George W. Bush was born in
1946 in New Haven, Connecticut,
and grew up in Midland and
Houston, Texas. He graduated
from Yale, then served in the
Texas Air National Guard, flying
F- 102 fighters. He received a
Master's degree from Harvard
Business School in 1975.
Laura Welch Bush was born in
1946 in Midland, Texas. She
earned a degree in education from
Southern Methodist University
and taught in public schools in
Dallas and Houston, then earned a
master of library science degree
from the University of Texas.
Laura and George Bush were
married in 1977.
President George W. Bush was elected Governor of Texas in 1994. In 2001 he was elected President of the United States. During his administration he
signed into law tax relief, as well as the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. President Bush worked to modernize Medicare and to provide a prescription
drug benefit for seniors. He supported faith based programs that encourage everyone to help others in need. After the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack
on the United States, President Bush took steps he felt were appropriate to protect the United States and other countries which came under attack from the
same groups in the years that followed. He invaded Afghanistan and Iraq, engaging in wars that continued throughout his time in office.
During her years as First Lady Laura Bush placed particular emphasis on education, health care and human rights. Drawing on her background as a
teacher and librarian, she has served as Honorary Ambassador for the United Nations Literacy Decade, and was an international spokesperson for efforts
to educate people throughout the world, especially women and girls. She convened the Summit on Early Childhood Cognitive Development and worked
with such programs as Teach for America.
