December 12, 1949.
Board of Directors Meeting.
The meeting was called to order by the President, Dr. Harry Thompson.
Members present were: Harry Thompson, M.D., W.R. Hewitt, M.D., Hugh Thompson, M.D., A.N. Shoun, M.D., William B. Steen, M.D., H.H. Brainard, M.D., Harold W. Kohl, M.D., H.D. Cogswell, M.D., Ed. J. Gotthelf, M.D.
Dr. George Hartman was present to report that he had had a number of complaints concerning charges for blood transfusions, using Red Cross blood, some of them up to $50.00. It was his opinion that such charges might be out of line, and he wondered if it would be possible for the County Medical Society to take some action. Dr. Hugh Thompson advised Dr. Hartman that the individuals who have complaints should write to the Pima County Medical Society, giving names and circumstances, and that then the matter could be referred to the Board of Censors.
Dr. Harry Thompson and the members of the Board of Directors agreed to dispense with the reading of the Minutes of previous meetings.
Dr. A.N. Shoun reported on the activities of the Central Residency Committee since the last meeting. Major activity has consisted of gathering material requested by Dr. Goodhart, and forwarding it to him. Dr. Goodhart will be in Tucson on December 26th, and is expected to remain until the 29th. He is giving a lecture at the Veterans Administration Hospital on December 28th at 5: P.M. on a subject relating to graduate medical education, and Dr. Shoun has requested the privilege, for the Central Residency Committee, of having this announced at the County Society meeting. Dr. Shoun also reported that it had been suggested and recommended that the pathologists at the hospitals act in the place of Chief Resident, that they have certain duties to perform and oversee, in connection with disciplinary action and supervision of residents. The University lectures are to begin on January 16th, and they, as well as Seminars, are to have rather enforced attendance; i.e., a certain percentage of attendance will be required.
Dr. Harry Thompson expressed it as his opinion that excellent work is being accomplished by the Central Residents Committee, and that it looks as if we may be able to set up a unified training program by July 1, 1950. He stated that he thought some of the differences which were previously apparent are not now so obvious.
Dr. Cogswell stated that he had talked with Dr. Howard Gray, and that he wondered if there could be enough independent operating for the surgical residents.
Dr. Harry Thompson replied that he felt that only by combination residency between the four hospitals could this be accomplished. It appears that the minimum requirement is 100 major surgical procedures in the final year of residency.
Dr. Harry Thompson stated that the Planned Parenthood Committee has met and settled its difficulties, and that it is working out all right since its reorganization.
