1867 - Territorial capitol moves from Prescott to Tucson.
1866 - War with the Hualapai Indians begins. A military encampment set up at Beale's Springs to protect the mail route through the area.
1866 - Richard Cunningham McCormick appointed as second Arizona Territorial Governor. First Governor to bring his wife to the Territory.
1868 - Thomas Hunter brought the first herd of cattle to graze in the Salt River Valley.
Andrew Johnson was born in
1808 at Raleigh, North Carolina.
He was self- educated. His
interest in politics led him to
serve in the House of
Representatives, as governor of
Tennessee, and as a senator.
Eliza McCardle Johnson was
born in 1810, the daughter of a
shoemaker in Greeneville,
Tennessee. She received a good
basic education that she shared
with her young husband after their
marriage in 1827, when she was
16 and he 17. The Johnsons had
five children.
President Andrew Johnson was the only southern senator to stand by the Union in the Civil War. Lincoln made him Military Governor of Tennessee in
1862, and he became Lincoln's running mate in 1864. He became president on Lincoln's death in 1865, but was not successful in carrying out Lincoln's
policies. He was impeached for defying the Tenure of Office Act, but the opposition failed to convict him. He again was elected to the Senate in 1875,
and died that same year.
Eliza Johnson took little pleasure in her position as a president's wife, but she was a competent and gracious hostess, even during the impeachment. She
was happy to return to her Tennessee home at the end of Johnson's term. She died in 1876, having outlived her husband by only six months.
