Board of Directors Meeting
February 8, 1951.
Short Version
Meeting called to order by the President, Royal W. Rudolph.
A letter from the Soroptomists [ Soroptimist ] Club regarding dedication of the Iron Lung to the community was read. It was decided to write a letter of acknowledgement.
A letter from Mr. R.T. Gridley, Coordinator of Athletics of the Tucson Senior High School, thanking the Society for its cooperation in their athletic program during 1950, was read by the Secretary.
The decision of the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base to establish dependent medical care was discussed and it was decided to read the letters concerning this problem to the Society at its regular meeting.
A letter from Dr. Milloy, Secretary of the Arizona Medical Association, enclosing a copy of the Minutes of the organizational meeting of the Grievance Committee of that Association, was read. It was pointed out that the value of the Grievance Committee is in rapidly doing something about complaints; that by-and-large most complaints would go through the local Societies first. This letter is to be read to the Society at its regular meeting.
Legislation before the current session of the legislature was discussed. It was felt that House Bill 46, which calls for the creation of a Department of Public Health, Welfare and Correction and would place the Director of Public Health under the Commissioner of the Department of Public Health, has been proposed by the State Medical Society and probably stands a good chance of being defeated. A Bill for the inclusion of School Nurses in the Teachers Retirement Act is under consideration.
A letter from District #2 Arizona State Nurses Association was read, requesting our support in the passage of House Bill #53, a proposed revision in the act defining the practice of nursing in Arizona. It was moved that a letter be written to the Nurses organization advising that the Medical Society approves this Bill.
A letter from the Medical Advisory Board of the Tucson Medical Center was read calling attention to the problem of adequate supply of blood and planning the reservation of blood for elective surgical procedures was discussed. In order to reserve blood for an elective surgical case it would be necessary for the Hospital Laboratory to have in their possession notice from the Red Cross Blood Bank that donors had presented themselves at the request of that patient and so much blood had been donated at that patient's request. The Hospital Laboratory would then undertake to reserve blood in amounts corresponding to that donated. Dr. Hartman has been contacted and is perfectly willing to cooperate with such a plan. It was moved and seconded that this plan be submitted to the other hospitals for their approval and then forwarded to the Red cross.
A request from Mrs. Hanson of the Muscular Dystrophy Group was brought to the attention of the board of Directors. They wish to have names and the number of cases of muscular dystrophy in Tucson.
