Regular Meeting
October 12, 1948.
Meeting called to order by Dr. R.E. Hastings, president. Minutes of previous special meeting and executive committee meeting read and approved.
Mr. Wm. Pyle opened an [ "opened an" crossed out ] addressed to the Society relative to the Sunshine Climate Club. He then introduced Mr. [ "Mr." crossed out ] his assistant, who demonstrated a chart on Pima County income, and who stressed the importance of tourists to Tucson.
Ten [ crossed out: Ten ; handwritten: Eleven ] medical applicants for membership in Pima County Medical Society were approved--Doctors: John F. Strauss, George DeYoung, J.L. Whitehill, Edwin C. Graf, Ephraim Kahn, F. [ S. (Sidney?)] W. Ballard, D.W. Neubauer, David Marcus, Ralph H. Fuller and [ crossed out: and ] A.C. Van Ravenswaay [ handwritten: , and ] John K. Bennett.
A letter from Dr. J.E. Gaines [ handwritten: manager ] of the Veterans Administration Hospital was read, offering the facilities of the Hospital library to the members of the Society.
Dr. E.M. Hayden discussed some of the clauses in the Articles of Incorporation. It has been proposed that four (4) new directors be elected each year. Also, proposed that the president, vice-president and secretary be elected by the board of directors, the board consisting of the executive committee who are the elected delegates and the directly elected directors each year.
Proposals discussed by Doctors Littlefield, Harry Thompson. Dr. Harry Thompson moved that the above proposed system of election not be approved. Seconded by Dr. Littlefield. Dr. Holbrook discussed the motion, stressing the advisability of electing a staggered board of directors. Dr. Holbrook also favored the regular election of officers. Dr. Hill discussed the motion further. Dr. Harry Thompson restated his motion. He moved that proposed by-laws covering election of officers not be approved. Motion carried. A two-year probationary membership is also included in the proposal.
A motion that a two-year term membership clause be deleted was made by Dr. Earl Brown, seconded by Dr. Lindberg. Motion defeated.
Dr. Arthur Present read a letter explaining the budget for the year [ crossed out: for the year ] of the Pima County Unit of the Arizona Division of the American Cancer Society. The letter also was a statement of the activities, plans and purposes of the Pima County Unit.
The regular program was then presented. Dr. C.A. Thomas presented Dr. Frank Milloy of Phoenix who discussed the activities of [ handwritten: Arizona ] Physicians and Surgeons Committee.
Dr. W.G. Shultz discussed the activities of the American Association of Physicians and Surgeons.
Dr. Hastings announced that Dr. Louis Alesen will talk on the next Sunday Evening Forum, October 17th.
Dr. Hugh Thompson urged that all employed persons become members of Blue Shield and Blue Cross.
