Regular Meeting
October 13, 1942.
Meeting called to order at 8:15 P.M. by the vice-president, Dr. V.G. Presson, in the absence of the secretary. Minutes of the May meeting were read and approved.
Dr. Rudolph reported for Public Relations Committee on the status of the doctors in relation to the war effort with a report in the number of men already in the service and the number of those available. His conclusion was that about 50% of the doctors had been called. He also reported on the steps taken on publicity under the emergency. Dr. Biddle commented on this, urging that the people be educated to go to the office when available and cooperative. Dr. Rudolph then read a communication indicating action already had been taken on this subject. A number of other members spoke on this subject and Dr. Presson urged the Committee to continue the publicity work.
Dr. Presson then brought up the subject of medical care at the County Hospital, stating that more attention could not be given to the work at the Hospital. Dr. Rudolph then asked for further help on the County service. He asked for volunteers to give consultation service on gynecology and surgery at the County Clinic to help Dr. Alloway.
Dr. Hugh Thompson spoke of the difficulty in getting resident physicians for the hospitals and suggested that the doctors give more time in teaching the resident physicians.
Dr. Hayden gave a report of the inspection made by the representative of the American College of Surgeons.
A letter from Dr. Hilda Kroeger of the Maternal and Child Health Division of the State Department of Health was read. It referred to the obstetric and pediatric care for wives and infants of men in military service. Dr. Hugh Thompson and Dr. C.R. Kroeger discussed the objections to the program outlined. More discussions followed. Dr. Clyne then moved that a Committee be appointed to investigate the above program. Motion seconded by Dr. Hayden. Passed. Dr. Hugh Thompson and Dr. Clyne were appointed.
A letter from Dr. Hugh Thompson resigning from the Selective Service work was read; and, another suggesting action to be taken by the Pima County Medical Society was also read. Dr. Biddle moved and Dr. Kibler seconded the motion that the Society go on record advocating that the examination of all candidates except those claiming exemptions is a waste of time and that the Society refuse to do these examinations. General discussion followed. Motion lost. Dr. Hugh Thompson moved that the Secretary write General Tuthill telling him that the Society generally is of the opinion that the examinations now conducted are a waste of time as they are not examinations; and, that while we are willing to give our time we see no use in examining men that clain [ claim ] no disqualifications. Motion passed.
