Minutes of the Board of Directors meeting of December 8th, 1950, were read by the Secretary. It was moved by Dr. Lewis, seconded by Dr. Hugh Thompson that they be accepted as read. Motion carried.
With reference to the discussion of the Publicity Committee report on Mr. Matthews' [ Mathews' ] editorial of December 8th, 1950, as contained in the Minutes, Dr. Lewis again opened discussion on this subject by inquiring whether it might nor be easier to just send in a letter through a friend, answering the questions raised, rather than to insert a paid ad in the paper, as suggested, with a map showing gains and losses by states of physician personnel and possibly a like map of population increase. Dr. Hugh Thompson informed the Board that since this matter had been called by Dr. Donald Hill who requested that this matter be brought to the floor of the Society, and asked the wishes of the Board. Dr. Harry Thompson moved that the matter be submitted to the Society and that the Board of Directors be guided by the reaction of the members, this to be done in closed meeting. Motion seconded by Dr. Farness, and carried. Dr. Hugh Thompson remarked that this subject is of interest not only in answering Mr. Matthews [ Mathews ], but in showing that there is an adequate supply of doctors in Arizona, which will attract lay people in town. Mr. Williams of KVOA thought it should be published whether Mr. Matthews [ Mathews ] had ever published an editorial or not. That it is long enough after the editorial so it need not be construed as an answer to his editorial. Dr. Lewis felt that this would only cost money and nothing could be gained by it. Dr. Steen remarked that there are some communities in the State which should have doctors and do not.
Question of a meeting place was discussed, and it was decided that the Vice-President elect, Dr. Farness, who will be chairman of the program committee for 1951, is to try to determine the consensus of opinion at the regular meeting as to the most desirable place to meet.
Letter from the Arizona Medical Association in reply to a request for information regarding remuneration of examiners of reservists and draftees was read by the Secretary, to the effect that it was understood that if a doctor had to spend unusual time or would possibly be called upon to leave his city or area for a very limited period of time to accommodate the demand, he would be compensated for his expense. Also that "For obvious reasons we (The Arizona Medical Association) have hesitated to press for a definite commitment from the Military until such time as the medical profession may be called upon to render this special service."
A letter from Colonel R.F. Kirk, Wing Surgeon at Davis-Monthan Field, in reply to a letter from Dr. Hugh Thompson who had written him stating the consensus of opinion of the Board of Directors opposed the establishment of an obstetrical unit in the hospital at Davis-Monthan Field for the families of Service personnel, was read by the Secretary.
