Board of Directors Meeting, March 5, 1953 4
Board of Censors, that the chairman of the Public Relations report on what he has found out so we will have something to work on when we meet.
Dr. Manning--It was at the direction of this group that Dr. Kent investigated this matter.
It was moved by Dr. Beaton that the chairman of the Public Relations Committee report to the Board of Censors on this matter for their investigation, and a report be given the Board of Directors at a later date. Motion seconded by Dr. Hayden and carried.
Dr. Steen--I think when a man is torn to pieces before the Board of Directors we ought to hear both sides.
Dr. Manning--This all stems from the fact that Dr. Kent was directed to talk with Mrs. Angel, which he did.
Dr. Kent--Along this same line, I have been hearing that Dr. Busse is putting out stories about Dr. Sanger, that he has gotten quite vicious. You will hear about this latter.
Dr. Kent then reported on the activities of his committee relative to a revised call system--"Everyone has received a letter, in reply to which we have to date received sixty-seven volunteers who have professed willingness to serve. The only way we can work it, after all replies are it, is to set up definite days for everybody. Minnie told me how it went before, and the only way it will really work and the way it will be done is the have a definite system and everybody responsible. This is the only way it can be done safely and sanely. We feel that it is not up to Miss Benson to judge whether or not the patient needs a doctor."
Discussion:
Dr. Kuhlman--If this is going to be a Society affair, why do it on a volunteer basis? Why not all take part?
Dr. Bernstein--You cad break it down to departments. Supposing I am the only individual who volunteers in my department--I would no be able to handle it every night.
Dr. Kent--This was a feeler, but it is going to be mandatory. Certainly some of the older men will have to be excused. We are very definitely going to have to set up a call system, and will get it lined up before next month.
Dr. Beaton--I have something to bring up in this regard--Dr. Murphy at Veterans Hospital had manifested his willingness to take night calls on adults and children at the south end of town. He did not wish to do it if there is any feeling about it at all; as a matter of fact, there is a directive out that they do no private practice except in emergency. He will have his license in a month, and is a very conscientious doctor.
Dr. Lesemann--We would be setting a precedent there.
Dr. Beaton--I agree that it is not a good precedent, and puts us in apposition of not doing a good job in our own department.
Dr. Steen--The osteopaths are doing our work for us in the outlying parts of town.
Dr. Beaton--Dr. Murphy made one point, which would mean there would be no possibility of a man losing a patient--he would be willing to report to the doctor who has the case. I am not sponsoring this--I was merely asked to mention it.
Dr. Bernstein--Mention this at the meeting Tuesday night' you may get more volunteers.
Dr. Kent--A doctor has to be responsible for the call. It is not up to Minnie Benson to decide whether an individual needs a doctor.
Dr. Kent presented a pamphlet called "The Story of Anaesthesia" which Dr. Rupp submitted for approval of the Public Relations Committee. This pamphlet would be distributed preoperatively to all his and Dr. Wright's patients.
