Board of Directors meeting, December 7, 1951.
The Secretary read a letter from Dr. J.H. Patterson in reply to an inquiry made by the Society regarding H.S. Mikesell, stating that since he is not practicing medicine no charges can be made until such time when circumstances indicate and investigation. Dr. Steen remarked that Dr. Mikesell had sent a patient to Dr. Sprague after doing a urinalysis, telling her that she should see a doctor. Dr. Farness remarked that he had complained to him about the ragweed in Tucson.
A letter from Dr. Thomas H. Bate, Arizona Sate Chairman of the National Doctors Committee For Improved Federal Medical Services, was read by the Secretary. Dr. Bate asked that doctors be encouraged to write the White House during December, to try to see, write or telephone their Congressman, giving him their views on the Federal Medical System, and place resolutions before as many medical groups as possible. No action.
A letter from Dr. Milloy was read by the Secretary, in which the Society was asked to give consideration to the operation of a "blood car" sponsored by the Irwin Memorial Blood Bank of San Francisco, which would go through this county via the Southern Pacific Railroad.
Dr. Rudolph thought the plan ought to be approved but that it should be insisted upon that it be taken care of locally through the Red Cross Blood Bank, which the Pima County Medical Society sponsors. He said that they are collecting blood for Korea here, too.
Dr. Farness suggested that it be approved to the Red Cross and that they be allowed to handle it from there.
Dr. Rudolph stated that the Blood Mobile contacts all the outlying towns.
Dr. Farness moved that the Board of Directors approve it to the Red Cross and let them handle it form there.
Dr. Steen stated that he thought the question was one of either accepting or rejecting the proposal--that it has nothing to do with the Red Cross.
Dr. Rudolph said that our first obligation is to the Red Cross Blood Bank here.
Dr. Harry Thompson said that we do not know what the Red Cross feels about this and he thought they should be contacted.
Dr. Hastings stated that our primary obligation is to the Red Cross. He moved that the Board of Directors go on record as favoring this Irwin Memorial Blood Bank program, provided it meets with the approval of the local Red Cross Chapter for us to do so, and that we communicate to the Secretary of the State Society our approval or disapproval. Motion was seconded by Dr. Beaton and carried.
A letter from Mr. Robert Carpenter regarding a possible candidate for executive secretary was presented to the Board of Directors. No action.
A Bill drawn up by the Phoenix Association of Laboratory Technicians was presented, asking for suggestions and criticisms from the Society. The Secretary was directed to submit this to Doctors Fuller and Hirsch for their opinions.
It was suggested that it might be nice to have an official auto emblem for the Pima County Medical Society. Dr. Harry Thompson suggested that the Society be acquainted of this at the next meeting, that members who want them sign up for them and they then be ordered.
