George Herbert Walker Bush
was born in 1924 in Milton,
Massachusetts. He enlisted in the
Navy on his 18th birthday and flew
58 combat missions during World
War II. He was shot down over
the Pacific and awarded the
Distinguished Flying Cross for
bravery in action. He is a
graduate of Yale University,
where he excelled in sports.
Barbara Pierce Bush was born
in 1925 and grew up in Rye, New
York. While at boarding school
in South Carolina, she met George
Bush. They were married on
January 6, 1945. One of their six
children is George W. Bush, who
became the 43rd President.
After his discharge from the Navy, President George H. W. Bush completed his education at Yale and turned to a career in the oil industry in West
Texas. He became interested in public service and politics and served two terms as a United States Representative from Texas. After running
unsuccessfully for the Senate he served as Ambassador to the United Nations, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, and Director of the
Central Intelligence Agency. In 1980 he was chosen by Ronald Regan as his Vice- President running mate. As Vice- President he had responsibilities in
the areas of Federal deregulation and anti- drug programs. He was elected President in 1988 and faced a changing world with the end of the Cold War and
the break- up of the Soviet Union. President Bush sent American troops into Panama to overthrow the corrupt regime of Manuel Noriega, and into Kuwait
after it was invaded by Saddam Hussein of Iraq. President Bush lost his bid for re- election in 1992.
During their years in Texas and while George Bush served in various positions, Barbara Bush managed 29 moves of her family. She was the family
linchpin while her husband was away. The family suffered the tragic loss of daughter Robin at the age of three. Barbara was esteemed by the voters and
the press for her friendly, open manner. Today the Bushes live in a home they built in Houston, Texas.
