It was moved by Dr. Lesemann, seconded by Dr. Bean, to dispense with the reading of the Minutes. Motion carried.
Dr. Harold Kohl present to talk about arrangements for the Southwestern Medical Association meeting in October. He said--"Gentlemen some of you may be aware, others not, of the fact that our former immediate President, Dr. Cogswell, instructed a member of this Society, not I, who attended the Albuquerque session last October of the Southwestern Medical Association, to invite the Southwestern Medical Association to hold its 1953 convention in Tucson. I was not present at the meeting when this was done, but I understand it was readily approved. Therefore, on the 28 to the 31 of October this year, the Southwestern Medical Association is planning to meet in Tucson. I reluctantly accepted my appointment to take charge of the arrangements for this meeting. The question arises as to how and what we are going to do to support this convention financially. As you know, you are all members without dues of Southwestern. West Texas, Arizona and New Mexico are all included. The last meeting was very nice from a scientific standpoint, and socially. They have five or six outstanding speakers, and they paid their transportation and expenses while in Albuquerque. They had an excellent dinner and a good orchestra for a dance at the country club."
Discussion:
Dr. Hill--Who paid for it there?
Dr. Kohl--The registration fee for all attending was $15.00. I remember the check I gave them for registration, two tickets to our dance and the football game, came to $35.00. There were from one hundred twenty-five to one hundred fifty doctors from out of Albuquerque there, and I will say that the county there turned out very well. I asked them how they got out such an attendance and supported it, and they told me they had agreed that every member of their society would register and pay the registration fee. Everybody up there paid their $15.00. I have appointed three or four committee chairman, Dr. Secrist on Football and tickets. There will be a game on the 31st between West Texas State and Arizona; Dr. Cogswell on arrangements; and Dr. Updegraf [ Updegraff ] on golf. What I would like to present to this group for their decision, and, if any recommendation follows, to the Society, in order to make this a success (if we are not going to try to make it successful I should be notified soon, so that we can advise them to have it someplace else) is that this group deliberate on the feasibility, practicability, etc., of asking our Society to vote themselves the registration fee at this convention in October. I will await the action of the Society before I do anything else. I have contacted Mr. Proctor [ Procter ] about the Pioneer Hotel and have asked the Chamber of Commerce to get out the circulars.
