1/9/50 Board of Directors
school children and provides for periodic medical and dental treatment for all [ "all" underlined ] children, opposing this Bill because it permits treatment for all school children [ "because...children" underlined ]. Also, the Bills on Federal Aid to Medical Education because they are potentially dangerous to the continued academic freedom of the medical schools. Dr. Thompson suggested that individuals and the Society send letters to contact members of the committees in the House and Senate about these Bills. Dr. Thompson also asked whether the Medical Society wishes to hear any more about this matter, his feeling on the School Health Bill being that it should certainly be opposed. If the Federal Government provides treatment for all school children it makes it a very definite entering wedge for complete government control of medicine. He stated that he thought the Society could well refer this Bulletin to the Committee on Compulsory Health Insurance and have them study it and recommend whether we should send telegrams. It was agreed that this matter should be referred to the Committee in question.
Dr. R.W. Rudolph spoke about the Council of Social Agencies, which was formed a year or so ago as a Health Survey Group, and that he had been put on the steering committee as a representative of the Red Cross and of the Medical Society. This group fostered a health survey of the city and county. Fred Stofft and Ray Wilcox are co-chairmen, and have a large committee and the smaller steering committee and many subcommittees which are to investigate various health features in the county. All this has been going very slowly because of difficulty in getting people on the various committees. They wanted doctors on committees and have not been very successful yet, but Dr. Hugh Thompson has talked with them. The only committee which has really functioned to any extent is that which is investigating the visiting nurse problem. This committee has been very active and has come through with a very comprehensive report and recommended that the visiting nurse service be continued. It has recommended that the local Red Cross Chapter try to influence the National Red Cross to allow their service to continue through 1950 and in the meantime hope to have a private agency take it over and make it a part of the Community Chest. There are many other committees, some to investigate chronic illnesses, tuberculosis control, dust control, eating places, etc., which are just beginning to function. There is one about child health which will be comprehensive when completed.
Dr. Hugh Thompson invited any member of the Board of Directors who wished to do so to attend the dinner at the Old Pueblo Club on January 10th for Dr. Robert S. Flinn and Mr. Rollan Waterson.
The meeting was adjourned.
