ACADEMIC REGALIA
The present-day academic costume seemingly originated at Oxford and
Cambridge Universities in the 1300s. As the universities passed from
ecclesiastical control, brighter colors distinguished the academic robe
from the drab clerical gown. Colonial American universities based their
academic regalia on the British system.
In 1893, an intercollegiate commission established a uniform code for
caps, gowns and hoods for the various degrees.
Black tassels are correct for all degrees, and colored tassels are worn
only by preference. The doctor's cap and president's of universities or
colleges may have tassels of gold thread . The tassel should be worn
draped over the left front quarter of the cap.
The usual color for academic gowns in the United States is black. The
bachelor's gown is worn closed; the master's and doctor's may be worn
open or closed . The shape of the sleeve is the distinguishing mark of the
gowns; bachelor, long pointed sleeves; master, oblong sleeves open at
the wrist; doctor, bell-shaped with three velvet bars on each sleeve.
Of the costume's three components, the hood is the most interesting.
Originally it had three uses: as a head covering; as a shoulder cape; and
as a bag in which alms could be collected. It is mentioned as early as
1480 in clerical literature. When large wigs were in vogue in Britain, the
cape part of the hood was split in front and a narrow neckband inserted.
The entire cape and hood was allowed to fall back as it is today, and it
was never restored to the original style.
The hoods are lined with the color of the institution which awarded
the degree to the wearer. The color of the border or collar of the hood
designates the degree.

Graduation with Honors
* Designates students graduating "With Distinction." These graduates
are wearing the White Honor Cord and have a cumulative grade
point average of 3.500 to 3.699.
** Designates students graduating "With High Distinction." These
graduates are wearing the Red Honor Cord and have a cumulative
grade point average from 3.700 to 3.899.
*** Designates students graduating "With Highest Distinction." These
graduates are wearing the Gold Honor Cord and have a cumulative
grade point average from 3.900 to 4.000.
Honors Program Graduates
Graduates wearing Honors Program medallions have completed
designated honors courses distributed among four course prefixes and
have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
Honorary Society Membership
Graduates wearing the gold PTK stole are members of Phi Theta
Kappa, Omicron Lambda Chapter. Phi Theta Kappa is the National
Honor Fraternity of the American Two Year College.
Graduates wearing the gold and blue Psi Beta cord are members of Psi
Beta Chapter of the National Psi Beta. Psi Beta is the National Honor
Society in Psychology of the American Two Year College.
Graduates wearing the gold cord and black Sigma Chi Eta pin are
members of Sigma Chi Eta, Alpha Gamma Chapter. Sigma Chi Eta
is the National Communication Fraternity of the American Two Year
College.

Andrea Hashim, GCC Dance Program Director served as master of
ceremonies at the ninth annual Artists of Promise
Glendale Community College Director of Bands, Bill Humbert, was lauded
as Arizona's "Music Educator of the Year."

Communication faculty Kirt Shineman's play "Germs and Viruses" was
selected as one ofthree finalists to be presented atthe Region VIII Kennedy
Center American College Theatre Festival. In November, Shineman won
the National Communication Association (NCA) Community College
Section election for Chairman. His play "Forbidden Glass" was a finalist
in the 2013 Great Gay Play Contest for Pride Films and Plays in Chicago.

the MCCCD Diversity Advisory Council's 2013 Award of Excellence
representing GCC, for creating the Human Library. '
Faculty member Jim Daugherty successfully earned the ITIL Intermediate
Certificate in Operational Support and Analysis.
Tomomi Hayashi and Shigeko Toyota received a grant award for $56,800,
which covered nineteen deserving Japanese language students' travel to
Japan in May for a week long cultural and language enrichment program.
Dr. Walter Bumphus, president and CEO of American Association of
Community Colleges, appointed Dr. Rene Diaz-Lefebvre, Professor
of Psychology, to serve as a member of the 21st Century InitiativeÂImplementation
Team (Faculty Engagement & Leadership Development).
Dean Wheeler was awarded a Global Engagement in Mexico 2013
Faculty Curriculum Development Program, Understanding Mexico: The
Past, Present, and Future grant award to travel to Mexico this coming
summer.
Dr. Ruth Callahan was recently recognized for her work on the holocaust
and given the Shofar Award.

Student Accolades
The ninth annual Artists of Promise featured several GCC student pieces
including art by Arnon Livingstone, Danielle Mikulski, Jennifer Mayhew
Jones, Claudia Martinez and Elizabeth Pineda. GCC students swept the
Instrumental Ensembles category, taking first, second and third place.
First place honors went to GCC's Guitar Octet ensemble: Ricardo
Araiza, Michael Hawley, Luis Martinez, Hans Nieschulz, Jonathan
Nilsen, Joshua Pierce, Christian Pascale and Alex Resnick. Olive Ave
Guitar Duo (Jonathan Nilson and Christian Pascale) placed second
and Guitar Duo (Laura Meador and Joshua Pierce) placed third in the
category. Sam Rabourn and Christopher Montano took first and second
place, respectively, in the Composition competition. Christian Pascale
took first place in Guitar performance, and Jonathan Nilsen, third in the
category. Alberto Vargas won third-place honors in Piano. GCC's Theatre
Department acted their way to the top, with Jaime Gaeta taking first
place in Male Acting , followed by Austin Kiehle, second place, and Luis
Prado III in third place. In the Female Acting category, Salome Chuma
took second place and Bailey Hall placed third. Wendell Owens took third
place in Solo Choreography and Alejandra Cavazos garnered second
place in Group Choreography.
Taneka Rubin leaves Glendale Community College in May on a high
note; after playing for the GCC Lady Gauchos for the past two seasons,
she will be moving to Tallahassee to attend Florida A & M on a basketball
scholarship.
Eight students' performances & participation in the Spring Theatre
production "Splitting Issues (And Several Other Noteworthy Concerns)"
were nominated by the Kennedy Center American College Theatre
Festival in various categories: Acting - Bailey Hall, JJ Hansen; Stage
Management - Danielle Lopez; Properties Design - Angela O'Connor;
Media Projections Design - Kevin O'Connor; Lighting Design - JJ Hansen;
Make up & Hair Design - Jordan Taylor; Sound Design - Kristopher
Swinson.
Robert Moreno and Wendy Respardo, both 20 years old, each received
a $2,000 scholarship at the sixth annual "40 Hispanic leaders Under 40"
event.
GCC's special-projects engineering class saw the fruits of their labor
ascend to the edge of space after months of hard work and a morning
launch in the Arizona desert south of Phoenix when they participated in
Flight 14 of the Arizona Space Grant ASCEND! Their goal: build satellite
prototypes to be lifted by a weather balloon to 92,000 feet above the
desert floor into the part of the atmosphere known as "near space."
Congrats to the GCC Forensics team for their success in the International
Forensics Association speech competition in Europe!

Beau Grothendick was selected as a member of the 2013 All-USA
Community College Academic Team. Only 20 students from more than

Dr. Irene Kovala addressed a gathering of students, staff, faculty and
guests from the community as she joined with college presidents around
the nation in signing the American College and University Presidents'
Climate Commitment.
Mary Blackwell received GCC's coveted Woman of Distinction Award for
demonstrating excellent leadership on many levels.
The best of the state's high school science scholars descended upon
GCC for the annual Arizona Science Olympiad in March on the college's
main campus.
The new Alumni News Web site was launched featuring Facebook posts,
Homecoming highlights, the Gaucho store plus stories about alumni,
donors and scholarship winners.
Dr. Allan E. Goodman, president and CEO of the Institute of International
Education, congratulated President Irene Kovala for GCC being notable
among this year's Fulbright Scholarship colleges. Ken Bus, singled out
by Dr. Goodman for his contributions to the Fulbright program, is a 2007
Fulbright grant recipient.
Glendale Community College has been designated a Military Friendly
School by G.!. Jobs, a magazine for military personnel transitioning into
civilian life. The 2012 Military Friendly Schools list honors the top 20
percent of colleges, universities and trade schools.
Two additional bachelor's degrees from Northern Arizona University can
now be earned here at Glendale Community College. Now offered are a
Bachelor of Applied Science in Administration and a Bachelor of Sciencel
Bachelor of Arts Interdisciplinary Studies: Technology Management.
GCC was selected as a finalist in the 2012 Second Nature Climate
Leadership Awards, creating a video as part of the competition.
Nominations were invited from American College & University Presidents'
Climate Commitment signatory institutions.
Gauchos earned their 17th appearance in the Valley of the Sun Bowl
playing against the Dean College Bulldogs. The football team finished the
regular season with an 8-3 overall record and a No. 17 ranking.
In the 2013 National RecycieMania competition among colleges and
universities, GCC recycled more than 40,800 Ibs. or 20.41 tons of reÂcyclables!
Our cumulative Greenhouse Gas Reductions efforts during
the competition were 59 Metric Tons of C02 Equivalent, or 12 cars off
the road, or the energy consumption of 5 households!

The area surrounding and in front of the platform is restricted, and only
those participating in the commencement ceremony may enter.
~ Several special seating areas are located around the arena for 0. guests that require wheelchair accomodations.
Commencement is truly a family event. To ensure the safety of children
and guests, please keep your children with you and supervised at all
times.
Thank you for your cooperation.
The commencement ceremony will be available on DVD. You may order a DVD
of the ceremony by paying a $10.00 fee at the Cashier's Office. Submit the
receipt to the Media Center located in the library. Orders will not be accepted at
the commencement ceremony. DVD's will be available after June 17, 2013 in the
Media Center, Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
