Regular Meeting
November 11, 1947.
Meeting called to order by the President, Dr. Smelker, in the Pima County Hospital.
Dr. Harry Thompson introduced our first guest speaker, Dr. Arthur Kendall, who spoke on "Epidemiology of Poliomyelitis."
The second guest speaker, Dr. Vern Mason, was introduced by Dr. Cogswell. His paper was entitled "Effect of the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima." General discussion followed.
Before opening the business meeting, Dr. Senoff [ Semoff ? ] introduced the new head of our School of Pharmacy, Dr. Rufus A. Lyman.
A motion was made, seconded and passed that the minutes of the previous meeting be suspended.
Application for membership for Dr. Nathan S. Kolins was accepted.
Announcement of the Tucson Rheu [ Rheumatism ] Society that the first meeting of the year would be for a dinner, December 5th, at the Pioneer Hotel, at $2.75 per reservation, was made by Dr. Bloom. Program arranged.
Dr. Smelker reported on the meeting of the Executive Committee and urged that [ "that" crossed out ] the passage of a motion to increase the dues. The secretary of the Committee reported on Dr. Hugh Thompson's motion to increase the dues by Twenty Dollars ($20.00) per year, five dollars ($5.00) of this to be earmarked for the Speakers' Fund. It was explained that the increase in dues was to handle the increased business of the Society. Motion made by Dr. Littlefield was seconded and passed. Dr. Hastings announced the action taken by the State Association in raising State dues to Fifty Dollars ($50.00)--making a total of local and State dues of Seventy-five Dollars ($75.00) per member per year, beginning January first, 1948.
The Secretary further reported that the Executive Committee passed a motion that the Society sponsor a Local Health Council. Dr. Smelker appointed Doctors Harry Thompson, R.E. Hastings and Donald F. Hill.
Dr. Hastings reported on the progress of the State Meeting and asked that papers be submitted.
Dr. Smelker appointed the following for the nomination ballot: Doctors Littlefield, Present and Mandel.
Dr. Littlefield suggested that steps be taken to help people, particularly strangers, in getting doctors at night, Dr. Smelker suggested we all make a better effort and that 2818 could be used.
