Board of Directors Meeting, March 5, 1953 5
Dr. Manning stated that he has been asked by the Auxiliary to have a member of the Medical Society appear before them to outline what they should do for the next year; that he had not been able to find out that such a plan had ever been worked out. He said that he talked with Mrs. June Brainard, who is to appoint a couple of girls and Dr. Leo Kent, who can get a couple of men, this group to sit down and talk about this matter. It seems in the past that anytime anyone got an idea he just went to the Auxiliary with it, and the result is that they have about twenty or thirty projects with not close tie-up or organization. Dr. Manning felt that if is high time the Auxiliary had someone to work with them. Dr. Manning appointed Dr. L.E. Beaton and Dr. D.W. Neubauer to work with Dr. Kent on this matter.
Dr. Manning went on to say that in the past there may have been friction on one or both accounts, and this program is meant to eliminate confusion. He asked that suggestions been given to Dr. Beaton, and mentioned that the Auxiliary's program is drawn up through May.
Copy for Arizona Medicine is to be handled through the Public Relations chairman, and it was suggested that following each meeting information as to the speaker and new members be sent along.
The Secretary advised that he had been requested by Dr. Farness to write the U.S. Attorney General in reference to Dr. McPheeters, who is employed at the County Hospital; that he thought this suggestion a little out of his field, but after talking with Dr. Manning they both felt it would be the function of the County Hospital to write, unless the Society were going to be presented with the facts.
Dr. Bean stated that Dr. McPheeters is with the County Hospital this year as a parolee from California, and has been with them almost a year; that his original inditement was for an abortion charge; that through Dr. Farness and Matt Baird in Washington they had been asked if they could make a place for him in Arizona. Dr. Bean added that at the time they took him on, his first day here, Dr. McPheeters had told him that in the course of the year an additional charge on income tax evasion might arise, and he wanted him to know about it. Dr. Bean said that this has arisen, and Dr. McPheeters and his attorney asked him to write a letter, and also asked Dr. Farness to write in his behalf. Dr. Bean said that it was Dr. Farness' idea that the Medical Society might also write also, but that he does not know that it is necessary, since most of the members do not know Dr. McPheeters.
Dr. Manning said that it was his feeling that it would be kind of irregular to have the Society as a group support this man when nothing is known about the matter.
Dr. Bean agreed that he did not think it a Medical Society problem.
Dr. Harry Thompson moved that no action be taken. Motion seconded by Dr. Beaton and carried.
Letter from Dr. L. Lindberg relative to Dr. Paul Hawley's Newspaper Article was read by the Secretary, in which Dr. Lindberg indicated that he felt something should be done about this.
Dr. Steen remarked that he had just attended a meeting in the East, and met there quite a few men who were very upset about this article.
Dr. Costin said that the trouble is that when it got to the newspapers it was pretty summarized.
Dr. Beaton said that he could see Dr. Lindberg's objection, yet this came out under the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Steen said that it is now too late to do anything about this, that what is needed is a new director.
No action taken.
