STATE OFFICERS - The respect that the other junior colleges of the state of Arizona hold for
Glendale Community College is indicated by the fact that the top three officers of the state
student government association are members of our institution. Terry Bloss is President;
Ron Atwood, Vice-President; and Kris Kinser, Secretary.
MASCOT - The official mascot of Glendale Community College is the GAUCHO; the official school
colors are scarlet, black, and white.
CHOIR - The choir is planning an exciting year of fun and music, such as concerts, stage shows, tours and parties. We need you!: Rehearsals are Tuesday and Thursday at 12:00 noon.
MARYLAND LIBRARY - The library hours for the Maryland Branch will be from 7:30 a.m. until
I. 3:20 p.m., Monday through Friday. Books may be checked out upon presentation of the student identification cards. Students registered at either campus have borrowing privileges at both library facilities. Further information regarding library policies may be found in the student handbook. Because the library must be used for classroom purposes, it will not be open for student use during the week of September 13-17.

LIBRARY ASSISTANTS NEEDED
Student assistants for the Maryland library are sought; applicants will be interviewed during
the afternoon of Tuesday, September 14, by Mr. Moloso in the Maryland library. Qualifications
for the positions include intelligence, attention to detail, neat appearance, and a courteous
and cooperative manner. Typing skills, although desirable, are not essential for employment.
PARKING AREAS - If you do not know where the different areas provided for parking are
located, consult your Dean of Students.
CAR STICKERS - Each and every car driven on the campus should display a Glendale Community
College sticker. Stickers for your car(s) may be obtained from the Student Personnel Office.
PART-TIME WORK - Students interested in part-time work should report to the Dean of Students.
ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING - Because the Installation Banquet is being held on Wednesday of
this week, the Advisory Committee meeting has been postponed until Thursday of next week,
September 23, at Maryland Library.
FACULTY PLEASE NOTE! - Please be sure to check in the Dean's office before you report to your
first classes Monday morning. If there are any room assignment changes, you will be notified
at that time.
WATUSI WINNER - In a recent visit to Las Vegas, Martha Peattie, A.S. Secretary, won a five dollar bill in a watusi dance contest.

THANKS- On behalf of the faculty of Glendale Community College may I thank the student body for its splendid behavior during the registration period.
It was evident that you students understood the problems of heavy registration and lack of available space during the first few days of the semester.
Now that the space problem has improved and each of you has found his way into
his classes, may I urge you to show this same constructive spirit by studying hard during
the remaining weeks of the semester. All of our activities have been gone through to make
it possible for you to achieve academic success.

REGISTRATION MEMO- Beginning Monday all classes at Camelback will be in regular classrooms.
The gym and other temporary rooms will no longer be used. All registration and drop-ads
closed Friday. The registration office has been instructed not to accept requests of this
nature. All students should read page 30 of the College. Catalogue regarding attendance.
They should particularly note that after 5 absences an instructor may require reinstatement into his class. Dean Heuser
YEARBOOK PICTURES - Late-registering sophomore students may have their pictures taken for
the yearbook at the David Lee Studios, 2822 N. 16th Street. The time and place for late-registering freshmen students will be announced later.
LUAU - a Luau, sponsored by the Associated Men Students and the Associated Women Students
will be held on Friday, September 24, 1965, for both branches of Glendale Commnunity College,
for all students. It will be from 9:00 p.m. to 12:00 m., at the Camelback Branch.
I.D. cards will be required.
LIBRARY- The Maryland library Hill be open today, September 20, for both study and circulation
purposes from 7:30 a.m. until 3:20 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Hr. William Sickrey, Camelback librarian, states that the Maryland and Camelback libraries will be working closely together to coordinate services.
FRESHMEN PETITIONS - Election petitions for Freshman Candidates can be picked up on
Monday, September 20, at 8 a.m. in the Dean of Students' office.

LAST FRIDAY'S DANCE - The dance last Friday was the best that we have had. The committee
extends thanks to everyone who contributed to its success. For future dances, let us
remember that smoking is permitted on the outside of the building only.

DRESS - There is some evidence that there is a high correlation between dress and attitude.
Since classroom and office activities are dignified in nature, the dress for these activities
should likewise be dignified; therefore, the acceptable forms of dress in the classrooms and
office; of Glendale Community College shall be slacks or levis for men and dresses or skirts
and blouses for women. Shoes should be worn by both men and women.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN - It is regrettable that many of the classes were handicapped the
first week because of the room shortage. I would urge each student to work with his instructor
to make up whatever time may have been lost. Your willingness to study the extra
bit will insure your good start for the year.

FROSH ELECTIONS - There will be an assembly for the introduction of candidates, Monday,
September 27, in the Maryland auditorium at 12:25 p.m.; and Tuesday, September 28, in the
Camelback Gym at 11:45 a.m. Elections will be held Wednesday and Thursday, September 29th
and 30th at Maryland and Thursday and Friday, September 30th and October 1st at Camelback
from 9:00a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
NEWSPAPER - The newspaper staff states that the first issue of the campus newspaper will be out on Wednesday, September 29. Look for it !!!

CALENDAR CLEARANCE - In order to avoid unnecessary calendar conflicts, dates for all
student activities, such as assemblies, noon dances, evening functions, etc., must be
cleared with Dean Butler before they can be officially scheduled.
FACILITIES CLEARANCE - Rooms and facilities at the Camelback Campus must be cleared with
Mrs. Bailey before they can be officially reserved.
CHOIR- Sounds of music are emanating from the campuses of Glendale Community College. The
Maryland singers are working to be ready for high school assemblies and programs for
community groups. A musical production is planned for in the near future.
INTRAMURAL SPORTS - There will be a short meeting on Monday, Septemher27, at·12:20.p.m.,
in Room 4 at the Maryland Branch, for those boys who are interested in participating in intramural football and intramural basketball.
CHESS CLUB - Have you ever won or lost a game by chance? In chess you win or lose by yourself. On September 22, the Chess Club of Glendale Community College met in Room 5 at 12:30. The following students were elected to office: Berney Oviatt, president; Jerry Flom, vice president; and Annette Fabricant, secretary. Tournaments are in the
process of being arranged with other colleges. Anyone interested 1n chess come to Room 5 at the Maryland Branch on Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m.
HELP WANTED - Drivers who are 21 years of age or older and have a class A chauffeurs' license are needed.
Anyone needing student help should make his request known in the Dean of Students' Office.
Any student wishing part-time employment should register in the same office.

MEN'S GOLF TEAM TRYOUTS- All those interested please report to Camelback Locker Room area,
Wednesday, October 6, 3:15 p.m., or Maryland Locker Room area, Thursday, October 7, 3:15 p.m.
FRESHMAN PICTURES - All freshman students who have registered late (thus missing the photographer) or who have received a notice from Marvel Photo indicating the need for retakes, will have their pictures taken on Friday, October 8th, 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in the Maryland Walnut Room or 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 n. in the Camelback Associated Students' Office.
CAMELBACK BRANCH LIBRARY - To bring expanded service, the library will be open to faculty
and students as follows: Monday-Friday, 7:20 a.m. to 3:20 p.m.; Monday-Thursday, 6:30 p.m.
to 9:00 p.m. There will be a reference librarian en duty each evening. The new hours will
take effect beginning Monday, October 4, 1965.
The Camelback Branch library now has a coin-operated Vico-Matic photocopying machine.
Entirely self-operating, this machine costs ten cents per page and produces negative copy.
Students from both Maryland and Camelback campuses are welcome to make use of this service.
BUSINESS CLUB MEETING - All students interested are invited to attend a Business Club meeting on Thursday, October 7, at 11 :45 a .m.. in Room 25 at Camelback. The order of business will be the formulation of the club.
INTRAMURAL SPORTS- There will be a meeting for all boys who are interested in intramural sports in Room -3 at Maryland on Friday, October 8 at 12:20 p.m.
RACING IN ALLEY - A complaint has been made about the unnecessary motorcycle or scooter racing in the alley at the Maryland Branch about 12: 30 each day.
CLUB MEETINGS -Folk Music Club meets every Wednesday, 3:00 p.m., at Camelback, Room 42.
Chess Club meets every Wednesday, 12:25 p.m., at Maryland, Room 5.
CAMELBACK STUDENT-FACULTY TEA - All women students are invited to the tea.
P.C. FOOTBALL- Glendale Community College students and faculty will be admitted to Phoenix College home football games upon presentation of I.D. card.
STOLEN ARTICLES - Some articles have been taken from a car parked on campus. Students and
faculty members are urged to lock their cars.
PARKING REGULATIONS & CITATIONS- Because the campuses are crowded, parking regulations are
necessary. The first one is that all cars driven by students onto the campus must have a
parking sticker. If a student drives more than one car, each car needs a sticker. The next regulation is that citations must be heeded. Cooperation with the parking regulations benefits all of the student body.
Students are to park their cars in the areas designated for them. Starting Monday, October 4, Read Mullan will be resurfacing and using the area directly east of the Camelback employee parking area.
LOST AND FOUND The lost and found department is located at the Registration Office at Camelback, and at the front desk in the lobby at the Maryland Branch.

MRS. DUTTON HONORED - Mrs. Dutton, Maryland Branch Music Instructor, was listed in the
1965 edition of the "Outstanding Young Women of America." This publication is edited in
Montgomery, Alabama. Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson is honorary chairman of the board of advisory
editors, and Mrs. Dexter Otis Arnold, honorary president of the General Federation of
Women’s Clubs, is chairman of the selection committee. Mrs. Dutton was one of three alumnae
nominated for "Outstanding Young Women of America” by the ASU Alumni Association.

SMOKING - The following statements were made at the State Conference on Smoking and Youth: Every single cigarette a person smokes shortens his life 14.4 minutes. Every smoker will have lung cancer unless he dies of some other cause before the cancer has time to form.

BUSINESS MACHINES CLASS - Two sections of Business 105, Business Machines, will be started
November 4. Students wishing to register for these classes should contact Mrs. McVay at
Camelback. The sections will be scheduled at 9:30 a.m., Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Thursday; and 2: 00 p. m., Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; 2 semester hours of credit
will be given.
BUSINESS CLUB - The Business Club will meet on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 7:00 p.m., at Camelback Branch, Room 1. Get in on the social and meeting planning. The Board will be voted on.

AJCSGA CONVENTION - Glendale Community College hosted the Arizona Junior College Student
Government Association Convention (AJCSGA) last weekend at the Coronet Hotel.
The AJCSGA Convention is held each semester at different Arizona junior colleges, according
to alphabetical sequence of names.
Terry Bloss, Camelback Branch, is president of AJCSGA: Ron Atwood, Camelback Branch, vice-
president and general chairman of the convention; Kris Kinser, Maryland Branch, secretary;
Dave Clark, PC sophomore, treasurer.
The seven junior colleges participating in the convention were Phoenix College, day and evening divisions, Glendale Community College, Mesa Community College, Eastern Arizona
Junior College, Arizona Western College, and Cochise College.
The AJCSGA was organized to obtain benefits for all member colleges "through cooperative
effort and to promote better relations among member colleges and their communities."

ADVISORY COMMITTEE - At its regular meeting of October 20, the Advisory Committee voted to
limit its functions to approval of new clubs, transfer of funds from the Student Contingency
Fund, and planning of the Student Activity Budget. It also voted to refer all other student
business to the Associated Students organization.
AIR FORCE ROTC - Information on the Air Force ROTC may be obtained in the office of the
Dean of Students.
MADRIGAL SINGERS - The Glendale Community College Madrigal Singers sang following the
Masonic York Rite State Convention at Ramada Inn on October 26. They were highly complimented
for their performance by the speaker of the evening, the National Secretary of
Defense during the Dwight Eisenhower administration.
PETITION POR GRADUATION - Students graduating at the end of this semester must complete an
application for graduation and file it in the admissions office no later than November 15.
The application is needed to determine graduation eligibility.
VACATION - There will be no classes on Friday, November 5, due to Arizona Education Association meeting.
Nor will there be classes on Thursday, November 11, Veterans Day. Both
campus libraries will be closed these days.
ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING - A short Advisory Committee meeting will be held Thursday,
November 4, 1965, in the Art Room on the Camelback Campus at 9:00 p.m. (An Associated
Students dance will be held on the Camelback Campus, beginning at 9 :00 p.m.)
CHESS CLUB -The Glendale Community College Chess Club lost its first tournament last
Friday by 2 points. Students who can help the club are urged to come to the meeting
at the Maryland Branch, Room 5, this Wednesday, November 3, at 12:30 p.m. Additional
challenges to other schools are being extended.

WOMEN'S ATHLETICS - All women students interested in trying out for the Volleyball Team

OVIATT BEATS GRAND MASTER - On the 3rdof November, Pal Benko, International Grand Master
of Chess, met his nemesis in the form of Bernard Oviatt, president of the Glendale
Community College Chess Club. The Grand Master conceded to Bernie after 19 moves.
MARYLAND CHOIR - The Madrigal group entertained during intermission at the A.S. Benefit
Dance held on November 4 at the Camelback Gym. The Maryland Choir will also take part
in the drama department presentation at the Arizona State Fair.
MELODRAMA - The Glendale Community College Drama Group, directed by Mr. Peter Overson,
will present a melodrama at the Arizona State Fair, Monday, November 8, at 3 p.m. and
8 p.m. in Room 19.
BOOK LOANS - Students who have outstanding book loans should report to the Office of the
Dean of Students.
GOVERNMENT WORK OFFERED STUDENTS- Part-time government employment in Arizona is available
to qualified students. The merit system test, which must be taken before any person can
gain state employment, is administered at 420 N. 15th Avenue each Tuesday at 8 a.m.
State employment part-time workers earn approximately. $135 a month. For additional information
concerning the test, contact Mrs. King at 271-4651.

ART EXHIBIT- The Phoenix College Evening Division Fine Arts Committee is arranging to have
an Art Exhibit on the night of February 18, coinciding with the appearance of Vincent
Price at the college auditorium. All students and Faculty in the Maricopa County Junior
College District are invited to exhibit with a limit of one entry per person. All entries
are to be received by the 28th of January. Entry forms may be obtained in the Phoenix
College Evening Division Office.

A basketball pep rally will be held this

Campus. The basketball team and Coach will be introduced and the pom pon girls and cheer

SPEEDING in the MARYLAND ALLEYS
Additional complaints have been registered
concerning speeding vehicles in the alleys
around the Maryland campus. Apparently
severe penalties are necessary to stop this
dangerous and disturbing practice.
LIBRARY REMINDER
The Camelback Library is open every Monday
through Thursday evening, 6:30 p.m. to
9:00 p.m. There is a reference Librarian
on duty each evening. So far the use during
the evening hours has been light. The
library serves students from both campuses.
LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
The Fall Leadership Conference, held at Show Low, November 19, 20, and 21, has been
labeled by its participants as the best ever.
Verne Bullock was selected as the best boy delegate; and Martha Peattie, the best girl delegate.
Barry Alexander was given an award for being the best boy “spark plug”;
and Martha Peattie,
the best girl “spark plug. “
Carl Sellars for the second year was awarded a prize for being the best boy actor in the
skits; and Mimi Norton was selected as the best girl actress.
LOST AND FOUND
The Maryland Lost and Found is becoming swamped with lost articles. Students may check
at the Admissions desk in the front lobby to claim lost articles or books.

CONFERENCE APPOINTMENTS - Dr. Prince has appointed Dean Butler to be the advisor for the
Spring Leadership Conference and Dean Pierson to be the advisor for the Glendale delegation
to the Spring State Student Government convention
PHI THETA KAPPA - To be eligible for election to Mu Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa,
a student must satisfy the following conditions:
Current enrollment in at least fifteen semester hours.
Completion of at least fifteen semester hours with a minimum grade point ratio of
1.750 in the semester preceding election.
a. Attainment of a cumulative grade point ratio of 1.500 or
b. Attainment of both a rank in the upper 5% of those enrolled in his curricular
area and a cumulative grade point ratio of 1.750.
The following Maryland students are eligible for Phi Theta Kappa:

MADRIGAL SINGERS ON TV - The Glendale Community College Madrigal
Singers will perform at 6:30 p.m., Christmas Eve, on channel 12.
KTAR TV is preparing special staging and backgrounds for the performance.
PINK ENCHANTMENT -The Winter Formal, sponsored by AWS, will be held December 17, 1965, at
Mountain Shadows. Tickets may be purchased from any AWS officer
or commissioner. The invitation can be extended by a girl or
boy. Appropriate dress for men will be dark suits or dress
pants with either sports coats or dinner jackets.
Women’s attire will range from street-length, semi-formal wear to floor-length formals.
The music will be provided by the Billy Wells Orchestra.
SCHOLARSHIPS and LOANS - Applications for scholarships and
loans for the second semester are now being accepted by Dean
Pierson, Chairman of the Scholarship and Loan Committee.
Renewal of Student Funds scholarships is not automatic. All students who wish a scholar ship for the second semester must apply.
BASKETBALL - Glendale Community College defeated Palo Verde last Saturday 76-64 .
Stan Hickerson was high-point man for the local team with 21 points. On Friday Glendale
lost to Imperial Valley 88-60.
STUDENT NATIONAL EDUCATION ASSOC.- Education majors who wish to join the Student National
Education Association may contact Mr. Matz in room 22, Camelback Campus, or Dr. Lorenzini
in office 48A, Maryland Campus. The cost is $3.00.
ELECTIONS - Elections for second semester student officers will be held during the first
week of January.
SECOND SEMESTER LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE - Present plans for the second semester leadership
conference include the installation of the second semester officers. This conference
will probably be held early in the second semester.
HELP WANTED DURING XMAS SEASON - Students wishing part time employment should report to

AHAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS - On Thursday evening, December 16 at 8:00 p.m., the Glendale
Community College Opera Workshop will present the Nenotti opera, "Amahl and the
Night Visitors” at the Phoenix Women’s Club Building Auditorium. There will be no charge
for the performance; however, as there is limited seating, reservations will be taken at
both Maryland and Camelback registration desks. Those attending without reservations
will be seated last.
BLOOD FOR VIET NAM - The Associated Students organizations are sponsoring a campaign to
give blood for the soldiers fighting in Viet Nam. Pledges will be taken in the office
of the Dean of Students. Transportation to the Southwest blood bank can be provided if
needed. The process of giving blood takes about thirty minutes. Donors must be between
the ages of 18 and 60.
KING AND QUEEN - Final voting to determine the King and Queen of the Winter Formal will
take place on Wednesday and Thursday, December 15 and 16. Preliminary voting took
place last week to determine the finalists on each campus:

If the Maryland sophomore class wishes to organize, a special election will be held; if not, the Camelback sophomore officers will represent both branches.
STUDENT HELP - Students are needed for part-time sales work on a commission basis. Products
include auto, personal care, and home care items. Those interested should call 943-7795
for an interview.
SUMMER JOBS - Copies of Summer Vacation Jobs in Federal Agencies are available in the
Camelback Branch Library. Ask for them at the Circulation Desk. These federal civil
service jobs are open to all applicants and will be offered first to the people with full
qualifications who get the highest scores on the Civil Service Commission examination.
LIBRARY MATERIALS - All materials borrowed from the Camelback and Maryland libraries will
be due Thursday, January 13, 1966. Materials may be checked out on an OVERNIGHT basis from
January 13 through Thursday, January 20. Both libraries will be closed (no books circulated)
during the week of second semester registration (Jan. 24-28) and will open for student use
on Monday, January 31. No grades will be released nor will registration be permitted for
second semester if outstanding library debts are not cleared.
DEBTS AND LOANS - All outstanding debts and loans for the first semester must be paid in full before the student will be permitted to register for the second semester.
ACTIVITY FUNDS - All organizations are requested to determine the amount of money available
for their spring semester activities. Second semester funds for an organization that
reorganizes each semester (A.S., A.W.S., A.M.S., etc.) are frozen until its spending plans
for the spring semester are approved by the budget control committee. Plans should be
submitted to Mr. Vawter, chairman of the committee. An organization with a set of officers
for each campus' (A.S., A.W.S., A.M.S., etc.) must submit a single, joint-spending plan.

employment qualifications and the same procedures as Phoenix College, the accredited
older unit in the County system. Consequently, this letter is to give assurance that
credits for courses completed by your students at your institution will be acceptable
in transfer at the University of Arizona, provided they have a grade of C (3.0) or
better and provided that the courses fit into the degree plans of the curricula at this
University Vocational courses will not carry degree credit here but academic courses

BASKETBALL - Glendale Community College won a thrilling, come-from-behind basketball
victory in a contest with Arizona Western last Saturday. At half time Arizona Western
was leading 50 to 38. But in the second half the Gauchos caught fire defensively and
held the matadors to 23 points while scoring 38 themselves.

BASKETBALL - last Friday night Glendale Community College lost a basketball game to Cochise
93 to 84. The Gauchos led most of the game and outscored the Apaches from the field but
lost at the free throw line. Several car loads of Glendale students traveled to Douglas
to see the game.
HELP WANTED - Men are needed for afternoon delivery work from 2:00 p.m. on. The rate of
pay is $1.50. Those interested should call 279-3439.
Someone who can drive a Cushman Scooter is also needed for delivery, from 12:30 p.m. to
5:00 p.m. at $1.25 an hour. Those interested should call 264-6871.
STUDENT HELP - Student pay, presently 90¢ per hour, will be raised to $1.25, beginning
July 1, 1966.
OUTDOOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION FACILITIES - The contract has been awarded for the construction
of outdoor physical education facilities at Glendale Community College. The items in the
contract consist of one baseball field, six tennis courts, two multi-use courts, one
track and one football field, eight handball courts, decorator fence and curbs and chain
gate. The total funds committed were $95,760.

AIR FORCE COMMISSION - A new two-year Air Force ROTC Commissioning Program has been approved.

BUS TRIP TO TUCSON - The Associated Students and the Folk Music Club are sponsoring a bus
trip to the University of Arizona for the basketball game to be played in Tucson on Saturday,
February 12. The cost of the round trip bus fare will be $4.00 and the cost of the game
will be $1.00 with the LD. card. Departure time is scheduled for 12:00n from the Camelback
Campus. Students who wish to go may file release statements for travel, and they may also
pay in the office of the Dean of Students before 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 9.
CHESS CLUB - The Glendale Community College Chess Club invites all students to learn and
to play the oldest competitive board game in the world. The club meets every Wednesday in
room 5 of the Maryland Branch at 12:30 p.m. Students may contact Bernard Oviatt, Jerry
Flom, Reynold Yee or Bob Long for further information.
CAR WASH - The Wrestling Club will sponsor a car wash on Saturday, February 12, at Thales
Shell Station on 48th Street and Thomas Road. Cars will be washed, dried, and cleaned for
99 cents each.
JOINT AMSMEETING - There will be an important AMS meeting of both campuses on Friday,
February 11, at 12:30 p.m. in room 4 on the Maryland Campus.
TRAFFIC TICKETS - Students who receive traffic tickets may pay the fine in the office of
the Dean of Students Or they may plead their case in traffic court. If they cannot appear

MARYLAND ELECTION - Ed Wilkinson was elected president of the Maryland Associated Sophomore

FIRE DRILL AT CAMELBACK - Generally speaking, the fire drill at Camelback on Thursday,
February 17, was successful; however, a few didn't recognize the signal, and some thought
that the fire drill didn't apply to them. It is expected that the next fire drill will be better.
MARYLAND PARKING - Traffic citations are now being issued for illegal parking on the
Maryland Campus. Fines may be paid on Fridays at a time and place to be designated later.
SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE - A scholarship is available for a student who graduated from Glendale High School. Those interested should see Dean Pierson.
STUDENT DRESS - The following item is taken from the Student Handbook on page 21:
There is some evidence that there is a high correlation between dress and attitude. Since
classroom and office activities are dignified in nature, the dress for these activities
should likewise be dignified; therefore, the acceptable forms of dress in the classrooms
and offices of Glendale Community College shall be slacks or levis for men and dresses or
skirts and blouses for women.
NEW A.M.S. SPONSOR - Mr. Gammage is the new A.M.S. sponsor at Maryland.
COUNSELORS' DAY - Students are invited to chat with their former high school counselors
from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and after 1:00 p.m., in the Walnut Room at Maryland on
Thursday, February 24.
LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE - The leadership conference sponsored last weekend by Glendale
Community College received high praise from observers. Among those giving tribute was a
representative of the Phoenix College faculty, Mr. Polichino, who stated that the
conference was the best that he had ever attended.
INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT - Tom Hanby's team is leading in the intramural basketball
tournament with three wins and no losses. The leading scorer is John Van Rusen with
49 points and a 16.3 game average. Games are being played from 11:45 to 12:45 in the
Camelback Gymnasium with the last one scheduled for Tuesday, February 22. Everyone is
invited to watch the contests.
WRESTLING TOURNAMENT - Spectators and participants are welcome at the first Glendale
Community College intramural wrestling tournament, which will take place from February 28
through March 3 at the following times:

BASEBALL - Glendale Community College is currently in a tie for first place in the state
junior college baseball standings after two victories over Mesa Community College last
Saturday. Mike Sparkes hit a two-run homer in the second game.
MADRIGAL SINGERS - The Glendale Community College Madrigal Singers will sing in the Senate
Charrbers on March 17, St. Patrick's day.
SUCCESSF~L SNOW BOWL TRIP - According to reports, the snow bowl trip was a success. The
Sophomore Class found it a pleasure to sponsor the event, and it hopes that all who
attended had fun;
O’BRIEN HONORED - Mike O’Brien was honored last week by the West Side Optimist Club for
his heroism in saving the life of a retired Navy nurse. A fire was sweeping through a room
of the apartment of Marie A. Pongrantz when O’Brien and Dan Bartels carried her from the
apartment and applied mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Battalion Fire Chief Ted Bentley
stated that the boys were responsible for her being alive today.
PHI THETA KAPPA BANQUET - All current, active members of Phi Theta Kappa are invited to
attend the initiation banquet March 25, 1966. Cost is $3.50 per person. Initiates do
not pay for the banquet, but must pay for their guests. Those interested are urged to
check with Hiss Boerner in Room 22 at Camelback and Miss Kitts, Room 48A at Maryland.
GOLF - Tom Hanby of Glendale Community College shot a fine one over par 36 in a nine hole
golf match with Arizona State College on February 26. The match was played at the
Montezuma Golf Course through rain and snow; Arizona State College's varsity defeated
G.C.C. 4 1/2 to 1 1/2.
CO-ED BADMINTON PING PONG TOURNAMENT - The Camelback Branch co-ed badminton and ping pong
tournament will start on Tuesday, March 15. The games will be played on Tuesdays and
Thursdays in the gymnasium from 11:45-12:45. Those interested can sign up for the tournament
in Miss Kidney's office or on the bulletin board in front of the gym. Everyone is
invited to participate in this tournament.
INTRAMURAL WRESTLING TOURNAMENT - The Semi-Finals of the first annual Glendale Community
Wrestling Tournament will take place starting today, Monday, March 7 through Thursday,
March 10. A list of the semi-finalist wrestlers is posted on the bulletin board near the
southeast door of the gymnasium. Everyone is invited to see these matches.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS CENTER - Scheduled for completion by .June, 1966, the Instructional
Materials Center will serve as the focal point of research and study for Glendale Community
College by reflecting and enriching the curriculum. The single-level edifice features
modular structure which permits partitioning at every nine feet. Designed to accommodate
an eventual enrollment of 5,000 students, the materials center will be flanked on both
sides by enclosed patios and will include a central, open air reading patio. It will temporarily
house nine English and two Social Studies classrooms. When its total area of
almost 38,000 square feet comes into full use, there will be seating for approximately 800
students, and a total capacity for approximately 75,000 volumes. The building will include
a faculty reading room, a coin operated typing room, a microfilm and photo-duplicating
area, and the latest audio-visual equipment on the market. There will, for example, be
individual, centrally monitored listening rooms so that a student wanting to hear a specific
record may request it, check out a pair of earphones, go to an assigned booth, and tune in
to his request.

GOLF - Ives Mohr of Glendale Community College tied for low medalist in the match with
Phoenix College on March 7. Wes shot an outstanding 71 at the Wigwam Country Club, but
Phoenix College defeated G.C.C. 20-7.
INTRAMURALWRESTLTNG TOURNAMENT- John Ploium became champion of the 115 and 123 pound
weight classes in the first annual Glendale Community College Intramural Wrestling
Tournament. The rest of the championship matches will take place this week, Monday,
March 14, through Friday, March 18. A list of the finalist wrestlers is posted on the
bulletin board near the southeast door of the Camelback gymnasium. Everyone is invited to
see these matches.

CO-ED PING PONG AND BADMINTON TOURNAMENTS - The first annual G.C.C. co-ed ping pong and
badminton tournaments will start on Thursday, March 17. The matches will be played each
Tuesday and Thursday from 11:45 to 12:45. All players must sign up with a partner because
we may not be able to find a partner for you. You can enter either of the two tournaments.
Interested participants can sign up for the tournaments on the sheets posted on
Miss Kidney's or the Coaches' door.
WEEK-END BASEBALL RESULTS- G.C.C. defeated the U.of A. Frosh 5 - 3 on Friday, March 11. Bob Smith hit a home run.
Saturday, March 12, G.C.C. lost both games of a doubleheader to P.C. S-Os 4-0.
G.C.C. conference totals so far are 2-2.

INTRAMURAL WRESTLING TOURNAMENT - John Ploium, Carl Cooper, Chris Magadini, Pat Drumm, and

INTRAMURAL WRESTLING TOURNAMENT - John Ploium, Carl Cooper, Bob Pickard, Chris Magadini,

Community College Intramural Wrestling Tournament. The tournament ended on March 21.
CO-ED PING PONG AND BADMINTON TOURNAMENTS- The first annual Glendale Community College
Co-ed Ping Pong and Badminton Tournaments started on Tuesday, March 22. The winning teams
in the Ping Pong Tournament were No.8 and No.9. Those teams winning in the Badminton
Tournament were No. 2, No.4, No.5, No. 10, and No. 14. A list of the members of the
teams in both of the tournaments is posted on the coaches' door at the southeast end of
the gymnasium.
GOLF - Wes Mohr of Glendale Community College was low medalist for G.C.C. in the match
with the Arizona State University Freshmen on March 21. Wes shot a fine 79 at the
Scottsdale Country Club, but A.S.U. Frosh defeated G.C.C. 20 to 7.
ADVISORY COMMITTEE - There will be an Advisory Committee meeting on Tuesday, March 29,
from 7 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., in room 45, on the Maryland Campus.
MEMO FROM DR. PRINCE - Now that Rodeo Week is over, it is time to return to proper dress
on campus. Acceptable dress in the classrooms and offices, for women, is skirts and
blouses or dresses; for men, slacks or levis.
ELECTIONS FOR SPRING SEMI-FORMAL- Elections for King and Queen couples will be held from
8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, March 31 and April 1, 1966 Nominees from
Camelback are May Spector and Terry Bloss; Maria Sherman and Rick Hayford; Alyce Dunn and
Jim Lubenow; Sue Chamberlin and Bruce Hough; Kathy Jablonski and Jim Barriger.

SUMMER EMPLOYMENT - The City of Glendale, Parks and Recreation Department is now accepting
applications for summer employment. Vacancies exist in all sections: playgrounds, sports,
and aquatics. Application blanks can be picked up in the Parks and Recreation office.
PROSPECTIVE GRADUATES - All students who plan to graduate this June must do three things
immediately: 1. File a petition to graduate ~ if you have not done so.
2. Get measured for cap and gown in Admissions Office.
3. Schedule an interview with Dean Heuser.
These items must be done before Easter vacation.
TRY-OUTS FOR SOPHOMORE TALENT SHOW - March 28 to April 1 will be the week to try-out for
the Sophomore Talent Show. Students interested, should contact a sophomore officer and
your try-out time will be assigned to you. The Talent Show will be held on April 15, at the
Washington Ivomen' s Club.
RED CROSS SENIOR LIFE SAVING CLASSES - Classes will begin April 25, and continue for three
weeks on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings from 6: 00 to 9: 00 p. m., at Encanto
swimming pool, 15th Avenue & Encanto Blvd.
RED CROSS WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR -Classes will begin April 25, and continue for four
weeks on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., at Madison Park
swimming pool, 15th Street and Glenrosa. Prerequisite: must hold a current Red Cross
Senior Life Saving certificate.

LAW DAY AT A.S.U.- The fourth annual A.S.U. Law Day will be held Saturday, April 16, 1966.
Meetings begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Business Administration Building. Prominent legal
figures will speak during the day. Registration forms may be obtained from Dean Pierson
or Dean Capper.
LIBRARY NOTICE- In the interest of economizing everywhere, as directed by the district, the
Camelback library will be closed evenings after Tuesday, March 29, 1966. Books signed out
by evening students only, and due between March 30 and April 13, may be returned to the
Admissions office. All library books with a date due of Tuesday, April 12, should be
returned on Wednesday, April 13, since classes resume on that day.
SUMMER EMPLOYMENT - Interviews will begin next week at the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department for life guards and recreation aides. Anyone interested, may obtain an application at the Municipal Building, 251 West Washington Street.
AUTO DECALS - Glendale Community College auto decals are now on sale at Maryland in the lobby,
and at Camelback, in Gaucho Gardens. They may also be obtained in the Dean of Students'
office at both campuses. A.S. officers are selling these attractive decals for 10 & 15¢ each.
CHESS CLUB MEETING - There will be a meeting of the G.C.C. Chess Club on Wednesday, April 13,
at 12:30 p.m., in room 5 at the Maryland Branch.
GOLF - Glendale Community College won its first golf match in its short golf history defeating
Cochise 17-10, Friday, March 25, at Maryvale Golf Course. Wes Mohr tied for low medalist
with a 71. Tom Hanby shot a 78 and scored 2 1/2 points. Jim Rutherford and Dan Pratt scored
3 points. The real heroes were Keith Clark with a 78 and Corky Northrup with an 80
scoring 9 points against their opponents.
CO-ED PING PONG AND BADNINTON TOURNAMENTS - The quarter-finalists in the Co-ed Ping Pong
and Badminton tournaments are as follows: Badminton -teams No.1, No.2, No.4, No.5,
No.8, No.9, No. 10, and No. 14. Ping Pong-Teams No.2, No.3, No. 4, No. 7, No.8,
No.9, No. 10, No. 12. A list of the members of the teams in both of the tournaments is

INTR/H1URr'\L. BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP - Maryland Sophomore Class won the intra-mural
championship defeating the 11 :30 P.E. Class. Top scorer was Jim Scritchfield for the
Sophomores with 15 points, followed by Ron Stern with 14 for P.E. The Sophomore players
'I/ere: Scott Mitchell, Tom Morgan, Ed Wilkinson, Larry Landis, Jim Rutherford and Hike Tudor.
The P.E. players were: Gary Diamond, Don Shaver, George Munoz, Bob Cooley and Gary Hintz.

GOLF - Glendale Community College defeated Mesa Community College 15~ to 8~ at Bisbee
Country Club on Friday, April 1. Arizona University Frosh defeated Glendale Community
College 24 to 3 at the Vono Valley Country Club, Tucson, Arizona. Wes Mohr was low
medalist with a 74. Cochise Junior College defeated Glendale Community College 9~ to 8~
at Bisbee Country Club on Friday, April 1. Arizona State University Frosh defeated Glendale
Community College 17~ to 9~ at the Goodyear Golf and Country Club. Wes Mohr was medalist
with a 74.
GOLF FLASH - Wes Mohr and his partner Bob Tellier last week won the Valley of the Sun Golf
Classic gross championship thereby earning a trip to Las Vegas. Wes shot a fine 71 and a
70 over two of the valleys golf courses, Papago and Encanto. About 200 golfers participated
in this tournament.
MEN'S SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT _ The annual Men's Softball Tournament will start on Tuesday,
April 26 and the games will be played every Tuesday and Thursday from 11:45 to 12:45.
Each team shall consist of nine players. Interested participants can sign up for the
tournamen.t on the coaches' door, near the southeast door of the Camelback gym.
CO-ED BADMINTON AND PING PONG TOURNAMENTS - The championship game in badminton will be
played on Tuesday, April 19, between Team No.9 (Mel Grove and Pam Bedell) and Team No.4
(Corky Fenton and Cheryl Watson). The ping pong championship game will be played on
Thursday, April 21. Team No. 8 (Weldon McDonald and Susan Stubbe) will play Team No.4
(Corky Fenton and Cheryl Watson). The winner will play against Bob and Cindy Noice for
the championship on April 21.
A.F.S. DANCE - The Freshman Class is sponsoring a dance on April 22, 1966 in the Camelback
gymnasium. The New Generations will play from 9:00 p.m. to midnight. Admission is free
with a Glendale Community College I.D. card.
USE OF GENERAL ALLEYWAYS - It shall be unlawful for any person to use an alley within the
city as a thoroughfare. Alleys shall be used as a means of access to the rear end of lots
and buildings only, except by fire department, police department, or by other authorized
emergency vehicles, garbage and trash vehicles.
Phoenix Law, Section 37-19-1, states that a 15 miles per hour speed limit must be, observed
in alley ways.
ATTENTION GRADUATES - All graduating sophomores should be measured for caps and gowns if
they have not done so.

MEN’S INTRAMURAL SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT - The annual Men's Softball Tournament will start

Ping Pong Championship game between Bob and Cindy Noice, and Weldon McDonald and Susan
Stubbe will be played at 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, April 26 in the Camelback gym. Everyone
is invited to see this final championship game.

or their advisor before making any long distance calls. These calls should be placed
through the Phoenix College switchboard, and the student should properly identify

Tuesday, April 26, 1966. There are five teams entered in the tournament and their team
captains are as follows; Bob Noice, Jim Sandoval, Richard Durham, Ron Anderson, and
Weldon McDonald.
SOFTBALL RESULTS - Tuesday, April 26, 1966, Richard Durham's team defeated Ron Anderson's
team by a score of 7 to 3. Jim Sandoval's team forfeited to Bob Noice’s team. Everyone
is invited to see these fine softball games every Tuesday and Thursday starting at '
11:50 a.m. at Camelback.
GAUCHO DAY - Gaucho Day will be held on Hay 6,9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the Pera Club I

LIBRARY NOTICE - Students are asked to observe the following change in schedule when
borrowing materials from Camelback and Maryland Branch Libraries:
All books will be due Friday, May 20, and will circulate overnight during the week of
final exams (Monday - Thursday, May 23 - 26).
Please return all materials and clear library debts so that your grades and transcripts
may be released.
Both libraries close May 27, and will reopen in new quarters (6000 West Olive Avenue,
Glendale, Arizona) at the beginning of the fall term, 1966.
DRESS - The acceptable forms of dress in the classrooms and offices of Glendale Community
College shall be slacks or levis for men and dresses or skirts and blouses for women.
GRADUATES - Announcements are in. You may pay for them and pick them up at the Camelback
and Maryland Branches.
PARENTS' NIGHT - Parents' Night is Friday, May 13, 1966. It will be held at the Camelback
Branch Campus at 8:00 p.m. There will be a Social Hour and an Entertainment Program.

RECREATIONAL SWIMMING - There will be recreational swimming for all students at the

ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING - There will be a meeting of the Advisory Committee in Room 40
on the Camelback Campus Tuesday, May 17 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
A.S. SCHOLARSHIPS -Applications for Associated Students Scholarships ($28 per semester)

PHI THETA KAPPA MEETING - There will be a Phi Theta Kappa meeting at the Phoenix College

MORNING SCHEDULE FOR HONORS ASSEMBLY - Students, remember the shortened morning schedule
for Maryland on Tuesday, May 17, and Camelback on Thursday, May 19. It will be as follows
for all three credit classes meeting for 75 minutes on Tuesday-Thursday:
7:30 a.m. - 8:40 a.m.
8:50 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
10:10 a.m. - 11:20 a.m.
11:30 a.m. - Honors Assembly
Classes which normally meet for ~ hour on these days, will continue to meet at the
regular time for the entire class period.
GLENDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE ELIGIBILITY - All students who are attending Glendale Community
College at present, are eligible to attend our new campus next fall. The attendance zone
rules state that a student who lives in the Phoenix College zone may attend Mesa or
Glendale Community College, but a person living in the Mesa or Glendale Community College
zone may not attend Phoenix College without special permission from the Dean of Admission.
Students living in Arcadia, Camelback, Central or other districts are welcome to attend
if they don’t mind the extra miles. WE GUARANTEE PLENTY OF PAVED PARKING AREA.

A MESSAGE FROM DR. PRINCE - The academic year is drawing to a close. What happens
during the last two weeks is of great importance to the students of Glendale College.
The week of May 16 can be devoted to careful review and firming up of one's knowledge
in his Courses. The week of May 23 will determine how well the preceeding 17 weeks
have been spent. I urge all of the students of Glendale College to devote their time,
energy, and intelligence to bring the second semester to a successful academic conclusion.

ANNUALS - Annuals will be delivered on Friday, May 20, for distribution by Monday if the
printer meets his promised delivery date
Kudos to Mr. Conrad Bayley and his staff for meeting a difficult deadline.
MEN'S INTRAMURAL MUSHBALL TOURNAMENT - The semi-finals of the Men's Mushball Tournament
was held on May 12. Bob Noice vs. Weldon McDonald’s team. The championship game between
the winners of the semi-final round will be played on Tuesday, May 17, at 11:50 a.m. at
the southwest corner of the Camelback softball field. Everyone is invited to the game.
GOLF - The Arizona State University Frosh defeated Glendale Community College by a score
of 22 1/2 to 4 1/2. The match was played on Nay 2 at the Wigwam Country Club and Tom Hanby was
the low medalist for G.C.C. with a 79.
Glendale Community College defeated Nesa Community College by a score of 26~ to~. The
match was played at the Maryvale Golf Course on Friday, May 6, and Wes Nohr of G.C.C.
was the low medalist with a fine round of 71.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM
BASEBALL- Glendale Community College ended its season at 8-12 with a doubleheader sweep
over Eastern Arizona, 5-2 in eight innings and 18-1 in the nightcap.
Jim Stolle stroked five hits, and Craig Scheibel and Richard Mentlick four hits apiece
to pace the winners at the plate.
PARENTS' NIGHT - From all the favorable reports, Parents' Night was a very successful
affair. The committee wishes to thank everyone who participated in the program, with
special appreciation to the Honor Boards and their sponsors, Miss Boerner and Miss Kitts.
A special vote of thanks is extended to Hr. Burton and his crew: Bill Estes, Scotty Hilton,
Ray Sankey, Bill Peck, Allen Ficcaglia, Jim Rupe, Tom Votjko and Roger Luth.
