A letter was read from the Arizona Medical Association stating that the Professional Board, at its meeting on October 19th, 1952, recommended that the affiliation of this Association with the American Cancer Society be that of an educational program, both public and professional, rather than the establishment of detection centers, with special focus on the Maricopa County Clinic, so that the Cancer Society gives support to the indigents through endorsement of the County Hospital as a detection center.
Mrs. Donald Schell, who is the district chairman for the American Cancer Society, asked for an announcement of the Cancer Seminar which is to be held in Phoenix at the Paradise Inn, January 15th to 17th, 1953, and which will have two members, Dr. R.W. Rudolph, and Dr. A.J. Present, on its program.
Miss Benson, of the Doctor's Directory, reported two problems. One is getting a Pediatrician to go out on night calls to new patients. She said that the men will take care of their known patients, but are unwilling to take calls on new patients. The second is that she has trouble getting anyone to go to the south side of town on calls.
Dr. Manning stated that he felt this to be the Society's responsibility, as an ad is run in the telephone directory by the Society offering its assistance in finding a physician for those who cannot locate one.
Dr. Kent suggested that perhaps if a system could be worked out so that doctors knew they would be on call one night out of every two or three weeks, and Miss Benson could depend on this, it might help to prevent suits and other difficulties.
Dr. Lesemann moved that the Public Relations Committee formulate a plan for recommendation to the Society to handle emergency calls. Motion seconded by Dr. Hill. The Public Relations Committee is to contact the Pediatric Society also, and report to the Medical Society. Motion carried.
Dr. Hayden reported that the morning edition of the Arizona Daily Star on 12-5-52 carried an article about local Osteopathic Hospital which was a prelude to a campaign fund drive which they will put on during the middle of January. This has been called to the attention of the Arizona Medical Association, who referred it to the attorney, Mr. Jacobson. Dr. Hayden felt that the paragraph which reads "...and the hospital will deviate from its present status in that it will, when established, staff all qualified physicians as well as osteopathic surgeons.", might lead people to think that they are contributing to hospital beds which would be cared for by doctors of medicine.
It was suggested by Dr. Kent that the papers be advised that M.D.'s do not practice there.
Dr. Manning felt that advice of Mr. Jacobson should be waited for.
The President directed that the Secretary shall write Mr. Carpenter to draw this to Mr. Jacobson's attention so that this Society may have some information before this drive takes place.
A letter from the Arizona Medical Association conveying recommendations made to the Council by the Professional Board centering on policy of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, was read.
A letter from the U.S. Treasury Department was read, stating that the Pima County Medical Society may have a list of narcotic registrants in Pima County, but that the office does not have sufficient help to furnish such a list. This list was inquired for because the office has frequent calls for pharmacists to check registration numbers. Dr. Engle thought the secretary should be authorized to give the druggists this information, if she has it. Dr. Beaton thought that if the pharmacists want this sort of information it is up to them to obtain it.
