been a certain amount of relief from strained feeling since the resignation of Mr. Fox from the Medical Center. Dr. Steen offered the suggestion that one reason for lack of coordination is that St. Mary's is not included in consultations. Dr. Shoun asked for recommendations from the Board of Directors for further efforts in the attempt at coordination. Dr. Harry Thompson's idea was that 2 or 3 members of the Board of Directors get together with the County [ Hospital ] and the Board of Directors at St. Mary's, and say "Now, how can we get together?" Dr. Hewitt questioned whether the local setup is equipped for residencies or internships. Dr. Steen suggested that seminars be divided between the hospitals. Upon completion of discussion, Dr. Harry Thompson appointed Doctors E.M. Hayden, R.W. Hewitt, and H.D. Cogswell as a committee to meet with the Central Resident's Committee to work out ways and means by which closer coordination between the three hospitals may be effected.
Dr. Harry Thompson announced that he had appointed a Veterans Administration Hospital Committee, consisting of Doctors Samuel S. Altshuler, R.E. Hasting, W. Paul Holbrook, W.B. Steen, and Harry E. Thompson. The Veterans Administration is reorganizing, and has asked medical societies to help them set up training programs. This committee is an investigating one.
Dr. Steen announced that the President's Reorganization Plan #1 had been defeated, with no help from our own Senators-Senator Hayden having voted for it and Senator McFarland not having voted at all. Regarding H.R. 6000, reported out of Committee, the doctors have been left out of the Social Security Plan.
It was announced that the women's auxiliary is sponsoring a talk on November 9th at the Temple of Music and Art, by Dr. Gampel, on the subject "Socialized Medicine as I saw it", this to be followed by a reception at the Pioneer Hotel. Dr. Hugh C. Thompson moved that the Society be responsible for the reception and Dr. Brown seconded the motion, which was carried. The charge for the reception is to be $50.00 per one hundred guests.
Dr. Steen discussed the matter of the action of the F.B.I. investigating Medical Societies (anti-trust investigations) probably in an effort to have them stop their efforts to oppose socialized medicine. Dr. Hugh Thompson made a motion that this matter be referred to the Publicity Committee with a recommendation that it obtain favorable press publicity, including editorials, if possible. Dr. Kohl seconded this motion, and it was carried.
The article in LOOK Magazine concerning the American Medical Association was discussed. This has been announced to the membership.
The Auditor's report to June 30th 1949 from January 1, 1949 was made available to the Board of Directors.
The matter of non-members of the Society who are practicing locally was tabled for the next meeting.
A letter from Mrs. James Davis concerning a program for handling old accounts was discussed, and it was agreed that this matter should be handled by individuals, not through the Society.
It was announced that a film on Allergy by Wyeth will be shown at St. Mary's Hospital in the near future.
