SHORTENED VERSION
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
May 11, 1953.
The meeting was called to order by the President, W.R. Manning, M.D., a quorum being present.
Motion was made by Dr. Beaton to dispense with reading of the Minutes. Motion was seconded by Dr. Kent and carried.
Report of the Cancer Committee, submitted by Dr. Louis Hirsch, Chairman, was read. Conclusions of this report were:
"1. The Committee subscribes to the slogan, "Every doctor's office a Cancer Detection center." Its opinion is that there is not valid reason for altering the present relationship between the doctor and his patient. The members of the Pima County Medical Society have previously pledged themselves not to deny a patient medical care because of inability to pay. This applies to examinations for cancer as well as other conditions.
2. The Committee feels that the problem of auxiliary services (hospitalization, medication, etc.) is one for the American Cancer Society to deal with as it seems fit. The Pima County Medical Society will be happy to cooperate with the American Cancer Society.
3. The Committee recommends that a letter embodying these conclusions and the supporting discussion be sent to each member of the Pima County Medical Society."
It was suggested that this report be amended, and that this amendment be included in the conclusions as No. 3, the present No. 3 being changed to No. 4, to the effect that "There already exists at Pima County General Hospital an actively functioning Tumor Board which is used for the purpose of Cancer Detection, open to all patients."
Dr. Dennis Bernstein moved that the report of the Cancer Committee be approved as amended, and a copy be sent to members of the Pima County Medical Society. Motion seconded by Dr. Bean.
Dr. Lesemann moved an amendment to Dr. Bernstein's motion that a suitable letter be sent to the American Cancer Society. Amendment accepted by Dr. Bernstein. Motion, upon being put to vote, was carried.
Letter being presented requesting Associate Membership for Dr. W. Claude Davis by reason of disability, it was moved by Dr. Kent that he be recommended for such Associate membership. Motion was seconded by Dr. Beaton and carried.
Letter from the Arizona Pharmaceutical Association was read, stating that at its recent convention a resolution was passed thanking the members of this Society for the courtesies and cooperation extended them during the past year.
Motion was made by Dr. Beaton that members delinquent in payment of their dues be automatically suspended, as provided by the By-Laws, that they be so notified, and that the hospitals be notified for such suspension. Motion seconded by Dr. Bernstein and carried.
