Faculty Accolades
GCC's faculty is known for teaching excellence. Here are a few recent honors.
Dr. Ruth Callahan was the co-director and lead faculty in the District-sponsored Global
Engagement Faculty Development Program in the Czech Republic.
Lenna DeMarco and Dr. Phong Chau received Maricopa Center for Learning and
Instruction (MCLI) Grants.
Claire Englehart spent last summer at Indiana University of Pennsylvania to begin work
on her doctorate in literary criticism.
Annette Fisher, Dr. "ennifer Lane and Dr. Kim Smith won Excellence in Teaching
awards from the National Institute for Staff &Organizational Development.
Annette Fisher, Dr. Aleksander Radisich and Richard Shortridge attended a
Master Teacher Seminar at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
"ohn Gibson attended the Global Engagement Faculty Development Program.
"ulie Gray was certified as a "Developmental Education Specialist" through Appalachian
State University.
Dr. B.... "acobs published a book titled WillI Ever See You Again? Attachment Challenges
for Foster Children: A Primer for the Adults in Their Lives.
Dr. Carol "enkins won the prestigious Cross Papers Fellowship for 2008-2009 from the
League for Innovation in the Community College.
Dr. "ennifer Lane received an MCCCD Diversity Advisory Council Award of Excellence for
her role in "Serve, Learn, Inspire, Change and Educate" (SLICE).
Ui Luu participated in a faculty development opportunity through the High Tech Workforce
Initiative of the National Science Foundation.
"ohnnie May began an MFA in poetry at Pacific University in Oregon-one of only 10
students admitted from more than 100 applicants.
Dr. ..eff Pommerville received the de Villiers Golden Microscope Award from the
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for donating 1 percent of the royalties from his text
Fundamentals of Microbiology: A Body Systems Approach.
Debbie Pool is co-author of the textbook Evidence-Based Nursing Care Guidelines:
Medical-Surgical Interventions, named by the American Journal of Nursing as AJN Book of
the Year in the Medical-Surgical Nursing category.
Kirt Shineman wrote an original play, Cloning Peter, which was selected and performed
in Prescott by a theater group called "Tomorrow's Theater Tonight."
Dr. Kim Smith and Dr. Debbie Leedy presented papers on GCC curriculum changes at
a Chemical Education conference at Indiana University.
Dr. Laura Watkins received a grant to attend the International Congress on Mathematical
Education in Monterrey, Mexico.

History of the Academic Costume
The present-day academic costume
seemingly originated at Oxford and
Cambridge Universities in the
1300s. As the universities passed
from ecclesiastical control, brighter
colors distinguished the academic
robe from the drab clerical gown.
Colonial American universities
based their academic regalia on the
British system.
In 1893, an intercollegiate
commission established a uniform
code for caps, gowns and hoods for
the various degrees.
Black tassels are correct for all
degrees, and colored tassels are
worn only by preference. The
doctor's cap and president's of
universities or colleges may have__
tassels of gold thread. The tassel
should be worn draped over the left
front quarter of the cap.
The usual color for academic gowns
in the United States is black. The
bachelor's gown is worn closed; the
master's and doctor's may be worn
open or closed. The shape of the
sleeve is the distinguishing mark of
the gowns; bachelor, long pointed
sleeves; master, oblong sleeves
open at the wrist; doctor, bellshaped
with three velvet bars on
each sleeve.
Of the costume's three components,
the hood is the most interesting.
Originally it had three uses: as a
head covering, as a shoulder cape,
and as a bag in which alms could be
collected. It is mentioned as early as
1480 in clerical literature. When
large wigs were in vogue in Britain,
the cape part of the hood was split in
front and a narrow neckband
inserted. The entire cape and hood
was allowed to fall back as it is
today, and it was never restored to
the original style.
The hoods are lined with the color
of the institution which awarded the
degree to the wearer. The color of
the border or collar of the hood
designates the degree.
