visit to the
Coconino National Forest.
Whatever your taste for
recreation or natural beauty
is-viewing or using natural
resources-you will be satisfied in
the Coconino. There are scenic
views of red-rock canyons, solid
stands of big pine timber, deer
and turkey to hunt with gun or
camera, streams and lakes with
fish to catch, golden aspens to
see in the fall, ski slopes to run
in winter. They are all there for
your enjoyment and benefit.
SAN FRANCISCO PEAKS
"NUVAT-I-KYAN-BY," the
original Hopi name for the SAN
FRANCISCO PEAKS, translated
means "HIGH PLACES OF THE
SNOWS." Here is the traditional
home of the Kachinas,
supernatural beings who dwell
on the Peaks and who come
down during the growing season
to frequent the Hopi villages.
The Peaks were renamed more
than three centuries ago by the
Oraibi Franciscans in honor of
their patron saint.
Of the four peaks, Humphrey's
Peak is the highest, being named
for railroad surveyor and army
engineer, Andrew Atkinson
Humphrey (1810-83). Its
elevation is 12,670 feet. Next to
it is Agissiz Peak, 12,340 feet,
named for Jean Louis Rudolphe
Agissiz (1817-73), a French
geologist and zoologist.
Fremont's Peak, 11,940 feet, is
named for John Charles Fremont
(1813-90), governor of Arizona
Territory (1878-82). Doyle Peak,
9,000 feet is named for
cattleman, Allen Doyle
(1850-1920).
These San Francisco Peaks are
remnants of an ancient volcano
that may have reached 15,000
p r o f i l e c o n t i n u e d
d e m o g r a p h i c s
feet during its greatest activity.
Erosion has cut it to its present
size and shape.
New geological studies show
that the glaciation of the peaks
was both more extensive and
more active over the last one
million years than supposed.
Seven distinct stages of
glaciation have been found, the
earliest dates back to about one
million years ago and the latest
occurring within the last 1,000
years. The earliest glacier,
believed to represent the
so-called lllinoian glaciation,
third of the four major ice sheets
that swept into the United States
during the Ice Age, was the most
extensive. Through recent
geologic time, the peaks were
alternately hot and cold and
apparently sometimes hot and
cold at the same time.
Above the timberline are
lichens and mosses clinging to
rocks amid howling arctic-alpine
blizzards. In the top band of
trees are Hudsonian foxtail pine
and Englemann spruce. Next
below is the Canadian zone of
douglas and white firs and
quaking aspen. Nearer the foot
of the mountain ponderosa pine
grows abundantly, thus giving
this area one of the world's
largest stands of ponderosa pine
trees.
The Arizona Snow Bowl is
located on Mt. Agissiz and
provides recreation for many ski
enthusiasts during the winter.
During the summer, vacationers
enjoy a ski lift ride to the top of
the mountain, catching a glimpse
of portions of California, Nevada,
Utah, and sometimes Colorado
and New Mexico.

ARIZONA SNOW BOWL:
The chair-lift will take you up the
highest peak in the state, to an
elevation of 11,200 feet. Enjoy
the ride as a winter skier or a
summer enthusiast. The
unequaled view displays
Arizona's finest scenery,
including the Grand Canyon.
BEDROCK CITY:
Everyone loves Fred and Barney!
You'll enjoy pictures of your
loved ones with this prehistoric
pair. A memorable part of your
trip on the way to the Grand
Canyon.
DEER FARM:
You don't just look at the deer,
you walk among them, touch
them, let them eat right from
your hand. Children of all ages
have a great time with the pigmy
goats, llamas, kangaroos,
monkeys, miniature donkeys,
peacocks and many others.
Located 25 beautiful miles west
of Flagstaff on I-40. Summer
hours - 8 a.m. to dusk, rest of
the year 9 a.m. to dusk (subject
to weather). Closed February
and on Tuesday during winter
months.
GRAND CANYON:
Not only one of Flagstaff's seven
wonders, but one of the seven
wonders of the world. Every hue
of the rainbow can be seen in
the mile-deep gorge, and the
sunsets are an attraction in
themselves. While at the South
Rim, see the historic hotels, the
Bright Angel lodge and the El
Tovar, and take time to browse
around the village. Then journey
to the North Rim to absorb the
splendor from another angle.
METEOR CRATER:
An astounding 4,150 feet from
rim to rim, three miles in
circumference, 570 feet deep,
this is the best-preserved
meteoritic crater on earth, and is
used as a training site for U.S.
astronauts. The Museum of
Astrology and the Astronats
Hall of Fame allows you to see
space as it really is. It's an
exciting treat for visitors of any
age.
MONTEZUMA CASTLE:
Named for the ancient Aztec
ruler, Montezuma, these ruins
are actually the work of the
Sinagua Indians. Virtually
untouched by time, the ancient
apartment house is 50 miles
south of Flagstaff and believed to
have been built around A.D.
1100.
OAK CREEK CANYON:
Wind your way down the
switchbacks of the Grand
Canyon of tomorrow. Colorful
sandstone formations line the
highway and the creek
accompanies you with every
turn. Oak Creek teems with
trout, and photography buffs will
also feel in their element, as
every crevice offers another
picture. From the craggy cliffs to
the smooth stone of Slide Rock,
Oak Creek is appealing to
anyone who loves the outdoors.
PETRIFIED FOREST/PAINTED
DESERT:
The largest find of petrified
wood in the world, the Petrified
Forest is an attraction you won't
want to miss. Logs ranging from
250 feet to inch-long pieces are
remains of a 160-million-year-old
forest. The Painted Desert, part
of the Petrified Forest, is one of
Arizona's most spectacular
attractions, with every hue in the
rainbow laced through the land.
SAN FRANCISCO PEAKS:
Enjoy hiking and picnicking in
alpine forests. Cool and bright in
summer, sparkling with golden
aspens in fall, stately under
winter snows, the Peaks are
refreshing in any season.
SUNSET CRATER:
The sun sets eternally at Sunset
Crater, when the striding hues
became a permanent part of its
beauty during the volcanic
eruptions that formed it 900
years ago. The crater's unique
coloring comes from minerals
that were deposited around the
rim by volcanic vapor; the
minerals stained the cinders and
continue to make this
remarkable summit glow at any
time.
TUZIGOOT:
These ruins hang from the side
of a hill, a honeycomb of crude
masonry walls. Built between
A.D. 1125 and A.D. 1400,
Tuzigoot and the lush Verde
Valley were later abandoned, the
reason is still a mystery.
WALNUT CANYON:
Open 365 days a year, Walnut
Canyon is the site of cleverly
sheltered cliff dwellings of the
Sinagua Indians. Overhanging
ledges of limestone conceal the
remains of the ancient Indian
homes, and the lush canyon
makes it a homesite anyone
would envy.

Lack of advertising
beneficial to some!
When Mark Twain was a
young man, he was editor and
publisher of a growing newspaper
in a small Missouri town. One day
he received a letter from one of
his subscribers. The subscriber
said that he had found a spider
in that morning's edition of his
paper. He wanted to know if this
was an omen of good luck, or of
bad luck. Mark Twain, a hustling
space salesman as well as an
editor, wrote to his customer.
A c t n o w ! A r r a n g e f o r y o u r A d
t o a p p e a r i n o u r n e x t e d i t i o n .
Dear Sir
Finding the spider in your newspaper
yesterday morning was
neither good luck or bad luck for
you The spider was merely looking
over our paper to see which of
the town's merchants is not advertising.
He will then go to that
store, spin his web across the
door, and lead a life of undisturbed
peace ever afterward

But, if by any chance they are not, you'll
do us a favor by telephoning or writing
our business office.
We'll correct our records promptly so it
will appear the way it should in the next
issue.
