BOARD OF DIRECTORS
May 11, 1953
The meeting was called to Order at 8: P.M. by the President, W.R. Manning.
Members present were: Edward M. Hayden Clarence H. Kuhlman
Harry E. Thompson Francis J. Bean
Lindsay E. Beaton David E. Engle
Leo J. Kent George Fraser
Dennis Bernstein Frederick J. Lesemann
It was moved by Dr. Lindsay E. Beaton, seconded by Dr. Leo J. Kent, to dispense with reading of the Minutes. Motion carried.
Report of the Cancer Committee, submitted by Dr. Louis Hirsch, Chairman, was read by Dr. Manning, in the absence of the Secretary.
Discussion:
Dr. Harry Thompson remarked that no mention of the present Tumor Board at Pima County Hospital is made and he thought if ought to be included, that it should be added as No. 3 of the Conclusions in this report that "There already exists at Pima County General Hospital an actively functioning Tumor Board which is used for the purpose of Cancer Detection, open to all patients." Present number 3 is to be dropped back and called Conclusion number 4.
It was moved by Dr. Bernstein that the report of the Cancer Committee be approved as amended thus, and sent out to the members of the Society.
Motion seconded by Dr. Francis J. Bean.
Dr. Lesemann questioned the advisability of leaving in this report a part of the discussion which stated that it had taken $13,000.00 to uncover one case of Cancer.
Dr. Beaton also felt that statement had no place in the report, but Dr. Harry Thompson thought it served to show that the idea of detection centers is prohibitive.
Dr. Manning pointed out that this report is made by the Cancer Committee to show that the problem was discussed and what conclusions were drawn as a result of the discussion; also that it is the recommendation of the Cancer Committee that it goes to the members of the Pima County Medical Society.
Dr. Lesemann thought it ought also to go to the Cancer Society, and moved to amend Dr. Bernstein's motion to the effect "that a suitable letter be sent to the Cancer Society."
Amendment accepted by Dr. Bernstein.
Dr. Manning, as President of the Society, is to write such a letter.
Motion, upon being put to the question, was carried.
Letter from the Arizona Medical Association relative to 2% sales tax on medical services and the activity of the Arizona Supreme Court in prohibiting the Tax Commission from attempting this tax levy until the case has been tried on the merits directly before the Supreme Court was read. All Society members have received a copy of this letter, and no action was necessary.
Letter of Dr. James W. Davis requesting an Associate membership for Dr. W. Claude Davis because of disability was presented. It was moved by Dr. Leo J. Kent that Dr. Davis be recommended for Associate membership. Motion seconded by Dr. Beaton and carried.
Letter from the Arizona Pharmaceutical Association was read, stating that at its recent convention a resolution was passed thanking the members of this Society for the courtesies and cooperation extended them during the past year.
