Board of Directors Meeting, October 4, 1951 2
and answer Mr. Wise's communication. Motion seconded by Dr. Littlefield, and carried.
Dr. Hayden reported that there is one other case, against Dr. Lieberman, but that the data is not all in, and that so far just a verbal complaint has been made; that the son of the patient is going to assemble all the data and submit it.
Dr. Harry Thompson inquired if any complaint had been made about the Davis "cartoon". Dr. Hayden said that he could explain what had happened, that Dr. Claude Davis had called him to say that Dr. James Davis had bought Dr. Willard Strode's practice and that he wanted to know if it would be all right to write Dr. Strode's patients, informing them of that fact. Dr. Hayden stated that he had called Dr. Hastings and Dr. Kohl, and they also had felt it would be inadvisable to do this. Then Dr. Claude Davis asked about newspaper advertising. Dr. Hayden said that he had told Dr. Davis that a simple statement would be authorized, which is all that is necessary and is objectionable to no one. Dr. Lewis said that he thought it was justified. Dr. Littlefield said that when the doctors had returned from Service previously, the Pima County Medical Society had given an announcement, and asked why the Society did not now announce return from Service for its men. Dr. Littlefield then moved that, as an official announcement from the Pima County Medical Society, for the doctors who are in military service and are returning to practice, a card be placed in the papers for three days by the Society. Motion seconded by Dr. Lewis. Motion carried.
Dr. Harry Thompson stated that he thought it would be worthwhile for the Secretary to place the ethics on advertising before the Society and get the reaction. He asked if Dr. Littlefield would want to suggest that the Board of Directors recommend to the Society that this be done. He then moved that the Secretary outline the ethics of advertising to the Society and pass on our recommendation that the Society sponsor announcement of returning men to civilian life. Motion was seconded by Dr. Beaton and carried. Dr. Hayden said that the only objection he had to this motion is that it would reach only thirty to forty percent of membership. Dr. Hugh Thompson then said that if the Secretary would include the paragraph on advertising in the next letter to the members, it would clarify the whole thing.
Dr. Steen read a letter from Dr. Elizabeth Laidlaw, School Physician, requesting approval of the School Health program for the school year 1951-52, and enclosing financial report for the past school year. Dr. Steen remarked that if they have good leadership it will be all right, but that there are individuals who would like to have all the children taken care of; that attempts are being made to widen the base. Dr. Kent remarked that the Society has control to the extent that it can pull out entirely. Dr. Rudolph said that he thought it is pretty well controlled. Dr. Hastings asked if it was desired that the society recommend that the plan be approved for another year along the lines it is now functioning, and he so moved. Dr. Hugh Thompson seconded the motion, and it was carried.
Dr. Hayden moved that Doctors Henry Philip Limbacher, Seymour Irwin Shapiro and James Alva Sutton be approved for permanent membership. Dr. Manning seconded the motion and it was carried.
