January 6, 1949
Executive Committee Meeting.
The meeting was called to order by Dr. R.E. Hastings.
Members present were: Dr. William B. Steen Dr. E.H. Brown
Dr. A.N. Shoun Dr. R.E. Hastings
Dr. J. Donald Francis Dr. H.H. Brainard
Dr. E.M. Hayden Dr. Harry Thompson
Dr. W. Roy Hewitt Dr. H.D. Cogswell
Dr. Harry Thompson moved that it be recommended to the Society that Delegates of three, two and one years be elected unanimously in chronological order, according to the number of votes which they have received. Dr. E.H. Brown seconded this motion, and upon being put to vote, it was unanimously carried.
A letter from Dr. R.J. Callender [ Callander ], who is at the Veterans Administration Hospital at Mountain Home, Tennessee, was read, in which he requested to be made an Associate Member. Discussion disclosed that the A.M.A. is reluctant to have doctors hang on to memberships elsewhere when they are working in institutions such as this. Dr. W. Roy Hewitt moved that Dr. Callender [ Callander ] be accepted as an Associate member in the Pima County Medical Society. Dr. Cogswell seconded this motion, which upon being put to vote, was unanimously carried. Instructions were issued that a letter be written to Dr. Callender [ Callander ], advising him of this action, and of the dues.
Applications for membership from doctors who are yet licensees of the State of Arizona were discussed. It was suggested that this matter by referred to the Board of Censors, with instructions that the applications on hand be presented at the next meeting for approval. It was the opinion of several members of the Executive Committee that the application blanks at present in use are obsolete; that there should be space for "credentials", and some sort of agreement that applicants have read the by-laws, and that they should signify willingness to serve at county hospital, etc. Instructions were issued that a new application form should be prepared.
Dr. Harry Thompson stated that it should be up to the Censors to verify the education and training of new applicants. It was also suggested that since they are automatically on two year probation, they might be accepted and later acted upon if not qualified. It was Dr. Thompson's opinion that there should be a dossier on each applicant, so that information could be received from hospitals, etc., and that the new blank should be commensurate with the hospital form.
A letter from Dr. J.M. Hesser, of Benson, Arizona, was read, in which he tendered his resignation from this society because of his inability to attend meetings held in Tucson. After discussion, instructions were given that a letter be written Dr. Hesser advising him that it is against the wishes of the Society to accept his resignation until his plans are more definite, since membership in the State Society is contingent upon membership in a County Society, and that action upon his letter is being held awaiting word from him as to the steps he will take.
