Regular Meeting
March 10, 1953
The meeting was called to order at 8:10 P.M., by the President, W.R. Manning, M.D.
It was moved by Dr. Derickson, seconded by Dr. Mandel, to dispense with reading of the Minutes of the Regular Meeting of February 10, 1953. Motion carried.
Minutes of the Board of Directors Meeting of March 5, 1953 were read by the Secretary. There being no questions or objection, they were approved as read.
The President asked Dr. Harold Kohl, Chairman for the Southwestern Medical Association Meeting, to address the members relative to this meeting.
DR. HAROLD KOHL--Mr. President and fellow members, during the days of 28-31 of October this year we are scheduled to play host to the Southwestern Medical Association. This comprises West Texas, New Mexico and all of Arizona, and all are members without payment of dues. A meeting is held annually, and this past year in Albuquerque Dr. N.K. Thomas was instructed by the Past President of this Society to invite the Southwestern Medical Association to Tucson for the 1953 meeting. The invitation was readily accepted. The big question, of course, with any annual meeting, is how is it going to be financed? The Southwestern Medical Association does not have any treasury. In Albuquerque last year a plan was used by their County Society whereby each member was assessed $15.00 to underwrite the meeting. Those of you who have attended a Southwestern meeting know that it is one of the best clinical meetings of the year. We already have four outstanding speakers promised. Last year registration was $15.00. There was an excellent dinner dance at the country club, which was optional, and Arizona played New Mexico in the afternoon of the last day. I remember the check I had to write to register and to pay Mrs. Kohl's and my way to the dinner dance and football game amounted to $35.00. The assessment was $15.00 and the rest optional. This paid for speakers and hotel space, an they also had some exhibitors. This matter was brought up last Thursday at the Board of Directors meeting and I requested permission to bring before this group the question of supporting the registration this year by mandatory registration of our members, all extra monies to revert to the treasury of the Pima County Medical Society. This meeting takes in all groups, and we are trying to get a broad coverage so that general practitioners as well as specialists will be interested. We have hopes of having a general surgeon, a pediatrician, and a cardiologist who has agreed to discuss cardiology in relation to all other branches of general practice. There are to be no sectional meetings of specialties at all.
It was moved by Dr. Beaton that the members of the Pima County Medical Society assess themselves as a group by means of registering one hundred percent behind the Southwestern Medical Association meeting at $15.00 per member. Motion seconded by Dr. Kent and carried.
Dr. Philip G. Derickson and Dr. E.R. Updegraff were appointed by the President to act as Tellers for the balloting on membership.
Proposed were: Dr. Jacob A. Kohn for Permanent Membership; Dr. James McIlroy Fritz, Dr. Delbert William Hess and Dr. Ursus Victor Portmann for Term Membership. Dr. Manning announced that the physicians here proposed for membership and voted upon were all elected to membership with the proper majority of votes.
Dr. Manning announced that the By-Laws Committee has met and given much thought to changes for the benefit of the Society. Since Section 1 of Chapter IX requires that amendments to the By-Laws be read at a regular meeting prior to vote being taken, the President asked Dr. Harry Thompson, with Dr. Edward Hayden's permission, to read the proposed amendments, which Dr. Thompson did read.
