action should be taken to try to stimulate interest among the doctors to help in getting more blood. The committee recommends,
1. Getting out a little news letter which will be mailed to doctors once a month for a while, giving the figures and facts,
2. Making an announcement at each monthly Medical Society meeting.
Dr. Harry Thompson moved these recommendations be approved. Motion seconded by Dr. Rudolph.
Discussion:
Dr. Hill--Is these a feeling among the doctors that there is a shortage of blood?
Dr. Rudolph--There have been times when operations have had to be deferred or postponed at the hospital for this reason. There was also criticism at the meeting of the large amount sent for defense purposes. Frank Drachman has arranged it so that our local needs will be filled before they ship off any stuff to Korea. The feeling was that we are appealing here for blood for Korea.
Dr. Lesemann--I think, at least two years ago, that the director, in a zealous effort to exceed the quota, sent off more blood than he should have, and we were short here.
Dr. Rudolph--We are given a quota to fill. I do not believe that it has been exceeded. The Red Cross will put on a campaign soon, too, and I think it will be straightened out shortly.
Dr. Beaton--Has the main objection been straightened out?
Dr. Rudolph--Dr. Fuller and Dr. Hirsch are still against giving free blood.
Dr. Hartman was non-committal.
Dr. Manning--Roy, is Fred Drachman happy now?
Dr. Rudolph--As far as I know.
Dr. Harry Thompson motion, upon being put to vote, was carried.
Letter received from Mr. Walter E. Lovejoy, President of the Arizona Trust Company, enclosing the real estate appraisal of the property offered in mortgage by Dr. J. Metzger, was read by the Secretary. The Appraisal Committee of the Real Estate Board of Tucson reports the value of "That portion of Lots 5, 8, and 9 in Block 6 of Goldschmidt's Addition of City of Tucson, Pima County, Arizona, having the following approximate dimensions: 90 feet on North Main and 125 feet on Franklin" as being $18,500.00, this appraisal dated February 10, 1953.
Dr. Rudolph stated that he does not believe it is worth what Dr. Metzger wants the Society to give him - $15,000.00. He said that as he remembered it, it was to have been 125 foot frontage on Main.
Dr. Manning remarked that he did not see how the Society could retire a $15,000.00 mortgage when it is running from two to three thousand dollars in the hole each year.
Dr. Rudolph said that he had talked with Dr. Metzger once since the appraisal, but that to him it does not look like a good deal; that Dr. Metzger wants the Society to assume the mortgage right away and he is to receive the income from the apartments [ apartment ? ] until his death.
It was moved by Dr. Kent that this matter be tabled until a committee report be received. Motion seconded by Dr. Lesemann, and carried.
Dr. Lindsay E. Beaton, Representative to the Pima County Association for Mental Health, made the following report: "We have a letter, sent to Dr. Manning from the Pima County Association for Mental Health, stating that this Association has worked out a plan for obtaining psychiatric treatment facilities for children in Tucson, and that Dr. Douglas Kelley approved this plan, and that it was approved by the Board of Directors of the Mental Health Association and by several physicians. Before proceeding further they want the approval of the Pima County Medical Association. After reading this through, I thought
