present the 1988 edition of the Flagstaff,
Arizona City Directory.
It has always been our policy to provide
accurate and comprehensive directory
service to those cc<nmunrties that desire
the "finest". We realize however that some
errors and omissions are inevitable and
earnestly request that these be brought to
our attention by cafcng (303) 667-0652.
These errors and omissions wM be
corrected in the next edition of the
directory. It is only through the interest of
the subscribers and users of the directory
that each new edition can surpass the last.
In the public interest the use of this
directory for any other purpose than as a
reference volume or reproduction of any
part of this directory is expressly prohibited
without written permission from the
publisher.
In 1932, a young lawyer fresh from
Marquette University decided to publish a
book. This was not an ordinary book, but a
list of people, their families, occupations
and other vital information — a city
directory. 1932 was hardly the time to
begin, but people and businesses needed
this important information then, just as they
do now. Ken Enon started Johnson
Publishing Company that year, and guided
its growth on sound business principles
and belief in a quality product designed to
service his customers. Now, more than fifty
years later, Johnson Orectohes and its
affiliates are sttf doing what Ken Erion
initiated in 1932.
Johnson Directories, a division of U S
WEST Marketing Resources, has enjoyed
its share of growth. Starting with one smal
city directory in Wisconsin, it now pubishes
500 quality, accurate directories which
serve nearly 2,000 corrrrHjnrtJes across the
nation.

FLAGSTAFF
The "hub of scenic northern
Arizona" was named on
Independence Day, July 4, 1876.
A centennial flag was flown from
atop a pine chosen for its height.
This legendary pine stood as a
guide for the wagon trains
traveling to California; the trail
later became U.S. Highway 66.
Flagstaff became a town in 1894,
a city in 1928, and has been the
seat of Coconino County since
its establishment in 1891. With
an area of 11,886,720 acres,
Coconino is the second largest
county in the United Slates,
population, 90,000.
As the central city in an area
of natural beauty and historic
relevance, Flagstaff, often called
the "city of seven wonders,"
referring to nearby 1) Grand
Canyon, 2) Wupatki, 3) Sunset
Crater, 4) Walnut Canyon, 5)
Oak Creek Canyon, 6) Meteor
Crater, and 7) the San Francisco
Peaks at an elevation of 7,000
feet, is a city of great appeal to
vacationers, campers, and
conventioneers.
With a population of 41,000,
Flagstaff maintains twelve
elementary and two high
schools, five private schools, and
is the home of the Northern
Arizona University, consisting of
nine colleges, and boasts the
N.A.U. Skydome, an
eight-million-dollar sports
facility.

the Flagstaff Symphony
Orchestra, the Flagstaff Art Barn,
Pioneers' Historical Museum,
N.A.U. Art Gallery, the Festival of
the Arts, the Arizona Snow Bowl,
two libraries, three recreation
centers, thirteen parks, two
pools, one golf course, twelve
tennis courts, one ice skating
rink, two ski runs, two sled runs,
one skeet and trap facility, two
bowling alleys and six indoor
theaters.
Also available are fourteen
financial institutions, both rail
and air transportation, one
weekly newspaper and two daily
newspapers, six local radio
stations and two local television
stations, one hospital, three
Catholic churches, six Churches
of Latter Day Saints and over 50
churches of varying Protestant
denominations.
Precipitation averages 1.65
inches per month, heaviest in
July, August, and December,
and minimal in May and June
(annual average: 84.4 inches).
High temperatures range from
the mid 70s to low 80s in the
summer to the mid 40s during
winter months. Overnight low
temperatures range from the
mid-teens in winter to 50
degrees in the summer. (Average
high temperature 60.8°—average
low temperature 30°).

Not only one of Flagstaff's
seven wonders, but one of the
seven wonders of the world.
Every hue of the rainbow can be
seen in the mile-deep gorge, and
the sunsets are an attraction in
themselves. While at the South
Rim, see the historic hotels, the
Bright Angel Lodge and the El
Tovar, and take time to browse
around the Village. Then journey
to the North Rim to absorb the
splendor from another angle.
BEDROCK CITY
Everyone loves Fred and
Barney! You'll enjoy pictures of
your loved ones with this
prehistoric pair. A memorable
part of your trip on the way to
the Grand Canyon.
FAIRFIELD
SNOW BOWL
The chair-lift will take you up
the highest peak in the state, to
an elevation of 11,2000 feet.
Enjoy the ride as a winter skier
or a summer enthusiast. The
unequaled view displays
Arizona's finest scenery,
including the Grand Canyon.
The Snow Bowl also offers a
snack bar, open year round.
SAN FRANCISCO PEAKS
Enjoy hiking and picnicking in
alpine forests. Cool and bright in
summer, sparkling with golden
aspens in fall, stately under
winter snows, Ihe Peaks are
refreshing in any season.
DEER FARM
You don't just look at the
deer, you walk among them, you
touch them, you let them eat
right from your hand. Children
of all ages have a great lime with
the pigmy goats, llamas,
kangaroos, monkeys, miniature
donkeys, peacocks and many
others. Located 25 beautiful
miles west of Flagstaff on I-40.
Summer hours—8 a.m. to dusk.
Check with the Chamber of
Commerce for winter hours.
TUZIGOOT
These ruins hang from the side
of a hill, a honeycomb of crude
masonry walls. Built between
A.D. 1125 and A.D. 1400,
Tuzigoot and the lush Verde
Valley were later abandoned, the
reason still a mystery. This
national monument is only 54
miles from Flagstaff.
WUPATKI
The Hopi word for "tall
house," Wupatki is a ihree-story
Indian ruin. The Wupatki basin
was once fertile farmland that
harbored a melting pot of
prehistoric Indians; the
population was between 250 and
300 people. Now only these
enduring dwellings remain as
evidence of a once proud
culture.
OAK CREEK CANYON
Wind your way down the
switchbacks of the Grand
Canyon of tomorrow. Colorful
sandstone formations line the
highway and the creek
accompanies you with every
turn. Oak Creek teems with
trout, and photography buffs will
also feel in their element, as
every crevice offers another
picture. Frorii the craggy cliffs to
the smooth stone of Slide Rock,
Oak Creek is appealing to
anyone who loves the outdoors.

SUNSET CRATER
The sun sets eternally at
Sunset Crater, when the striking
hues became a permanent part
of its beauty during the volcanic
eruptions that formed it 900
years ago. The crater's unique
coloring comes from minerals
that were deposited around the
rim by volcanic vapor; the
minerals stained the cinders and
continue to make this
remarkable summit glow at any
time.
PETRIFIED FOREST/
PAINTED DESERT
The largest find of petrified
wood in the world, the Petrified
Forest is an attraction you won't
want to miss. Logs ranging from
250 feet to inch-long pieces are
remains of a 160-miliion-year-old
forest. The Painted Desert, part
of the Petrified Forest, is one of
Arizona's most spectacular
attractions, with every hue in the
rainbow laced through the land.
METEOR CRATER
An astounding 4,150 feet from
rim to rim, three miles in
circumference, and 570 feet
deep, this is the best-preserved
meteorite crater on Earth, and
was used as the training site for
U.S. astronauts. The Museum of
Astrogeology and the Astronauts
Hall of Fame allows you to see
space as it really is. It's an
exciting educational experience
for visitors of all ages.
WALNUT CANYON
Open 365 days a year, Walnut
Canyon is the site of cleverly
sheltered cliff dwellings of the
Sinagua Indians. Overhanging
ledges of limestone conceal the
remains of the ancient Indian
homes, and the tush canyon
makes it a homesite anyone
would envy.
MONTEZUMA CASTLE
Named for the ancient Aztec
ruler, Montezuma, these ruins
are actually the work of the
Sinagua Indians. Virtually
untouched by time, the ancient
apartment house is 50 miles
south of Flagstaff and believed to
have been built around A.D.
1100.
