President William Henry Harrison won fame as an Indian fighter and a hero of the War of 1812. Following his resignation from the Army in 1814, he
pursued a career in politics and diplomacy, but was not well- known. In 1840 he won election to the presidency. One month after his inauguration he
caught pneumonia and on April 4, 1841, he died at Washington, D. C.
Due to illness, Anna Harrison did not go to Washington after her husband's election. The president asked his widowed daughter- in- law, Jane Irwin
Harrison, to act as his hostess until Anna's expected arrival in May. After Harrison's death in April, Anna did not make the trip but remained at home in
North Bend until she died in 1864.
