ACADEMIC REGALIA
The present-day academic costume seemingly originated at Oxford and
Cambridge Universities in the 1300s. As the universities passed from
ecclesiastical control, brighter colors distinguished the academic robe
from the drab clerical gown. Colonial American universities based their
academic regalia on the British system.
In 1893, an intercollegiate commission established a uniform code for
caps, gowns and hoods for the various degrees.
Black tassels are correct for all degrees, and colored tassels are worn
only by preference. The doctor's cap and president's of universities or
colleges may have tassels of gold thread. The tassel should be worn
draped over the left front quarter of the cap.
The usual color for academic gowns in the United States is black. The
bachelor's gown is worn closed; the master's and doctor's may be worn
open or closed. The shape of the sleeve is the distinguishing mark of
the gowns; bachelor, long pointed sleeves; master, oblong sleeves open
at the wrist; doctor, bell-shaped with three velvet bars on each sleeve.
Of the costume's three components, the hood is the most interesting.
Originally it had three uses: as a head covering, as a shoulder cape,
and as a bag in which alms could be collected. It is mentioned as early
as 1480 in clerical literature. When large wigs were in vogue in Britain,
the cape part of the hood was split in front and a narrow neckband
inserted. The entire cape and hood was allowed to fall back as it is
today, and it was never restored to the original style.
The hoods are lined with the color of the institution which awarded
the degree to the wearer. The color of the border or collar of the hood
designates the degree.

designated honors courses distributed among four course prefixes and
have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
Honorary Society Membership
Graduates wearing the gold PTK stole are members of Phi Theta
Kappa, Omicron Lambda Chapter. Phi Theta Kappa is the National
Honor Fraternity of the American Two Year College.
Graduates wearing the gold and blue Psi Beta cord are members of Psi
Beta Chapter of the National Psi Beta. Psi Beta is the National Honor
Society in Psychology of the American Two Year College.
Graduates wearing the gold chord and black Sigma Chi Eta pin are
members of Sigma Chi Eta, Alpha Gamma Chapter. Sigma Chi Eta is the
National Communication Fraternity of the American Two Year College.

FACULTY ACCOLADES
A photograph by Brendan Regan was selected for the cover of the
paperback edition of "Too Close to Home," a best-selling suspense novel.
Dr. Carol Jenkins introduced at the international meeting of the League
of Innovation in the Community Colleges her K. Patricia Cross endowment
paper, "Academic Integrity in a Multicultural Context: Implications for
Teaching and Learning."
Steve Kadel and Wayne Johnson won a national award from The
Videographer Awards competition for their series of three, 3.5-minute
videos called "Fire and Ice."
Thomas Jaramillo is the GCC finalist for the MCCCD 2009 Most
Distinguished Adjunct Faculty Award. Additional nominees for this award
were: Mary Beth Beattie, Corissa Bridges, Suzanne Carpenter, Janell
D'Mura, Ronald Goodwyn, Martin Mastroianni and Tracy Tauscher.
Dr. Rene Diaz-Lefebvre is the first alumnus to be inducted into the newly
created Pima Community College Hall of Fame.
Ken Bus received an MCCCD 2009 Diversity Advisory Council Award of
Excellence for planning and coordination of the 2008 "Maricopa Colleges
Global Leadership Retreat" in Prescott.
Dr. Jennifer Lane received an MCCCD 2009 Diversity Advisory Council
Award of Excellence for her participation in Serve, Learn, Inspire, Change,
Educate (SLICE).
Fran Wojculewicz was nominated for induction into the Instructor Hall of
Fame of the American Heart Association.
Sarah Bakefelt has attained Life Member status in the Ladies Professional
Golf Association.
Dr. Karen Conzelman was selected as Academy of Science Fellow at
the annual meeting of the Arizona-Nevada Academy of Science.
Dr. Renee Barstack, Dr. Guiomar Borras and Garwin Gaekel were
given Excellence in Teaching awards at the spring meeting of the National
Institute of Staff and Organizational Development.
Felicia Tutein Brenoe and Mary Harris were chosen for the Global
Engagement Faculty Curriculum Development Program: Art, Archaeology,
and History in Mexico.
"Forbidden Glass" by Kirt Shineman opened Off Broadway in New York
City. His play, "The Pornographer," was presented to an audience as part
of Phoenix Theatre's 2nd Draft Series.
Dr. James T. Abraham was one of three Full Build Challenge winners
named at the virtual SL Pro! Conference sponsored by Linden Lab and
the New Media Consortium.
GCC's 2010 Distinguished Adjunct Faculty award was given to Polly Ann
Blake. Runners-up were Christina Clark and Hilda Cabrera Coronado.
Dr. Gary Calderone co-authored an article that appeared in the summer
edition of Earthscience Education about the role geology programs at
community colleges play in preparing students for university studies.
Kris Sanford exhibited her photographic works at the Artlink A.E.
England Gallery.

STUDENT ACCOLADES
GCC'S Forensics Team won First Place among community colleges and
Fourth overall at the 2010 International Forensics Association Tournament
in Berlin, Germany. Team members are: Madison Alexander, Elizabeth
Calvert, Anna Ludlum, Michael Lugo, Bjorn Lundberg and Danielle
Saenz.
Seven students were nominated by the Kennedy Center American
College Theatre Festival for their work in "Twelve Angry Jurors." Invited
to the Regional Festival in St. George, Utah, were Austin Blindheim,
Rachel Maish, Bri Giger, Elizabeth Funk, Areli Chavez, Martin Gomez
and Estrella Cruz.
The cast of "Noises Off" won a Meritorious Achievement Award Cast
Ensemble Acting and Estrella Cruz took an Honorable Mention in
the Properties Design category at this year's regional Kennedy Center
American College Theatre Festival.
Dominic Green was listed as an Early Bird submission Winner in the
Green Arizona YouTube Video Competition sponsored by the Arizona
Environmental Strategic Alliance 2010.
The GCC Band was the first college band ever selected to perform at the
Arizona Music Educator's Association's state convention.
Salvador Ojeda earned placement on the Fall Dean's List at the
prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston.
First place in the Digital Design Challenge category at the fifth annual
Avnet Tech Games went to the team of Vladimir Frisby, John Buchanan
and Anthony Christie.
Michelle Stanfield and Angela Stokebrand were named to the 2010
All-Arizona Academic team.
Michelle Stanfield was selected as a 2010 Coca-Cola Silver Scholar.
INSTITUTIONAL ACCOLADES
The new Public Safety Sciences Building opened Jan. 14,2010. This
new, state-of-the-art facility houses the Administration of Justice, Law
Enforcement Officer Training, EMT, Paramedic and Fire Science. This
unique facility offers a shared range of technical and educational training
opportunities for first responders.
The Business Building re-opened Aug. 18, 2009. The renovations
modernized this facility with projection systems, wall talkers and a
computer infrastructure that allows for complete flexibility in the learning
environment.
The Automotive Programwas again recertified bythe NationalAutomotive
Technicians Education Foundation. Training options include three degree
programs offered in cooperation with General Motors, Ford and Chrysler.
Also available are a General Automotive Program degree path, a Modular
Accelerated Training program and individual training classes.
GCC celebrated the more than 2,500 students receiving scholarship
awards totaling $2.1 million for 2009/2010. Donations, from private
donors, foundations, corporations and civic organizations increased 10.5
percent from last year.

platform is restricted and only those participating in the commencement
ceremony may enter.

The commencement ceremony will be available on DVD. You may
order a DVD of the ceremony by paying a $10.00 fee at the Cashier's
Office. Submit the receipt to the Media Center located in the Library.
Orders will not be accepted at the commencement ceremony. DVDs
will be available after June 15, 2010 in the Media Center, Monday
through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. To 9:00 p.m.
