of
1950
.

Hudson
(father)
;

Hudson
(son)

.
Two
motorboats
were
used
on this
trip
-
the
Esmeralda
,
built
and
operated
by
Ed
Hudson
, and a
standard
19
foot
Chris
Craft
operated
by
Otis
Marston
. The
purpose
of this
trip
was to
determine
the
best
means
of
river
travell
--
rowboats
,
rafts
, or
motorboats
. The
river
flow
during
this
trip
was
much
lower
than the
previous
year's
trip
.
During
the
1949
trip
, the
river
was
flowing
at
60,000
cfs
and

the
1950
trip
it
was
flowing
at
50,000
cfs

flow
difference
of
10,000
cfs
was
substantial
, and
after
attempting
the
first
rapid
at this
lower
volume
,
both
vessels
were
damaged
. The
boats
and
passengers
suffered
through
many
dangerous
rapids
and
rescues
during
the
1950
trip
, and
approximately
half-way
through
the
canyon
,
Edbert
Hudson
abandoned
his
boat
. The
passengers
riding
in his
boat
were
transferred
to
Marston's
boat
, and
Edbert
Hudson
and his
son
were
picked
up
individually
by
two
helicopters
.
During
Edbert
Hudson's
flight
, his
helicopter
crashed
; he was
filming
during
the
flight
and
captured
the
crash
on
tape
.
Both
Edbert
Hudson
and the
pilot
survived
the
crash
.
Edward
Hudson's
rescue
was
less
eventful
.
Marston's
boat
finally
made
it
through
the
canyon
and
arrived
at
Boulder
City
,
Nevada
on
June
21
,
nine
days
after
they
began
the
trip
.
